Find an instructor

How to use the 'find an instructor'

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

I strongly believe that a good outdoor instructor has more to offer than national governing qualifications. My life skills of working with young people, adults and the armed forces in challenging environments around the world mean I can bring experience and enthusiasm to any future employer or clients. I have taken a wide range of students and clients on extensive expeditions to Norway Canada Africa France and Spain. I have enjoyed this challenging work and I would look forward to working in any environment that clearly values developing people through high aspirations appropriate challenging pursuits environmental education leadership and teamwork. It is important that young people have a sense of ownership of the adventure and challenge they are undertaking. I am able to offer clients and staff the opportunity to gain leadership/coaching qualifications such as Hill and Mountain skills Award Low land Leader Training Award Climbing Wall Award (CWA) UKCC Level 1 and 2 paddle sports in order that they become leaders/coaches themselves and empower others. This would be useful when supporting outdoor education programmes; ensuring clients and staff are kept safe by following best practices.

I am an enthusiastic Mountaineering Instructor working year-round in the Highlands. Ive loved the outdoors since I was a child enjoying walks with my parents along the coasts and over the moorlands of Devon and Cornwall. Once I left for University I discovered a love for climbing as well. This has taken me all over the UK and Europe. In 2010 I decided I could no longer face spending the rest of my life in an office despite enjoying the work and signed up to the Mountain Leader Award. This and my personal experiences with friends at work and at the university club enabled me to get onto the Centre Assistant Scheme at Plas Y Brenin where I worked through the other awards and skills required to become a full time instructor. I enjoy helping others safely discover the outdoors and wild places for themselves.

I was about 11 the first time I went climbing. That was on Idwal Slabs in North Wales. Coming from the West Midlands there werent many opportunities to go climbing outside and so I stored up in my mind that I would take the next opportunity that came my way. That arrived in the form of Leeds University climbing club. From then on my life changed. Since then Ive enjoyed every aspect of the sport including trad climbing sport climbing bouldering and competing for team GB. Its taken me all round the world and stand out places to climb for me are Arapiles in Australia the Needles in California USA and sport climbing in the south of France. When I figured out that there was a way to make climbing my career Ive really never looked back.

Alexander Clay

My first experiences of the outdoors were whilst growing up - camping and canoeing trips with the family and days out exploring the hills around Northern Snowdonia. This extended to trips as a Scout and the completion of my Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school.During my final years of education I participated in a Student Expedition to Madagascar. My eyes were opened to the possibility of a career within outdoor education. Inspired by my Expedition Leader I dropped out of University and dedicated myself to this new goal completing my Mountain Leader Training in 2011 before embarking on a few seasons with PGL to get started within the industry. My first placement at an outdoor education centre was at Blue Peris Mountain Centre between 2013-2014. Afterwards I chose to pursue a career within freelance instructing. Over the course of the subsequent 3 years I had come full-circle instructing for a reliable breadth of outdoor education centres and leading my first of many expeditions two of which were for the same company I had gone to Madagascar with. In 2018 I completed the Instructor Scheme at Plas Y Brenin further enhancing my skill-set and opening up many more opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to work across the UK and overseas ever since; For an innumerable amount of fantastic outdoor education centres and independent providers and through guiding on over 20 student/adult expeditions venturing to some of the Worlds highest peaks. I am forever thankful for having the ability to combine my passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for travel in the work that I do.I remain self-employed working in a freelance capacity for many organisations and privately with my own fantastic clients (www.alexanderkay.co.uk). Nowadays the hardest job is striking a balance between work play and completing a few more qualifications as the years go on...

William J Manners

I have been mountaineering and climbing since around 1983 when I was a member of a group of 6th form college friends who started climbing. We didnt know what we were doing ............. With some tuition from college staff we gained some knowledge. 17 years in the Royal Engineers enabled me to gain experience qualifications and work in the climbing and mountaineering field. I was able to take part in or organise climbing expeditions to a variety of overseas destinations as well as run a Nordic ski racing team and the Joint Services Mountain Training Centre in Ballachulish. On leaving the Services I worked in youth expeditioning for 10 years firstly with my own company then with Outlooks Expeditions latterly as their Technical Director. During this time I was again on overseas expeditions. I spent 4 1/2 years as the Highland Council / High Life Highland Outdoor Education Officer - which was an enlightening experience. Since 2018 I have worked as a freelance Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor with my own clients as well as Glenmore Lodge West Coast Mountain Guides Jagged Globe Dubh Mor and Scottish Rock and Water. I also lead overseas expeditions for Jagged Globe. I have met and worked with some amazing colleagues and clients and feel extremely privileged to still be doing so. In my spare time (as I try not to work full time!) I am a member of Stirling Triathlon Club represent Great Britain in my age group and am a level 2 Triathlon Coach.

Connor Holdsworth

Hi my name is Connor Holdsworth I am the company founder of Atlas Mountaineering. I was born in Bradford although I have spent a great deal of my adult life in Scotland. Since a young age I have always been outdoors walking and climbing it only seemed natural after I graduated from university that I would do this full time. I love helping people experience what the UK has to offer whether it is trying climbing for the first time or taking a group to the summit of Ben Nevis. It is such a beautiful place to live and work and I would not trade what I do for the world. Outside of work I am a keen climber and love going on big adventures recently I have spent time in Morocco in the High Atlas mountains (hence the company name) and the Italian Dolomite climbing and trekking.

Since discovering rock climbing and hill walking with the Scouts I have never been far away from the mountains. I have been lucky enough to turn what was supposed to be a year out into a full time career and I now hold the Mountain Instructor Certificate. I have gained so much from the outdoor environment particularly the Lake District I now enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for the hills with others and passing on the knowledge to go and explore them safely for themselves. I have been actively involved in mountain rescue in the Lake District as a member of the Keswick and Duddon & Furness teams and once appeared in Coronation street.I run More than Mountains with my wife Jill. We offer rock climbing scrambling guided walks navigation courses multi-activity days and winter mountaineering courses. You can come on one of our advertised dates or we can tailor a day just for you.We can teach you a new skill show you some of our favourite parts of the Lake District or perhaps guide you up a walking or climbing route you have always wanted to do. We guarantee enthusiastic qualified instructors and guides and small group sizes. If you have any questions about a course or a private day please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Working for Teesside University I use my awards regularly with the Students and staff delivering skills sessions and leading groups on and in a variety of seasons and terrains. The autonomy I have with the MIA and WML is fantastic and I am able to develop the students skills to levels where I am happy that they know what they should do... :)Best of all is the fact that I work outdoors for a reasonable time each week so my sanity doesnt get destroyed by the office!Always ready for the next adventure...

Having gained my Mountain Leader Award in 2002 I have been actively working in the outdoors for many successive years. Whenever I feel skills fade starting to set in I move on to the next level of qualifications. I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of going through the qualifications then consolidating my skills both through working in Outdoor Education centers and leading overseas expeditions.

The school I went to was a big sporting school and had no outdoor education programme. As a result I spent most of my early years playing rugby and cricket. It wasnt until I started teaching that I thought about the outdoors and its potential in education. The Centre belonging to the LEA I worked for were offering some excellent subsidised training courses. When I enquired about the Mountain Leadership Course it was recommended to me to do a climbing course as it would help with my ropework skills. As a result I found myself on my first days climbing on a multi pitch route at Wintours Leap wearing big mountaineering boots. We did an alternative last pitch with a 5a finish and at the end I was totally exhausted but completely hooked. The other candidates and instructors on the course became lifelong friends and climbing companions and I spent every spare minute of the next 8 years climbing mountaineering and skiing. In march 1990 I was a very proud man sat in Martin Burrows-Smiths office at the Lodge when he told me I had passed my WMCI. Climbing completely changed my life and took me to places I never thought I would or could go. I also hope that it has changed the life of many young people and adults who directly or indirectly have been affected by my work as an Mountaineering Instructor

I have been enjoying all aspects of climbing and mountaineering now for over 20 years. I was introduced to it by my old technology school teacher. Since then it has become a passion and a way of life; being outside in all sorts of weather and doing my best to suffer through the winter days which I love the most! I started the Mountain Training Schemes at 19 back home in Northern Ireland through Tollymore Mountain Centre. Since then I have moved throughout the UK working at various outdoor centres gaining more of the NGB qualifications aiming towards the MIC.I really enjoy just spending time outside in all weather and having the ability to pass knowledge onto others and help develop individuals skills so that they can stay safe whilst having a great experience and enjoyable time in the outdoors.

Ive been a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI) since 2006. Based in the wonderful Wye Valley Im an active personal climber and enjoy all sorts of climbing - whether its pushing my onsight envelope redpointing a sports route adventurous climbing on committing sea cliffs or new routing on my local crags. The pleasure is in the process as much as the result.Theres equally big satisfaction in helping people achieve the things they thought were beyond them. Thats why I love instructing and guiding people both around my local crags and further afield.Whether youd like an introduction to outdoor sport climbing need guiding on some classic multipitch trad or want to learn to lead - get in touch to find out how I can help you achieve your climbing goals.

I Hold RCI and I am MCI. I love living here in North Wales for the climbing fell-running and the amazing outdoor community. Before working as an outdoor instructor I used to work in the Environmental Sector for the pharmaceutical industry and oil and gas. Im happiest outside and helping others to reach their aspirations.I am currently working with mental health and well-being groups and disadvantaged groups to share the amazing capacity of nature and activity to de-stress and take a break from our internal strife. And in the process develop independence to continue enjoying these spaces and activities into the future.
