How to use the
'find an instructor'

Many AMI full members are qualified and experienced to be Technical Experts in mountaineering, rock climbing and other related activities as defined by the Adventure Activity Licensing Regulations. Organisations running climbing walls, high ropes courses or other climbing-related activities also employ advisors to ensure that the best possible standards of practice are being met.

This Register is primarily for those in the outdoor/adventurous activity sector who are seeking advice relating to mountaineering, hill walking, abseiling, indoor and outdoor climbing, outdoor pursuits and related activities. The persons on the list are AMI members and therefore hold the MCI or WMCI qualification. In addition, they have undertaken further training in the work of a Technical Expert, have submitted up-to-date CPD records and listed a significant amount of experience in the activity areas that they can advise on.

The people on the Register have a wide range of experience and expertise. Consequently, the information given below can only act as an approximate guide in choosing them as a source of expertise. If you feel a person on the Register has the relevant expertise you will need to contact them to ascertain whether they have precisely the expertise you require. AMI cannot endorse any persons on the list and it is important to note that any contract of work is between yourselves as the employer and the person that you engage.

When contracting AMI Members as Technical Experts you can expect to pay upwards of £300 per day plus expenses. This should be agreed as part of the contract before any work commences.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

I came to working in the outdoors quite late compared to some, as I started as a seasonal instructor at Newlands Centre near Keswick at the age of 29. That was back in 1995 and after 2 seasons I became a full time instructor just down the road at Derwent Hill LEA centre, where I worked for 10 years. I then tried a career change and became a police officer - something that I soon realised wasn’t for me and I left after 12 months to set up my own outdoor business. The year in the police was invaluable in terms of giving me the insight into documentation and record keeping, risk analysis and mitigation and interpersonal relationships amongst other things. Since setting up my business in 2007 I have continued to provide outdoor activities and training to many groups and individuals and have built strong relationships with several providers and act as their technical advisor, predominantly in rock climbing and hill/mountain based activities, combined rock and water activities such as ghyll scrambling / gorge walking and canoeing. The list of organisations I work with as Technical Expert range from small, independent providers to large UK based providers offering activities abroad, some of who’s turnover is many millions of pounds.

I have been an Instructor for 40 years. That just means I've been doing it for a long while. I am also a current climber and work on my own Project aspirations. It is a significant aspect that being a TA/TE gives opportunity for Hard Skills aquisition and also Soft Skills practice and discussion for your teams. Site Specific Training and Assessments can be negotiated for your staff specifically for your individual Climbing Wall business requirements. I can also Inspect your PPE and create a tracking system for you for all of your climbing gear that you use. I advise on many subjects but always within the National Guidelines. In short I will help you through your processes and legal considerations. If in doubt....just ask please.
