ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

A lifelong outdoor enthusiast based in the Calder Valley on the edge of the South Pennines I combine formal qualifications with extensive mountain experience across some of the worlds most challenging terrain. With a BA (Hons) in Outdoor Leadership Im equally at home navigating hills with map and compass or leading others through technical mountain environments. Over the last few years Ive delivered specialist training across the Joint Services environment including Winter Mountaineering Proficiency courses for JSMTC at Ballachulish Wing and serving as guest instructor on the annual JSMTC Alpine Concentration. My international experience spans ski touring climbing and mountaineering in Bulgaria Norway Iceland France Poland Tibet Germany (where I lived and worked happily for several years) Africa Jordan Canada Austria Nepal Spain and the USA. Recent highlights include leading summer mountaineering in the Mourne Mountains rock climbing instruction in the Lake District and delivering a 10-day Level 2 Nordic skiing and touring programme at the Joint Service Mountaineering Centre in Skeikampen Norway. Whether delivering formal qualifications or sharing mountain craft, I bring decades of experience and genuine passion for helping others discover the transformative power of the outdoors. I also repair boots and climbing shoes; when the weather is marginal/poor, which happens a lot in the South Pennines, have a look and do pop in for a brew to look at a map or local climbing guide if youre passing.

I grew up in Stoke on Trent where I was always in and around the Western Peak District before moving to North Wales to train to be a teacher. I have been involved in outdoor learning for a number of years with climbing and mountaineering being a significant focus in my professional and personal life. I moved back closer to the Peak in 2021 and now work as a course manager in an FE college delivering Adventure Sports BTEC programmes. Rock climbing and mountaineering have taken me all around the world to some incredible places and this inspires me the most as a climber and an instructor. From a teaching point of view I love helping others and being a part of their learning journey to build skills and knowledge to empower them to have their own adventures in the mountains is always a pleasure. I'm particularly fond of gritstone climbing but dont profess to be any good at it! Running and walking in the Peak or North Wales is what I tend to get up to most but nothing beats big adventurous trad routes something I think we all need more of in our lives!! </p>

I was inspired at an early age by the Everest exploits of Bonington Scott Haston et al and this set me on the path to become a mountaineer. After various exploits during my time at University I was able to access more in the way of formal training whilst in the Army and this led first to trips to Scotland in the Winter then to the Alps and ultimately to an expedition to climb Archangel Ridge on Mount Foraker in Alaska. My final job in the Army was as the Manager of an Adventure Training Centre in the Bavarian Alps where over the course of three winters I discovered Ski Touring in addition to mountaineering and climbing. On leaving University I qualified as a teacher of Mathematics and Outdoor Activities at Bangor University in North Wales where I was also able to start working through the various Mountain Training schemes.I was fortunate in being able to find my dream job teaching primarily Mathematics but also Outdoor Pursuits at a boarding school in the Scottish Highlands a job I am still very actively enjoying. In recent years I have also started working as a freelance Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader during the school holidays and weekends and really enjoy this additional opportunity to pass on my love of Scottish mountains and crags. In March 2023 I also completed my Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor training course. This qualification has long been an ambition of mine but Covid put plans on hold for a while.

I live in Castle Douglas a small town in Kirkcudbrightshire in southern Scotland. My main business for many years has been the guiding agency ANDES which has been trading since January 1992 running expeditions in the highest mountains of South America. I also climb ski-mountaineer splitboard and instruct in Scotland. Usually up north in the Highlands during the winter most years for a week or two on Skye and often locally on the excellent granite sea cliffs in Galloway (to escape the midges!!) in the summer. Im available for guiding and instructing anywhere in theory but not really places with lots of midges.Since 1996 I have also written and published unique guidebooks to the Andes which have now been translated into French Spanish Czech and Polish. I have also made the first ascents of several Andean peaks including seven 6000m+ peaks and eight 5000m+ peaks plus about twenty new routes on 5000m+ peaks in the Andes.

Having gained my Mountain Leader Award in 2002 I have been actively working in the outdoors for many successive years. Whenever I feel skills fade starting to set in I move on to the next level of qualifications. I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of going through the qualifications then consolidating my skills both through working in Outdoor Education centers and leading overseas expeditions.

I am a lover of everything outdoors from trekking and climbing to mountaineering. I’ve climbed and trekked in all mountainous areas in the UK The Alps Borneo & The Himalayas. My home and base is The Peak District where I am a qualified Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor and Summer & Winter Mountain Leader for my business Peak Outdoor. I also provide climbing & guiding in North Wales The Lake District & Scotland. Whether it’s a day out guiding in the hills and mountainous areas of the UK or overseas expeditions I can support individuals or groups for my activities. I am a qualified Mountaineering Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader based in Snowdonia North Wales.I run courses covering all aspects of summer mountaineering & winter hillwalking as well as guided walking and climbing from the sea cliffs of Anglesey to the mountain crags of Snowdonia. Climbing courses & summer mountaineering courses are generally run in North Wales. Winter courses are generally run in North Wales and on the west coast of Scotland.Group sizes are generally kept small to give the best quality of instruction. All courses are bespoke and can be tailored to the requirements of participants.

A book changed my life. I was brought up in the Southeast of England and enjoyed being outdoors but had no experience of the mountain environment. While I was at law college in Surrey I read Chris Bonningtons book Everest the Hard Way and inspired by the story and photos booked a climbing course in Langdale and have been hooked ever since. A few years later I moved to the Lake District and have been here ever since. At the time I was working as a Solicitor but eventually came to the conclusion that it was not to be my long term career. I met friends who worked in outdoor pursuits which seemed a great way to combine my love of the mountains with a career.. My wife and I took a year out to travel in India Nepal and Thailand and before spending the French Alps. We decided I should have a career change and I set about gaining the Summer Mountain Leader Award which involved a wonderful year collecting quality mountain days..This helped me get a job at the YMCA Centre at Lakeside as Deputy Head of Mountaineering. Mountain Training were adding to the awards available and I was one of the first Rock Climbing Instructors (then the Single Pitch Supervisors Award). I went on to gain the Winter Mountain Leader Award and the Mountaineering Instructors Award (now Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor). The awards allowed me to run climbing and hillwalking courses train staff and monitor safety at the Centre. I became a provider for Mountain Training to deliver the training and assessment courses for the Rock Climbing Instructor award and worked on Summer Mountain Leader Courses.I developed an interest in teams and leadership and moved into work involving team and leadership development which is now my main focus. However I still deliver Mountain Training courses on my own account and spend as much time as I can in the hills and climbing. It is interesting the impact a book can have!

Hi my name is Connor Holdsworth I am the company founder of Atlas Mountaineering. I was born in Bradford although I have spent a great deal of my adult life in Scotland. Since a young age I have always been outdoors walking and climbing it only seemed natural after I graduated from university that I would do this full time. I love helping people experience what the UK has to offer whether it is trying climbing for the first time or taking a group to the summit of Ben Nevis. It is such a beautiful place to live and work and I would not trade what I do for the world. Outside of work I am a keen climber and love going on big adventures recently I have spent time in Morocco in the High Atlas mountains (hence the company name) and the Italian Dolomite climbing and trekking.

A well known MIC I live and work from the foot of Ben nevis running winter climbing courses and winter mountain leader courses throughout the winter. I am a sponsored winter climber and also offer backcountry and ski touring courses. I regularly give winter safety lectures and run avalanche courses for the Mcofs.

I am a full time instructor living in the mountains of North Wales with my wife Kate and our 4 children. I have climbed around the world and seen many beautiful places but love living and working in the mountains of Snowdonia.I took up rock climbing as a teenager and have been climbing ever since. I love adventurous climbing favourite rock climbs are routes like the Old Man of Hoy big multi pitch routes on Cloggy or Gogarth. Winter Climbing for me captures the adventure element that I love the short days sunsets cold crisp air and the uncertainty of catching the routes in condition all combine to give a magical experience. Trips to the Alps manage to combine the best of each warm sunny rock blue skies soaring snow aretes and steep ice - often all in one day! I have been lucky enough to climb classics like the Matterhorn Frendo Spur North Face of the Grande Jorasses Mont Blanc and many more. I visit the Alps for fun with friends a couple of times each year for ski mountaineering and climbing and have also climbed in the States Norway the Himalaya Africa and across Europe.

Chris started Rock Climbing & Mountaineering aged 12yrs old. At 15yrs old hed climbed Mont Blanc and 16yrs old travelled to the Himalayas. These early experiences cemented his journey to make a profession out of Mountaineering. At the age of 18 he achieved the RCI award (SPSA) and the Summer ML award at the age of 20. Quickly moving on to achieve the MCI (MIA) award in 2000 at the age of 22 and the IML (EML) in 2004.He founded Rock & Sun in 2002 and lived in Spain for nearly 20 years guiding and instructing all over Europe and Africa. He is now based in Bristol and operates NG Mountaineering with his wife Lisa.Chris provides specialist training & instruction to individuals and groups looking to develop & fine tune their skills especially in navigation rope skills self rescue & winter skills. He is also a member of the Avon & Somerset Search and Rescue Team.

Ive always enjoyed being in the outdoors walking and climbing was a way I could spend more time outside. Walking led to winter walking and mountaineering and rock climbing led to winter climbing and Alpinism. After taking my first flight to South Africa when I was 17 I also began to travel widely together with my interest in the outdoors travel ignited my interest in physical geography. I began to go on expeditions which led to me becoming an expedition leader as well as travelling to various mountain ranges around the world for high altitude mountaineering and ski touring. I continue to explore challenge myself in the mountains and on the crags and spend time experiencing different mountain cultures around the world.

Freelance mountaineering instructor and naturalist. Owner of Summit Sense. Alex is a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, Winter Mountain Leader and BSc Zoologist by training. He is passionate about connecting people with their natural environment working as a freelance MCI/WML wildlife tour leader and skills workshop provider. He is also a Mountain Training skills course tutor and course staff on ML training/assessment courses. He works on a freelance basis with other likeminded outdoor companies to provide qualified instruction and guiding services and also runs a range of his own in-house organised courses, workshops, guided experiences and events tailored towards walking, scrambling and climbing in the mountain environment as Summit Sense. Alex lives and works in Eryri/Snowdonia year-round and regularly works on the West Coast of Scotland and Skye.

Where to start...? I am mad passionate about the great outdoors. For me my main passions have only come as recent as the last few years. I now freelance as an outdoor instructor trying to inspire others into the outdoors. Before this I was serving in HM Royal Marines. It was always my dream and goal to get my green lid and become a Royal Marines Commando.I think my sense of adventure and travelling where really the underlying agendas to signing up and joining the corps. I had some great adventure training packages doing via ferratta white water rafting skiing and climbing. However i never pursued any of these sports and focused mainly on football. In 2008 after deploying to Afghanistan for the second time I was injured on patrol one day in December losing my left foot to an IED from that point my life took a slightly different direction. After this I found a huge love for the mountains. I try to go out walking as much as possible and have definitely have the bug for climbing. After leaving the marines i began working my through the Mountain Training Awards. I did my MLS training at the Brenin and absolutely loved it. The instructors were so informative and dead chilled out.I have done my CWA SPA and went on to do my MLS Assessment at PyB.If Im not working I will be found cragging walking biking or running.

It all started at The Storey Arms in 1988 when for some reason I thought that it would be a good thing to do. I was quite green behind the ears then but had a passion for the mountains. Shorthly after this I trained to become a teacher and that is when the ML scheme really became valuable. Upon passing my assessment in 94 I began using it straight away with DofE groups. MLs in schools were quite rare in the early 90s. Rock climbing and scrambling was the natural progression along with winter routes so I started to log days for SPA and MLW. Living in Kent this took quite a while but I eventually made it facilitated by a move to North Yorkshire. I used all of my MT qualifications on a regular basis as Head of Outdoor Pursuits at an Independent Boarding School for 10 years. Ive spent the last two pandemic seasons consolidating my mountaineering & scrambling skills for my MCI re-assessment and passed the one day re-assessment in July 2021:-).I have become more interested in ultra running over the last few years and combine my love for the mountains and navigation with endurance running both in the UK and in the Alps. I completed the UTMB in August 2018 and the Original Everest Marathon December 2019. Having recently finished a 25 year teaching career I am now entering the freelance outdoor instructor world from January 2020 onwards developing a small business called Mountain Mastery UK which will offers a range of climbing mountaineering courses plus mountain navigation/running courses and bespoke guided experiences.

I am a Climbing and Mountaineering Instructor (MCI) and climbing Development Coach based in Newcastle upon Tyne. I have 35 years of climbing experience: Trad climbing and bouldering across the UK; Sport Climbing throughout Europe and the Middle East; trekking and mountaineering in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. My real passion is teaching/coaching in the outdoors. I am an ex-teacher and will never lose the thrill of seeing people develop their skills and grow in confidence. I will always work hard to exceed your expectations. I deliver courses for Mountain Training - Climbing Wall Instructor; CWI Abseil Module; Hill Skills; Mountain Skills; Rock Skills. Each year, I work on summer Mountain Leader Training and Assessment courses.

Based in the Lake District but frequently working in Scotland and Wales. Im always trying to make the most of these wonderful places. Summer and Winter Walk guiding and skills tuition. MIA so ask about climbing or scrambling instruction.

Based in Sheffield I run a small business called Alienmountain providing coaching and instruction over a wide range of mountain activities. I am also part of the inspectorate on behalf of the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) for the North of England ( https://adventurerms.org.uk/team/john-allen/ )The higher awards have opened the way for me to share skills with others to help them to improve. I like teaching people to lead on trad grit and steep ice the most and teaching navigation the least.

Come and join me rock climbing scrambling navigating learning new winter skill climbing a winter climb trekking in the Alps of Europe or getting some personal climbing coaching. My passion is the outdoors and coaching instructing and teaching others in this environment in whatever aspect they want to develop. On top of the qualifications I have listed below I am also a Qualified Teacher having spent 8 years teaching Geography.I hold the Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) the International Mountain Leader Award (IML) and the Development Coach Award. This allows me to take you into technical terrain in the UK summer and winter be it mountaineering or climbing as well as walking and the IML allows me to lead trekking routes in Europe. In the process of getting this award I have completed my Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Award (ML) and my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award (MCI). This equates to 40 days training 32 days assessment and a minimum of around 350 days walking scrambling and climbing. I am also a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and am the Development Officer for this organisation. Most importantly however I truly love my job. Call it what you will but teaching instructing coaching or guiding in the outdoors is brilliant. Every day is different as the weather changes the routes vary and peoples abilities ages and expectations differ. Please feel free to get in contact with me so that we can discuss how I can help you fulfil your outdoor ambitions. In the unlikely event that I cannot be the one to help you I will certainly put you in touch with someone who can.

I have been extensively climbing and mountaineering since 2005 but was brought up in the hills and on the crags as my Dad was also an instructor. Since getting back into climbing and mountaineering I have travelled all over the world pursing my passion. I feel totally content and relaxed in the mountains and love trying to impart the joy of being in the outdoors on others. Since following the MIA pathway I have introduced lots of people to a new hobby be that trad climbing or hillwalking. I get most fulfilment from seeing people who I have instructed going out and sending me pictures of them on their journeys.
