How to search
for an instructor

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.

Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.

Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

My first experiences of the outdoors were whilst growing up - camping and canoeing trips with the family and days out exploring the hills around Northern Snowdonia. This extended to trips as a Scout and the completion of my Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school.During my final years of education I participated in a Student Expedition to Madagascar. My eyes were opened to the possibility of a career within outdoor education. Inspired by my Expedition Leader I dropped out of University and dedicated myself to this new goal completing my Mountain Leader Training in 2011 before embarking on a few seasons with PGL to get started within the industry. My first placement at an outdoor education centre was at Blue Peris Mountain Centre between 2013-2014. Afterwards I chose to pursue a career within freelance instructing. Over the course of the subsequent 3 years I had come full-circle instructing for a reliable breadth of outdoor education centres and leading my first of many expeditions two of which were for the same company I had gone to Madagascar with. In 2018 I completed the Instructor Scheme at Plas Y Brenin further enhancing my skill-set and opening up many more opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to work across the UK and overseas ever since; For an innumerable amount of fantastic outdoor education centres and independent providers and through guiding on over 20 student/adult expeditions venturing to some of the Worlds highest peaks. I am forever thankful for having the ability to combine my passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for travel in the work that I do.I remain self-employed working in a freelance capacity for many organisations and privately with my own fantastic clients (www.alexanderkay.co.uk). Nowadays the hardest job is striking a balance between work play and completing a few more qualifications as the years go on...

I am a qualified teacher QTS plus three years Mountaineering and Rock climbing instructor Coasteering Guide Glacier Guide. I have a vast background in walking in all weather in the UK since I was nine years old. I have been walking and climbing all over the UK and further afield. This has been in a vast range of conditions from heavy snow to sunny days. I have trekked in the States New Zealand and the UK. I have worked as a Glacier Guide (Franz Josef) in New Zealand Coasteering and Rock climbing Guide in Dorset and Mountain Leader across all of the UK National Parks. I have done a lot of Duke of Edinburgh and group work with both children and adults. I have dealt with clients in all sorts of situations from sunny days exploring to rescues of other group members. I have completed advanced rope training in terms of winching helicopter loading and casualty extraction both on glaciers and sea cliff rescue with the RNLI. Have been traditional climbing all over the UK and New Zealand since 2006 and have climbed mods to E3 onsight and seconded to E5. I enjoy all aspects of traditional climbing from Sea Cliffs to Gritstone outcrops and to Mountain crags. I have climbed a great deal of very committing routes particularly at Swanage in Dorset where I have climbed nearly everything to E2 including some terrifying loose routes that required a great amount of skill to get up. I think that my belaying rope work gear placing and general problem solving are to a high standard on the crag. I have done extensive amounts of winter climbing/walking and scrambling in very wet cold conditions.

Mountaineering and climbing are the stuff of my dreams and my life. I've been lucky enough to have worked in the outdoors for my working life so far. I started off with kayaking at Bala Canoe Club at 14 years old. I was in love with every adventure I could get my hands on - running rivers, competitive slalom etc. I did the OE one year course at Newbury College - there's nothing else like it in the UK for an immersive OE course. I then went to the Nightwatch scheme at Glenmore Lodge by which time I had totted up an unusual number of NGB quals for my age. I spent the first 15 years as a freelance instructor and with my own business "Chicks Unleashed." I specialised in remote, frontier expeditions, mountaineering, alpine and ice climbing in truly adventurous environments. I have since been working at a private school in Glasgow, where I have the privilege of designing and running their Outdoor Ed programme. True adventure, grubbing about and supporting you to appreciate the delight of our environment and to ease into and toughen your identity. I still get to do some adventures with my own clients.

My name is Dan and I’m a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor with a strong passion for climbing and scrambling. You can find me on my days off making the most of the rock that surrounds me in North Wales. I enjoy sharing experiences and knowledge with others in the outdoors. In that time I have worked to build my experience and qualifications not only in outdoor activities but also in teaching and reflective practice and now hold one of the highest qualifications for summer mountaineering in the UK. When delivering courses I ensure that they are tailored specifically to the clients requirements and prepare them for their next steps no matter where they might be.

Since discovering rock climbing and hill walking with the Scouts I have never been far away from the mountains. I have been lucky enough to turn what was supposed to be a year out into a full time career and I now hold the Mountain Instructor Certificate. We offer rock climbing scrambling guided walks navigation courses multi-activity days and winter mountaineering courses. You can come on one of our advertised dates or we can tailor a day just for you.We can teach you a new skill show you some of our favourite parts of the Lake District or perhaps guide you up a walking or climbing route you have always wanted to do. We guarantee enthusiastic qualified instructors and guides and small group sizes. If you have any questions about a course or a private day please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Climbing started for me when it became clear that the rugby pitch was not the place for a non-competetive mild-mannered and bespectacled eleven-year old. Fortunately a kindly teacher found space for me with another class on the climbing wall and Games was no longer a thing to be dreaded.I regularly skipped school taking the bus into Plymouth then immediately catching another one out to Dartmoor to return at the end of the day sneak past the teacher back onto the school bus and muddle my way through my classmates notes so I could convince my parents I had actually been in lessons. As the end of my school years drew ever closer a job involving climbing was all I could countenance. I had visited plenty of Universities (under the guise of checking out this course or that) and having contacted their climbing or mountaineering clubs previously spent many happy trips to most of the major climbing areas in the country. I thrive on the fact that I can pass on these skills and enable the adventures of others. I thoroughly enjoy working with clients of all ages and abilities from guiding someones first steps into the hills to training other instructors.

Firstly, I would say that all courses I run are student-centred. It's your course! It's not about me. The venue, equipment and course content are all planned in order to facilitate the best learning environment for you. The reason I run these courses is the pleasure I get in teaching people new skills and watching them become self-sufficient. I have a full understanding of different learning styles and the best coaching techniques for each. It's my belief that if a student doesn't understand or isn't able to master a skill it's the fault of the coach! I have been actively involved in the outdoors since a young age and have been working full-time as a freelance instructor since 2000. During this time I have worked for a number of different companies and have had the pleasure of working with a huge number of different instructors. All of these have contributed to the wealth of experience knowledge and skills I have acquired.I hold the highest UK summer mountaineering qualification MCI (Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor) MLW (Mountain Leader Winter) and MIAS L3 (Mountain bike Instructor Award Scheme Level 3) DCA (Development Coach Award) amongst many others. I am a Mountain Training approved provider of Climbing Wall Instructor Rock Climbing Instructor Indoor Climbing Assistant Climbing Wall Development Instructor Foundation Coach Development Coach. So I am coaching the next generation of instructors/coaches.I regularly take part in CPD (Continual Professional Development) courses to keep myself up to date with best practice. For example the BMC FUNdamentals and SAIS latest avalanche courses. I frequently work with other top level instructors and leading outdoor centres all over the country which means I don't always work in isolation and keep myself fresh.

Ive always enjoyed being in the outdoors walking and climbing was a way I could spend more time outside. Walking led to winter walking and mountaineering and rock climbing led to winter climbing and Alpinism. After taking my first flight to South Africa when I was 17 I also began to travel widely together with my interest in the outdoors travel ignited my interest in physical geography. I began to go on expeditions which led to me becoming an expedition leader as well as travelling to various mountain ranges around the world for high altitude mountaineering and ski touring. I continue to explore challenge myself in the mountains and on the crags and spend time experiencing different mountain cultures around the world.

James Miller

James Miller (more often called Jim) began his mountaineering as far back as he can remember. His parents always used to take him into the mountains and hills as a child where he would run off ahead and then wait for hours for them to catch up. His passion for the hills and mountains has therefore stemmed from the time he was able to appreciate being in them as a child and admiring the stunning landscape and views. He has climbed some very hard grades in the past but is more relaxed now and instead of wishing to constantly push his limits he seeks to providing training and assistance to others while climbing for the pure joy as opposed to any thrill. You are just as likely to see him cranking up an e4 as your would be seeing him climbing a VD with one of his friends introducing them to the sport for their first ever time. He holds many different Paddlesport biking mountain and snow sport qualifications making him a full all year round instructor and able to draw on knowledge from many different coaching angles. To Jim having the awards is about proving that he can do what he loves safely helping others achieve the same. He prefers that people judge him on his personal ability and manner once they get to know him as opposed to what a piece of paper says that he can do. As the piece of paper does not describe him but instead only that which he can do.His favourite climbing experiences would arguably be anything where he is touching the snow or the rock. But if he had to pick then possibly either moving together over three different e1 climbs totalling 1500m of ascent in a day or putting up a new 1800m climb in one day in Spain which he never put forward for a new ascent so as to limit any individuals doing the route if they are not able for it.

Come and join me rock climbing scrambling navigating learning new winter skill climbing a winter climb trekking in the Alps of Europe or getting some personal climbing coaching. My passion is the outdoors and coaching instructing and teaching others in this environment in whatever aspect they want to develop. On top of the qualifications I have listed below I am also a Qualified Teacher having spent 8 years teaching Geography.I hold the Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) the International Mountain Leader Award (IML) and the Development Coach Award. This allows me to take you into technical terrain in the UK summer and winter be it mountaineering or climbing as well as walking and the IML allows me to lead trekking routes in Europe. In the process of getting this award I have completed my Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Award (ML) and my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award (MCI). This equates to 40 days training 32 days assessment and a minimum of around 350 days walking scrambling and climbing. I am also a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and am the Development Officer for this organisation. Most importantly however I truly love my job. Call it what you will but teaching instructing coaching or guiding in the outdoors is brilliant. Every day is different as the weather changes the routes vary and peoples abilities ages and expectations differ. Please feel free to get in contact with me so that we can discuss how I can help you fulfil your outdoor ambitions. In the unlikely event that I cannot be the one to help you I will certainly put you in touch with someone who can.

Born and bred in the beautiful mountains of Slovakia, mountains and mountaineering are in my blood. What began as a hobby, very soon became a career. Apart from teaching adults and children, delivering indoor and outdoor climbing courses I now train and assess people to become instructors. I give Technical Advice to numerous small climbing walls and youth centres, routes set and look after the delivery of climbing sessions in 7 schools across London. For my own climbing, whether its ice climbing in Norway, scrambling in Wales, big wall climbing in Yosemite, mountaineering in the Alps, or pushing my grade in sports or traditional climbing I love it all! Climbing has given me many unforgettable experiences and pushed me to my limits and beyond, giving me a sense of achievement and allowing me to explore the beauty of nature as I go. As an instructor, I hope to help people enjoy themselves and come home feeling as inspired and passionate about the outdoor life and climbing as I do giving them the chance to have fun and be challenged in safe hands as they learn. As a trainer I hope to pass on my experience and inspire new instructors entering the industry.

I was inspired at an early age by the Everest exploits of Bonington Scott Haston et al and this set me on the path to become a mountaineer. After various exploits during my time at University I was able to access more in the way of formal training whilst in the Army and this led first to trips to Scotland in the Winter then to the Alps and ultimately to an expedition to climb Archangel Ridge on Mount Foraker in Alaska. My final job in the Army was as the Manager of an Adventure Training Centre in the Bavarian Alps where over the course of three winters I discovered Ski Touring in addition to mountaineering and climbing. On leaving University I qualified as a teacher of Mathematics and Outdoor Activities at Bangor University in North Wales where I was also able to start working through the various Mountain Training schemes.I was fortunate in being able to find my dream job teaching primarily Mathematics but also Outdoor Pursuits at a boarding school in the Scottish Highlands a job I am still very actively enjoying. In recent years I have also started working as a freelance Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader during the school holidays and weekends and really enjoy this additional opportunity to pass on my love of Scottish mountains and crags. In March 2023 I also completed my Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor training course. This qualification has long been an ambition of mine but Covid put plans on hold for a while.

Matthew Cooper

Growing up in a quiet village in the West Midlands I had plenty of outdoor space to keep me busy and the fields and woodlands near my home was where my passion for the outdoors really began. After school and college I left the UK to live in Greece and Canada before returning home to start looking for a career. After a long stint in management and working as a retail manager in a cycle store I made the decision to turn my passion for the outdoors into a career and start working towards mountain leadership and becoming an outdoor instructor. In 2015 I passed my Mountain Leader and Rock Climbing Instructor Award which gave me the skills I needed to set up my own business and start offering courses to the public. Since then business has grown rapidly and I set up The Mountaineering Company in 2018 with the aim of offering high-quality instruction in smaller group sizes with passionate instructors. I now hold the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification (MCI) which is the highest qualification you can hold for summer mountaineering in the UK. Passing on knowledge and skills to my clients is what I am really passionate about and watching my clients go on to have big adventures with their new skills is the reason I became an instructor. As a passionate mountaineer climber and mountain runner I try my hardest to bring that passion with me to every course and feel thats one of the reasons why I have so many repeat clients. Im a full member of The Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) a member of Ogwen Mountain Rescue Team (OVMRO) and a member of Mountain Training and British Mountaineering Council. I also work as a Safety Manager for a number of large participation events and Technical Advisor for large-scale organisations.

I Hold RCI and I am MCI. I love living here in North Wales for the climbing fell-running and the amazing outdoor community. Before working as an outdoor instructor I used to work in the Environmental Sector for the pharmaceutical industry and oil and gas. Im happiest outside and helping others to reach their aspirations.I am currently working with mental health and well-being groups and disadvantaged groups to share the amazing capacity of nature and activity to de-stress and take a break from our internal strife. And in the process develop independence to continue enjoying these spaces and activities into the future.

The autonomy I have with the MIA and WML is fantastic and I am able to develop the students skills to levels where I am happy that they know what they should do... :)Best of all is the fact that I work outdoors for a reasonable time each week so my sanity doesnt get destroyed by the office!Always ready for the next adventure...

I am an MCI trainee with the aspiration to become a WMCI in the furure.I have been hill walking since a very young age. My grandparents took me up Pen Y Fan when I was 6 years old and since then I have been hooked with the outdoors. Every year since then I have ventured to North Wales and the Lake District building upon my knowledge. Aged 13 I joined the Army Cadet Force as a young and keen teenager eager to develop my skills in a more demanding environment and improve my hill skills and navigation. Through the ACF I entered the Ten Tors challenge 5 times and found a love of rock climbing.Aged 16 I took up rock climbing as a hobby which soon developed into UK winter Ice and mixed climbing. When I turned 19 I did a Summer Mountain Leader Training course and 6 months later passed the Assessment. Since then I have continued to train Ten Tors teams for the ACF and lead groups in North Wales and the Lake District. I have always enjoyed passing on my knowledge to others and relish in the enjoyment others gain from learning new skills and experiencing the outdoors. It means a lot to me when I see individuals develop and improve their new found skills in an environment they may not usually find themselves in. This is the basis of why I set up my business At The Edge Mountaineering where I deliver navigation and climbing courses on Dartmoor as well as mountain skills courses in Snowdonia and the Lake District. My winter climbing has now led me to climb in the Alps both summer and winter and take up ski mountaineering and touring.

I am a former military Adventurous Training Instructor and have travelled extensively (6 continents so far) taking part in skiing climbing walking canoeing and any other adventure I could find. A keen hillwalker I completed the Munros in 2010 and am currently trying to decide if I really want to tackle the Corbets next or not. I am now based in Aviemore and am available to hep you with your mountain skills or wider outdoor adventures get in touch and see how I can help.
