ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Growing up on the West Coast of Wales gave me the freedom to take part in many outdoor activities. Attending a school that actively promoted the D of E Awards gave me the opportunity to learn so much more. Following A levels, I worked in different outdoor education environments and knew it was to be in that industry I would make my career in that industry. Being a trainee at Arete Outdoor Centre in Llanrug gave me my first real experience of climbing and mountaineering, and I became hooked! Following my SPA ML Paddle Sport Award and invaluable experience at Arete, I secured an activity instructor role at Ridgway Adventure in the North West Highlands of Scotland. This enabled me to develop climbing and mountaineering skills. Returning there for a second season in April 2019. September 2019 saw me leave the UK to take up a Glacier Guide role in Iceland. Working in the Skaftafell National Park was a fantastic opportunity to explore glaciers and ice caves. Having the awards makes me proud and has opened up a new world for me. I worked hard to get them, and I am prepared for the hard graft to achieve the next steps. My goals are to work towards my WML and MCI and become the best I can be.

I grew up in care and through social services in an environment where the outdoors was not something that I think any of us knew about. However, I always had a passion for being outdoors, and as soon as I could, I left the care system and joined the Army. Since spending some time in the forces and leaving in 2012, I have always had a real love for the mountains. After spending some time away working overseas, I took a job at Jaguar LandRover, which lasted 8 hours after realising very quickly that I did not want to be stuck in an office environment where the culture, passion and ethics just did not fit in with me. It was 2 days before I left that job that I had booked on to a Hill and Mountain skills course and I guess really for me where it all kicked off after doing the course at the end I asked John cousins who were moderating the course How do I do what you lads are doing From that point forward I have been on an amazing journey 3 days after the course i moved to central Scotland where worked at Cotswolds outdoors spending 3 days in the shop and 3 days out on the mountains gaining my QMDS 12 months later I sat and passed my ML assessment. During that consolidation, I started to climb and meet some amazing people who were just as up for some big days as I was. As soon as I had done my ML assessment, I booked the MCI training. The course provided me with some great feedback, made me look at being in the mountains differently and enhanced my psyche for being in the mountains. Since then, I have been lucky to climb, walk and run all over the country and the Alps. I hope that in 2021 I will be able to sit my assessment and pass the MCI award

My name is Louis I am originally from Clapham in London and now reside in Fort William Scotland working as a full time Mountaineering Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader. I have been obsessed with climbing in its various forms for just over a decade but since moving to Scotland have focussed almost solely on traditional climbing and mountaineering: although since qualifying I have a rediscovered love for outdoor bouldering and sport climbing! I started my vocation somewhat accidentally; partly because the act of continuously pursuing climbing is an incredibly fun physical and cerebral challenge but as a result of the incredible people found within the community. I was definitely a bit of a misfit through school and I found a refuge with the sanctuary of the climbing wall. Admittedly I was incredibly fortunate to have many people of influence in my life help me to channel this passion into what it is today; from my first steps trad climbing aged 13 on Stanage in the Peak to my time in the Vauxwall youth development squad to my first Scottish winter climbing adventures. There have been so many wonderfully supportive people along the way to enable those gateway experiences and mould my impression of what a passion for climbing can achieve. Its now a large part of why I enjoy my job so much - getting the opportunity to introduce new people to the sport! I do a small amount of work for myself trading under the name Kennedy Mountaineering. I offer guided climbing adventures and skills courses (further details on my website) but feel I specialise in guiding classic mountain and sea-cliff routes on my Scottish Rock Tours (guided climbing/ bouldering/ sport/ trad/ scrambling) and providing introductory skills courses for new outdoor climbers. The majority of my work is on a freelance basis working with a variety of clients. From schools and youth development programmes to guiding people on their holiday mountain adventures.

Specialising in Adventure Sports Coaching, I hold the MIC award and my BCU Level 5 Inland Kayak award. My main emphasis is on developing skilled performances from those I work with through individualised coaching. Contact me for more information.

Most of my life Ive been an engineer and product designer working to go climbing. Now I aim to pass on what Ive learned to the next generation helping people who have discovered climbing through bouldering walls get outside and fall in love with that too.

I first tried rock climbing when I was 11 years old. I had no idea that I would spend the rest of my life climbing. Things worked out well! Based in North Wales I spend most of my working time in the mountains climbing scrambling walking as well and kayaking and canoeing and working on national governing body awards. James Miller (more often called Jim) began his mountaineering as far back as he can remember. His parents always used to take him into the mountains and hills as a child where he would run off ahead and then wait for hours for them to catch up. His passion for the hills and mountains has therefore stemmed from the time he was able to appreciate being in them as a child and admiring the stunning landscape and views. He has climbed some very hard grades in the past but is more relaxed now and instead of wishing to constantly push his limits he seeks to providing training and assistance to others while climbing for the pure joy as opposed to any thrill. You are just as likely to see him cranking up an e4 as your would be seeing him climbing a VD with one of his friends introducing them to the sport for their first ever time. He holds many different Paddlesport biking mountain and snow sport qualifications making him a full all year round instructor and able to draw on knowledge from many different coaching angles. To Jim having the awards is about proving that he can do what he loves safely helping others achieve the same. He prefers that people judge him on his personal ability and manner once they get to know him as opposed to what a piece of paper says that he can do. As the piece of paper does not describe him but instead only that which he can do.His favourite climbing experiences would arguably be anything where he is touching the snow or the rock. But if he had to pick then possibly either moving together over three different e1 climbs totalling 1500m of ascent in a day or putting up a new 1800m climb in one day in Spain which he never put forward for a new ascent so as to limit any individuals doing the route if they are not able for it.

I am an avid climber mountain biker and skier with a devoted passion for teaching and coaching in both academic and outdoor fields. I transitioned from a full-time teaching career 4 years ago into the professional outdoor world after seeing first-hand the impact outdoor learning can have on students. The fundamental building block for all my professional practice either inside the classroom or on the hillside is the relationships I can foster with people from diverse backgrounds. Moreover I'm a fervent believer in expanding access to the outdoors for underrepresented communities through these relationships.I work out of Glasgow where I have easy access to both The Highlands and The Lakes which provide the majority of my freelance opportunities. I hold a range of awards in the outdoor profession which open up a broad spectrum of work which I thoroughly enjoy.

Hello! Im a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor based on the edge of the Peak District. As such my work is varied and massively rewarding! I spend a fair bit of time working on the local Grit and Limestone helping people become better and more independent climbers. For 20 years I have been leading walks and running navigation courses not taking for granted the inspiring landscapes I call my office. I value being able to finish a days work in the Peak District and return to my family but enjoy getting around the UK from my central base. If I had to pick what I enjoy doing the most each year it would be guiding steep ice throughout Norway in the winter and working on the Cuillin Ridge in the Spring and Summer. I work as a Mountain Training Course Director for the Hill and Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader Qualifications and have been involved in the training and support of climbing instructors for various organisations. As such I offer staff training and technical advice to various high ropes courses and climbing walls supporting better provision for a range of client groups. I have a wide angle lensed view of our industry and have worked in technical industrial fields as well as recreational. I am an IRATA L2 technician and bring together knowledge from a range of applications to run an Abseil Events company alongside my Mountaineering Instruction. Im often found on the top of buildings and man made structures meeting the vision of demanding clients. I have been a Committee member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors for a number of terms representing and supporting fellow Mountaineering Instructors in co-opted and elected roles. Im also a Cave Leader Paddlesport Coach and MTB leader. And I do enjoy a good road bike ride when I get a chance. But dont hold that against me...

I began climbing whilst at school in Bristol. I distinctly remember my first day in the Avon Gorge because the Council blew up Teatime Ledge! A year later Id bought a pair of EBs a harness & a rope & was already instructing younger pupils. The school took regular trips to Eryri so I was also introduced to the mountains early on. My third walk was across Crib Goch: I dont think Id ever been so frightened but somehow I kept calm & continued. Its hardly surprising therefore that I decided to study at Bangor University but I spent my summers instructing climbing & canoeing in the USA. Instructing led me into teaching & I was lucky because Avon LEA paid for me to do my NGB awards in climbing hill-walking & canoeing. Theyd be glad to know that their investment paid off as I continued to do this throughout 30 years of teaching whether it was preparing pupils for the infamous Ten Tors paddling the Avon & Wye abseiling down the Sea Walls or completing DoEA expeditions in Eryri & The Lake District. I pursued the MCI to take my son multi-pitch climbing safely & didnt foresee the doors it would subsequently open. When I looked for a way to escape teaching a new path presented itself as I was offered work training prospective MLs & RCIs. I really enjoy this work as I get to meet so many enthusiastic people who want to share their love of the mountains & after 40 years in the hills I have a wealth of experience to draw on to answer their questions. Being able to take folk to the more secluded areas of Eryri than they might be familiar with is also gratifying.Climbing & hill-walking teaching & instructing have been inextricably entwined in my life for over 40 years. They have taken me all over the world & made me many lifelong friends. I still bump into ex-pupils & their huge smiles tell me that my career choice was a good one for in many cases it has changed lives for the better forever. But then I knew that because its my story too.
