ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Work: The common thread in all the work that Im lucky enough to spend my time doing is the teaching of mountaineering skills to others and guiding people in all conditions all year round. I consider myself to be good at understanding what stage people are at in their exploration of the outdoors and am capable of working out effective ways to get them to where they want to be. I live in the Peak District where I run my company Adventure Expeditions which specialises in providing high quality private courses guiding Duke of Edinburgh Awards and outdoor activities. I also work training and assessing mountain leaders and climbing instructors and provide climbing courses and guided climbing walking and scrambling throughout the summer. In winter I spend my time running winter skills courses guided ice climbing navigation courses and generally enjoying being out in the Scottish mountains normally in the Cairngorms or Glen Coe areas. Play:What its all about! I got into the work through a love of the activities through making plenty of the good old fashioned mistakes and even inventing a few new ones... I love long distance walking running and all forms of climbing (apart from aid-climbing!). I strive to push myself to go that little bit further in all the strange activities we get up to in the mountains. Im always planning the next challenge - Next on the horizon is the Cassin Route on the Piz Badille in Switzerland but this will be the third time of heading out with this route in mind!... Third time lucky maybe? Then Winters on the horizon and Ive got my eye on Central Grooves in Stob Coire nan Lochan and White Magic in Sneachda amongst many other classics Im yet to do if psychological and climatic conditions are favourable! If you have a goal in mind and theres adventure involved I believe I have some good skills and plenty of enthusiasm to help you along the way. Andy

I currently work full time but in my spare time I love introducing people to the outdoors. I began climbing whilst at school in Bristol. I distinctly remember my first day in the Avon Gorge because the Council blew up Teatime Ledge! A year later Id bought a pair of EBs a harness & a rope & was already instructing younger pupils. The school took regular trips to Eryri so I was also introduced to the mountains early on. My third walk was across Crib Goch: I dont think Id ever been so frightened but somehow I kept calm & continued. Its hardly surprising therefore that I decided to study at Bangor University but I spent my summers instructing climbing & canoeing in the USA. Instructing led me into teaching & I was lucky because Avon LEA paid for me to do my NGB awards in climbing hill-walking & canoeing. Theyd be glad to know that their investment paid off as I continued to do this throughout 30 years of teaching whether it was preparing pupils for the infamous Ten Tors paddling the Avon & Wye abseiling down the Sea Walls or completing DoEA expeditions in Eryri & The Lake District. I pursued the MCI to take my son multi-pitch climbing safely & didnt foresee the doors it would subsequently open. When I looked for a way to escape teaching a new path presented itself as I was offered work training prospective MLs & RCIs. I really enjoy this work as I get to meet so many enthusiastic people who want to share their love of the mountains & after 40 years in the hills I have a wealth of experience to draw on to answer their questions. Being able to take folk to the more secluded areas of Eryri than they might be familiar with is also gratifying.Climbing & hill-walking teaching & instructing have been inextricably entwined in my life for over 40 years. They have taken me all over the world & made me many lifelong friends. I still bump into ex-pupils & their huge smiles tell me that my career choice was a good one for in many cases it has changed lives for the better forever. But then I knew that because its my story too.

Director of Outdoor Education at The Abbey School in Reading

My first experiences of the outdoors were whilst growing up - camping and canoeing trips with the family and days out exploring the hills around Northern Snowdonia. This extended to trips as a Scout and the completion of my Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school.During my final years of education I participated in a Student Expedition to Madagascar. My eyes were opened to the possibility of a career within outdoor education. Inspired by my Expedition Leader I dropped out of University and dedicated myself to this new goal completing my Mountain Leader Training in 2011 before embarking on a few seasons with PGL to get started within the industry. My first placement at an outdoor education centre was at Blue Peris Mountain Centre between 2013-2014. Afterwards I chose to pursue a career within freelance instructing. Over the course of the subsequent 3 years I had come full-circle instructing for a reliable breadth of outdoor education centres and leading my first of many expeditions two of which were for the same company I had gone to Madagascar with. In 2018 I completed the Instructor Scheme at Plas Y Brenin further enhancing my skill-set and opening up many more opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to work across the UK and overseas ever since; For an innumerable amount of fantastic outdoor education centres and independent providers and through guiding on over 20 student/adult expeditions venturing to some of the Worlds highest peaks. I am forever thankful for having the ability to combine my passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for travel in the work that I do.I remain self-employed working in a freelance capacity for many organisations and privately with my own fantastic clients (www.alexanderkay.co.uk). Nowadays the hardest job is striking a balance between work play and completing a few more qualifications as the years go on...

I have been a mountain leader since 1999 and have progressed through the qualifications since and now hold the MIA and WML and have completed my MIC training. My work has been in the Scottish Highlands for the last twelve years where I have operated mainly mountain based instruction. I have worked with either my own clients and those of others such as West Coast Mountain Gudies and have also freelanced at the national center Glenmore Lodge. Expedition work has taken me to Southern Africa East Africa (Killimanjaro) Indian Himalaya and The Peruvian Andes. My personal climbing and mountaineering has been in the European Alps in summer and winter Yosemitie Valley and Californias High Sierra. Skiing is also a great passion of mine with ski tours both in the UK and Alps. I work now with the website above passing on the skills which I have gained throughout my climbing and mountaineering life. <script charset=utf-8 src=http://widgets.twimg.com/j/2/widget.js></script><script>new TWTR.Widget({ version: 2 type: profile rpp: 3 interval: 30000 width: 230 height: 300 theme: { shell: { background: #333333 color: #ffffff } tweets: { background: #000000 color: #ffffff links: #4aed05 } } features: { scrollbar: false loop: false live: false behavior: all }}).render().setUser(DanGoodwinMSM).start();</script>

I also spend a lot of time on the hills, walking, scrambling and working on the Mountain Training schemes to support folks journey to becoming instructors.

At University I loved to study and I ended up with a BSc & PostGradCert - this took me to teaching for 14 years. I do love teaching but I was never fulfilled until I discovered that I could teach climbing and mountaineering as a career. My proudest achievements therefore were gaining my Summer (MIA/MCI) and Winter (MIC/WMCI) Climbing and Mountaineering Instructional Awards. I am now in my happy place when I am teaching or guiding people to climb or mountaineer safely for themselves. I have the dream job - theres nothing better than to share my passion and experience with other people to help them discover and build on theirs.

I run a small business called Offset Climbing and I enjoy taking on a variety of different work both for myself and others; I work throughout Wales but also sometimes further afield. I'm passionate about helping others on their path to climbing independently or developing their mountaineering skills and I love to share knowledge. In particular I really enjoy delivering self rescue and problem solving skills; I find that these skills can be invaluable on my local crags. Alongside climbing on the sea cliffs. I spend a lot of time in the sea coasteering and I have a lot of experience in this environment.

Ive been climbing since I was twelve years old. Its a passion and a way of life. Its also something I love to share whether thats with other experienced climbers or with people who are just starting out. Sharing the adventure is a huge part of it for me. I set up Rise & Summit as a mountain skills training and guiding company offering a wide range of courses with something to suit everyone from the complete novice to those looking to hone their technical mountaineering/climbing skills. We also offer TV & Film safety services from cast and crew safety to stunt doubles and rope rigging to get to awkward places and training whether this is in extreme mountainous environments cliffs or off the side of buildings. We offer technical advice to climbing centres whether this is staff training helping with risk assessments and operating procedures. As the author of the book Climbing Psychology I specialise in teaching people about the psychology of climbing and helping others with their headgame in climbing.

I started out climbing everything I could as a kid growing up in somerset we regularly went to great climbing venues to walk the dogs so I naturally explored the rock. Then as I got older I started going on an adventure camp in north Wales and started top roping on upper Tremadog. I did a learn to climb course through school and at that point started to think about being an instructor. Some years on and I trained and started work in a centre and hold various NGBs including SPA and ML(s). I used these tickets to help train our instructors throughout the year as well as when I got the opportunity to take groups off site. I was fortunate enough to be able to go on the Jonathan Conville scotland course in 2013 which awakened a love of winter climbing. After relocating to the isle of Skye and having a great trip to the alps in 2019 I decided to launch my business sharing amazing environments with others.

I am self employed as a freelance Instructor Guide and Coach. Along with the MIC I also hold the RYA Offshore Yachtmaster Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Award Advanced Sea Kayak Coach Award and both the White Water Kayak and Canoe Leadership awards. Based in Scotland I have worked on every continent

I am lucky enough to have had the chance to walk climb and mountaineer in some of the most beautiful places in the world since the mid-90’s. However it was only in 2023 that I took the plunge to change career - from university academic and Antarctic scientist to outdoor instructor. I relocated to Kendal in the Lake District and transferred my passion for teaching from a warm dry lecture theatre to the sunshine and showers of the Lakeland fells. Currently a summer mountain leader and rock climbing instructor working towards my MCI (mountaineering and climbing instructor) assessment in May 2024 I love the variety and challenge of the work. From old hands through to first timers in the hills I enjoy hearing about people’s journey to the outdoors and helping them discover and hone the skills they will need to keep them safe as they pursue their own adventures in the mountains.

I am a freelance mountain instructor working out of Balquhidder.

Senior Instructor at Glenmore Lodge Scotlands National Outdoor Training Centre

I have a great love of the Scottish outdoors and am enthusiastic about teaching and introducing others to climbing and walking in the highlands and islands of Scotland. I believe a day on the hills (as the saying goes...) is "about the journey, not the destination" and want to provide my clients with an experience of Scotland and the outdoors that will be enjoyable and inspirational.

I work as the climbing Development Officer for Active Stirling who are a sports trust that deliver sport activities on behalf of Stirling Council. I manage the Climbing wall at the Peak in Stirling and also work with Climbers schools and clubs to develop climbing mountaineering and the outdoors in the Stirlingshire area. I love what I am able to do and helping to develop people to enjoy the outdoors especially climbing which I absolutely love

Born and bred in the beautiful mountains of Slovakia, mountains and mountaineering are in my blood. What began as a hobby, very soon became a career. Apart from teaching adults and children, delivering indoor and outdoor climbing courses I now train and assess people to become instructors. I give Technical Advice to numerous small climbing walls and youth centres, routes set and look after the delivery of climbing sessions in 7 schools across London. For my own climbing, whether its ice climbing in Norway, scrambling in Wales, big wall climbing in Yosemite, mountaineering in the Alps, or pushing my grade in sports or traditional climbing I love it all! Climbing has given me many unforgettable experiences and pushed me to my limits and beyond, giving me a sense of achievement and allowing me to explore the beauty of nature as I go. As an instructor, I hope to help people enjoy themselves and come home feeling as inspired and passionate about the outdoor life and climbing as I do giving them the chance to have fun and be challenged in safe hands as they learn. As a trainer I hope to pass on my experience and inspire new instructors entering the industry.

Dave Sanderson holds Winter ML and MIA. He has worked extensively in outdoor centres and schools delivering adventure programmes outdoor instructor training personal development and technical advice. He loves mountains rivers and meat pies.

James Miller (more often called Jim) began his mountaineering as far back as he can remember. His parents always used to take him into the mountains and hills as a child where he would run off ahead and then wait for hours for them to catch up. His passion for the hills and mountains has therefore stemmed from the time he was able to appreciate being in them as a child and admiring the stunning landscape and views. He has climbed some very hard grades in the past but is more relaxed now and instead of wishing to constantly push his limits he seeks to providing training and assistance to others while climbing for the pure joy as opposed to any thrill. You are just as likely to see him cranking up an e4 as your would be seeing him climbing a VD with one of his friends introducing them to the sport for their first ever time. He holds many different Paddlesport biking mountain and snow sport qualifications making him a full all year round instructor and able to draw on knowledge from many different coaching angles. To Jim having the awards is about proving that he can do what he loves safely helping others achieve the same. He prefers that people judge him on his personal ability and manner once they get to know him as opposed to what a piece of paper says that he can do. As the piece of paper does not describe him but instead only that which he can do.His favourite climbing experiences would arguably be anything where he is touching the snow or the rock. But if he had to pick then possibly either moving together over three different e1 climbs totalling 1500m of ascent in a day or putting up a new 1800m climb in one day in Spain which he never put forward for a new ascent so as to limit any individuals doing the route if they are not able for it.
