ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

I have been enjoying working in the Outdoors for the last 10 years. My main work has been with The Outward Bound Trust alongside taking people to the tops of Munros of Scotland.I have successfully achieved my Mountaineering Climbing Instructor Award long time coming but one of the most fulfilling things I have done.

I began working in the outdoor industry in 2005 as a volunteer Instructor for Greenhill YMCA before going on to do a year as a trainee instructor in Tollymore National Outdoor Centre. After my time in Tollymore I went on to work as a freelance outdoor instructor working for a variety of providers throughout the UK and Ireland.During this time I worked my way through the mountain training awards eventually attaining the WMIC in 2014. This award allows me to work throughout the UK and Ireland in both summer and winter instructing all aspects of climbing and mountaineering. In 2014 I established Jonny Parr Climbing and now split my time between running summer climbing and mountaineering in Northern Ireland with occasional trips to Skye and winter climbing and mountaineering trips throughout the Scottish Highlands.

I love the outdoors and mountains. I enjoy nothing more than encouraging others to enjoy the freedom and sense of achievement that a good day out in the hills and the great outdoors brings. Every day brings a different experience as the weather changes and people's expectations and abilities differ. I’ve met some great characters and made some good friends along the way. I am a professional Mountain Instructor and hold the Mountaineering Instructors Award (MIA) and a member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors. I am also a qualified Winter Mountain Leader and aspirant MIC Technical Advisor and have been working in the Outdoor industry for the last 25 years. I have trained and assessed on both Mountain Leader awards (ML) and SPA awards and teaching, instructing, coaching and guiding in the outdoors is brilliant...

Having been involved with Mountain Training awards since I was 19 as a Trainee they have always been held in high regard in my mind for the instructor and leader to be involved with. They have industry value and respect and content developed from experience.Ive put the work in over the years into gaining the experience that would allow me to confirm my abilities against the Single Pitch Award the Mountain Leadership Awards of both summer and winter and the Mountaineering Instructor Award and Certificates. All of these awards have given me the opportunity to work with amazing people showing them the beauty and adventure of the British Outdoors.Im now lucky enough to be able to help train the next generation and provide some of these awards to others so that they may begin or continue their careers in the Adventure Industry.

Im now based in the Lake District and work part time as a Senior Instructor for Outward Bound as well as running my own Mountaineering Instruction business.I started my journey towards becoming an instructor in 2009 when I went on my SPA training in the Lakes. Born and bred in the beautiful mountains of Slovakia, mountains and mountaineering are in my blood. What began as a hobby, very soon became a career. Apart from teaching adults and children, delivering indoor and outdoor climbing courses I now train and assess people to become instructors. I give Technical Advice to numerous small climbing walls and youth centres, routes set and look after the delivery of climbing sessions in 7 schools across London. For my own climbing, whether its ice climbing in Norway, scrambling in Wales, big wall climbing in Yosemite, mountaineering in the Alps, or pushing my grade in sports or traditional climbing I love it all! Climbing has given me many unforgettable experiences and pushed me to my limits and beyond, giving me a sense of achievement and allowing me to explore the beauty of nature as I go. As an instructor, I hope to help people enjoy themselves and come home feeling as inspired and passionate about the outdoor life and climbing as I do giving them the chance to have fun and be challenged in safe hands as they learn. As a trainer I hope to pass on my experience and inspire new instructors entering the industry.

My name is Barry Thomas better know as Baz. I own and run Crag 2 Mountain with my wife Georgia based in South Devon on the Dartmoor National Park. Im a former Royal Marines Commando and have been mountaineering & climbing all over the world since 2002.I started to volunteer at my local climbing wall as a kids climbing instructor on a saturday mornings. I really enjoyed instructing and coaching so decided to take it further and I embarked on gaining National Qualifications along side my military adventure training qualifications. I am currently working towards my Winter Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor (WMCI) Award.

Ive always enjoyed being in the outdoors walking and climbing was a way I could spend more time outside. Walking led to winter walking and mountaineering and rock climbing led to winter climbing and Alpinism. After taking my first flight to South Africa when I was 17 I also began to travel widely together with my interest in the outdoors travel ignited my interest in physical geography. I began to go on expeditions which led to me becoming an expedition leader as well as travelling to various mountain ranges around the world for high altitude mountaineering and ski touring. I continue to explore challenge myself in the mountains and on the crags and spend time experiencing different mountain cultures around the world.

The school I went to was a big sporting school and had no outdoor education programme. As a result I spent most of my early years playing rugby and cricket. It wasnt until I started teaching that I thought about the outdoors and its potential in education. The Centre belonging to the LEA I worked for were offering some excellent subsidised training courses. When I enquired about the Mountain Leadership Course it was recommended to me to do a climbing course as it would help with my ropework skills. As a result I found myself on my first days climbing on a multi pitch route at Wintours Leap wearing big mountaineering boots. We did an alternative last pitch with a 5a finish and at the end I was totally exhausted but completely hooked. The other candidates and instructors on the course became lifelong friends and climbing companions and I spent every spare minute of the next 8 years climbing mountaineering and skiing. In march 1990 I was a very proud man sat in Martin Burrows-Smiths office at the Lodge when he told me I had passed my WMCI. Climbing completely changed my life and took me to places I never thought I would or could go. I also hope that it has changed the life of many young people and adults who directly or indirectly have been affected by my work as an Mountaineering Instructor

I am a mountaineering and climbing instructor based in the South west, day to day covering Cornwall and Devon but regularly travelling further afield. I work with a range of people introducing them to the delights of sea cliff climbing, helping them climb their dream routes and teaching to lead or develop their climbing on single or multi-pitch routes. I also spend a lot of time on the hills, walking, scrambling and working on the Mountain Training schemes to support folks journey to becoming instructors.

I have been climbing and mountaineering for 30 plus years in all of its forms - Trad Sport Bouldering Ice Mixed. Alpine Himalayan and general mountaineering in both Summer and Winter conditions. I am a Course Director for the Climbing Wall Instructor award (CWI) Climbing Wall Abseil Instructor award (CWAI) Rock Climbing Instructor award (RCI) Lowland Leader award (LoLA) and Expedition Skills Module (ESM). I am also a Course Tutor for both Hill & Mountain Skills courses and Rock Skills courses. I can provide refresher courses for all of the above and offer consultancy and technical advice for all related activities.

Come and join me rock climbing scrambling navigating learning new winter skill climbing a winter climb trekking in the Alps of Europe or getting some personal climbing coaching. My passion is the outdoors and coaching instructing and teaching others in this environment in whatever aspect they want to develop. On top of the qualifications I have listed below I am also a Qualified Teacher having spent 8 years teaching Geography.I hold the Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) the International Mountain Leader Award (IML) and the Development Coach Award. This allows me to take you into technical terrain in the UK summer and winter be it mountaineering or climbing as well as walking and the IML allows me to lead trekking routes in Europe. In the process of getting this award I have completed my Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Award (ML) and my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award (MCI). This equates to 40 days training 32 days assessment and a minimum of around 350 days walking scrambling and climbing. I am also a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and am the Development Officer for this organisation. Most importantly however I truly love my job. Call it what you will but teaching instructing coaching or guiding in the outdoors is brilliant. Every day is different as the weather changes the routes vary and peoples abilities ages and expectations differ. Please feel free to get in contact with me so that we can discuss how I can help you fulfil your outdoor ambitions. In the unlikely event that I cannot be the one to help you I will certainly put you in touch with someone who can.

I have been mountaineering and climbing since around 1983 when I was a member of a group of 6th form college friends who started climbing. We didnt know what we were doing ............. With some tuition from college staff we gained some knowledge. 17 years in the Royal Engineers enabled me to gain experience qualifications and work in the climbing and mountaineering field. I was able to take part in or organise climbing expeditions to a variety of overseas destinations as well as run a Nordic ski racing team and the Joint Services Mountain Training Centre in Ballachulish. On leaving the Services I worked in youth expeditioning for 10 years firstly with my own company then with Outlooks Expeditions latterly as their Technical Director. During this time I was again on overseas expeditions. I spent 4 1/2 years as the Highland Council / High Life Highland Outdoor Education Officer - which was an enlightening experience. Since 2018 I have worked as a freelance Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor with my own clients as well as Glenmore Lodge West Coast Mountain Guides Jagged Globe Dubh Mor and Scottish Rock and Water. I also lead overseas expeditions for Jagged Globe. I have met and worked with some amazing colleagues and clients and feel extremely privileged to still be doing so. In my spare time (as I try not to work full time!) I am a member of Stirling Triathlon Club represent Great Britain in my age group and am a level 2 Triathlon Coach.

I am passionate about introducing people to wild places. I believe nature is the finest teacher and once someone has discovered that they are capable of more than they might have thought there is no going back. I offer Outdoor Education delivery and consultation to schools and youth organisations and personal development adventures for individuals and businesses. Based in Cornwall but I operate across the UK and internationally. Full member of AMI, Mountain Training Tutor, Member of the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Im a keen climber and mountaineer. Ive been a qualified MCI since 2013 and I use the skills gained through this award on a daily basis in my work. The main reason I went down the MCI route was to give me variety in my work and also to be able to work with people as they progressed.

Introduced to the outdoors via a crash course in Cross country skiing and winter survival as part of my DofE Gold expedition it was inevitable that I would lean towards a more action filled personal life. I have broadened my personal experiences by climbing and walking as part of expeditions across much of Europes mountain ranges and further afield. These emboldening experiences include early yet formative winter expeditions to the Hardangervidda in Norway the Caucasus in South Russia. Wilderness trekking through the Sud Tirol and Dolomites. Summer Alpine ascents of major Swiss and French alps. Multiple free ascents of classic Yosemite and Tuolumne routes. Multiple bouldering excursions to Fountainblau not to mention innumerable trip/routes across the major UK mountain regions in both summer and winter.Since 2009. I have endeavored to pass my passion for the outdoors over to school children from around the Sheffield area. As a secondary school teacher I have looked to embed outdoor experiences into their development and happily see rapid development in all participants. Mountain walking and outdoor climbing nurture confidence social and environmental awareness team skills and personal reflection - whats not to agree with?Next step MIA and IML!

I have worked in the outdoors since 1985. I have had the privilege of instructing in numerous countries. I ran an outdoor company in Morocco for 20 years and then in France for 6 years. More recently I have been running an adventure therapy programme for displaced young people in the Kurdish Region of Iraq.I am now based in South Wales where I do freelance instructing and I continue to make regular journeys to Iraq and other countries to develop outdoor activities in these places.Having the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award has helped me to branch out into areas of work that more fully explore peoples potential. I love seeing people achieve far more than they thought possible and being an MCI gives me the professional background to discover and unlock hidden potential and talents.Developing the adventure therapy programme in Kurdistan has been a real challenge. I have drawn upon years of experience in different contexts - both in the outdoors and in the humanitarian sector. It is probably the most exciting thing I have been involved in.

Dave Sanderson holds Winter ML and MIA. He has worked extensively in outdoor centres and schools delivering adventure programmes outdoor instructor training personal development and technical advice. He loves mountains rivers and meat pies.

I got my first taste of the UK mountains as an Air Cadet in the Lakes aged 15. The staff were all Mountain Leaders and after that week thats what I wanted to be. At 18 I moved to South Wales to start an apprenticeship in an Outdoor Centre and from there I never looked back! After a move to North Wales to study for a BSc in Geography I passed my ML in 2005 but by then Id also had a good taste of Scottish winter and the Alps and suddenly it was about climbing and mountaineering too. Along the way since then I have been lucky enough to work all over the UK and worldwide. In 2015 for example I climbed classic ice routes on the Ben rock routes on North faces in the Alps skied 4000m peaks summited Kilimanjaro whilst working and did some guiding in Nepal. This is very typical of my life and 2023 was finally back to that same sort of normality. Nowadays as a qualified WMCI and IML I work with lots of young people and teach mountain skills to adults; navigation climbing and mountaineering. I am still learning myself everyday and I look forward to the challenge the change in the seasons bring.I love working with people and seeing them develop. Its a journey for us all but thats how I like it.

www.jfclimbing.co.ukIm a current and up to date MCI.I am experienced in instructor training having worked for several years as a senior instructor at a large outdoor centre.I climb regularly in summer winter and alpine conditions and have climbed all over the UK and abroad.

I live in Castle Douglas a small town in Kirkcudbrightshire in southern Scotland. My main business for many years has been the guiding agency ANDES which has been trading since January 1992 running expeditions in the highest mountains of South America. I also climb ski-mountaineer splitboard and instruct in Scotland. Usually up north in the Highlands during the winter most years for a week or two on Skye and often locally on the excellent granite sea cliffs in Galloway (to escape the midges!!) in the summer. Im available for guiding and instructing anywhere in theory but not really places with lots of midges.Since 1996 I have also written and published unique guidebooks to the Andes which have now been translated into French Spanish Czech and Polish. I have also made the first ascents of several Andean peaks including seven 6000m+ peaks and eight 5000m+ peaks plus about twenty new routes on 5000m+ peaks in the Andes.

I was about 11 the first time I went climbing. That was on Idwal Slabs in North Wales. Coming from the West Midlands there werent many opportunities to go climbing outside and so I stored up in my mind that I would take the next opportunity that came my way. That arrived in the form of Leeds University climbing club. From then on my life changed. Since then Ive enjoyed every aspect of the sport including trad climbing sport climbing bouldering and competing for team GB. Its taken me all round the world and stand out places to climb for me are Arapiles in Australia the Needles in California USA and sport climbing in the south of France. When I figured out that there was a way to make climbing my career Ive really never looked back.

AMI has a rigorous child protection and vulnerable adults policy.
AMI members work to a Code of Professional Practice which ensures that all maintain the same high standards of operation.
