Find an instructor

How to use the 'find an instructor'

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

I strongly believe that a good outdoor instructor has more to offer than national governing qualifications. My life skills of working with young people, adults and the armed forces in challenging environments around the world mean I can bring experience and enthusiasm to any future employer or clients. I have taken a wide range of students and clients on extensive expeditions to Norway Canada Africa France and Spain. I have enjoyed this challenging work and I would look forward to working in any environment that clearly values developing people through high aspirations appropriate challenging pursuits environmental education leadership and teamwork. It is important that young people have a sense of ownership of the adventure and challenge they are undertaking. I am able to offer clients and staff the opportunity to gain leadership/coaching qualifications such as Hill and Mountain skills Award Low land Leader Training Award Climbing Wall Award (CWA) UKCC Level 1 and 2 paddle sports in order that they become leaders/coaches themselves and empower others. This would be useful when supporting outdoor education programmes; ensuring clients and staff are kept safe by following best practices.

Mountaineering and climbing are the stuff of my dreams and my life. I've been lucky enough to have worked in the outdoors for my working life so far. I started off with kayaking at Bala Canoe Club at 14 years old. I was in love with every adventure I could get my hands on - running rivers, competitive slalom etc. I did the OE one year course at Newbury College - there's nothing else like it in the UK for an immersive OE course. I then went to the Nightwatch scheme at Glenmore Lodge by which time I had totted up an unusual number of NGB quals for my age. I spent the first 15 years as a freelance instructor and with my own business "Chicks Unleashed." I specialised in remote, frontier expeditions, mountaineering, alpine and ice climbing in truly adventurous environments. I have since been working at a private school in Glasgow, where I have the privilege of designing and running their Outdoor Ed programme. True adventure, grubbing about and supporting you to appreciate the delight of our environment and to ease into and toughen your identity. I still get to do some adventures with my own clients.

I started out climbing everything I could as a kid growing up in somerset we regularly went to great climbing venues to walk the dogs so I naturally explored the rock. Then as I got older I started going on an adventure camp in north Wales and started top roping on upper Tremadog. I did a learn to climb course through school and at that point started to think about being an instructor. Some years on and I trained and started work in a centre and hold various NGBs including SPA and ML(s). I used these tickets to help train our instructors throughout the year as well as when I got the opportunity to take groups off site. I was fortunate enough to be able to go on the Jonathan Conville scotland course in 2013 which awakened a love of winter climbing. After relocating to the isle of Skye and having a great trip to the alps in 2019 I decided to launch my business sharing amazing environments with others.

Ive been climbing since I was twelve years old. Its a passion and a way of life. Its also something I love to share whether thats with other experienced climbers or with people who are just starting out. Sharing the adventure is a huge part of it for me. I set up Rise & Summit as a mountain skills training and guiding company offering a wide range of courses with something to suit everyone from the complete novice to those looking to hone their technical mountaineering/climbing skills. We also offer TV & Film safety services from cast and crew safety to stunt doubles and rope rigging to get to awkward places and training whether this is in extreme mountainous environments cliffs or off the side of buildings. We offer technical advice to climbing centres whether this is staff training helping with risk assessments and operating procedures. As the author of the book Climbing Psychology I specialise in teaching people about the psychology of climbing and helping others with their headgame in climbing.

Hi - thanks for reading my story1) An ascent of the North Face of the Tor Rond in the Mont Blanc Massive in a hired pair of crampons no helmet and no ice screws.2) A six week expedition to East Greenland - 3 out of 6 inflatable motor boats wrecked by pack ice and our only communication with the outside world (a military radio) fell into the fjord.3) A whole alpine season in the Ecrin region of the French Alps - solo on the Barre des Ecrin and leadership on the Traverses of the Pelvoux and the Meije 4) An Ascent of the Troll Wall in Norway graded ED - This is Europes biggest vertical rock face - THE VERTICAL MILE - This trip was dreamt up over too many beers one Christmas eve. Worth checking out on google if you the reader are unfamiliar with the face. THe North Face of the Eiger was climbed in 1938 - Trollweggen didnt get an ascent until 1964.5) The Comici and Brandler Hasse Routes on the Cima Grande in the Dolomites of northern Italy - Classic / Extreme North Face Routes ED6) The Cassin route on the Piz Badile in Switzerland - ClassicAlpine North Face 7) NW Pillar on the Cengaloo - Switzerland - A great alpine undertaking 8) Frendo Spur - Chamonix France 9) El Naranjo - The directissima - ED 10) An attempt on THE NOSE - Yosemite. Retreat from a third the way up the face was forced by injury to my partner.11) An attempt on Ama Dablam - Nepal Himalya - defeated by a serac destroying the high camp and high winds.

I live in the Lake District and love teaching, coaching and guiding climbing and mountaineering. Whether it's long days in the mountains, pulling hard on limestone sport crags or doing funky moves on a boulder...I'm pretty happy when I'm climbing. It's a sport with something for everyone. I can explore new places, meet new people, push myself physically and mentally, and enjoy an activity which is inclusive and inspiring no matter who you are. I aim to still be in the hills and pulling myself up rock climbs when Im 80!?I have lived in Yorkshire, the Peak District and Scotland before returning to Cumbria. I started climbing as a teenager, first competing indoors and then learning to explore outdoor climbing and mountaineering all over the UK and abroad.?I studied for a degree in Outdoor Studies and since then have gained many years working in the outdoor industry with a wide variety of clients, activites and locations. I am experienced in youth development work and also currently study part-time for a masters degree in Environmental Education. ?I always continue to pursue my own passion for the outdoors in my personal time particularly in rock climbing. I enjoy being outdoors regardless of the grade, but some specific highlights have been trad climbing up to E6 sport climbing up to 8a and bouldering V11. I really enjoy teaching and coaching others to develop skills for themselves no matter what level theyre at and love sharing my passion with other people.

Louis Kennedy

My name is Louis I am originally from Clapham in London and now reside in Fort William Scotland working as a full time Mountaineering Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader. I have been obsessed with climbing in its various forms for just over a decade but since moving to Scotland have focussed almost solely on traditional climbing and mountaineering: although since qualifying I have a rediscovered love for outdoor bouldering and sport climbing! I started my vocation somewhat accidentally; partly because the act of continuously pursuing climbing is an incredibly fun physical and cerebral challenge but as a result of the incredible people found within the community. I was definitely a bit of a misfit through school and I found a refuge with the sanctuary of the climbing wall. Admittedly I was incredibly fortunate to have many people of influence in my life help me to channel this passion into what it is today; from my first steps trad climbing aged 13 on Stanage in the Peak to my time in the Vauxwall youth development squad to my first Scottish winter climbing adventures. There have been so many wonderfully supportive people along the way to enable those gateway experiences and mould my impression of what a passion for climbing can achieve. Its now a large part of why I enjoy my job so much - getting the opportunity to introduce new people to the sport! I do a small amount of work for myself trading under the name Kennedy Mountaineering. I offer guided climbing adventures and skills courses (further details on my website) but feel I specialise in guiding classic mountain and sea-cliff routes on my Scottish Rock Tours (guided climbing/ bouldering/ sport/ trad/ scrambling) and providing introductory skills courses for new outdoor climbers. The majority of my work is on a freelance basis working with a variety of clients. From schools and youth development programmes to guiding people on their holiday mountain adventures.

I have been enjoying all aspects of climbing and mountaineering now for over 20 years. I was introduced to it by my old technology school teacher. Since then it has become a passion and a way of life; being outside in all sorts of weather and doing my best to suffer through the winter days which I love the most! I started the Mountain Training Schemes at 19 back home in Northern Ireland through Tollymore Mountain Centre. Since then I have moved throughout the UK working at various outdoor centres gaining more of the NGB qualifications aiming towards the MIC.I really enjoy just spending time outside in all weather and having the ability to pass knowledge onto others and help develop individuals skills so that they can stay safe whilst having a great experience and enjoyable time in the outdoors.

Ive always enjoyed being in the outdoors walking and climbing was a way I could spend more time outside. Walking led to winter walking and mountaineering and rock climbing led to winter climbing and Alpinism. After taking my first flight to South Africa when I was 17 I also began to travel widely together with my interest in the outdoors travel ignited my interest in physical geography. I began to go on expeditions which led to me becoming an expedition leader as well as travelling to various mountain ranges around the world for high altitude mountaineering and ski touring. I continue to explore challenge myself in the mountains and on the crags and spend time experiencing different mountain cultures around the world.

My first experiences of the outdoors were whilst growing up - camping and canoeing trips with the family and days out exploring the hills around Northern Snowdonia. This extended to trips as a Scout and the completion of my Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school.During my final years of education I participated in a Student Expedition to Madagascar. My eyes were opened to the possibility of a career within outdoor education. Inspired by my Expedition Leader I dropped out of University and dedicated myself to this new goal completing my Mountain Leader Training in 2011 before embarking on a few seasons with PGL to get started within the industry. My first placement at an outdoor education centre was at Blue Peris Mountain Centre between 2013-2014. Afterwards I chose to pursue a career within freelance instructing. Over the course of the subsequent 3 years I had come full-circle instructing for a reliable breadth of outdoor education centres and leading my first of many expeditions two of which were for the same company I had gone to Madagascar with. In 2018 I completed the Instructor Scheme at Plas Y Brenin further enhancing my skill-set and opening up many more opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to work across the UK and overseas ever since; For an innumerable amount of fantastic outdoor education centres and independent providers and through guiding on over 20 student/adult expeditions venturing to some of the Worlds highest peaks. I am forever thankful for having the ability to combine my passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for travel in the work that I do.I remain self-employed working in a freelance capacity for many organisations and privately with my own fantastic clients (www.alexanderkay.co.uk). Nowadays the hardest job is striking a balance between work play and completing a few more qualifications as the years go on...

I am a qualified Summer ML and SPA and a Geography/Science teacher. It has taken a lot of indecisiveness and time to get where I am but I am glad I pursued what is shaping up to be a fantastic career choice.I started exploring the Outdoors while at university where I joined the Mountaineering club which I eventually became the President of. After only a few climbing trips I was hooked. I didnt think there was a career in outdoor activities at that point and I had already decided I wanted to be a Teacher (like most Geography undergraduates). It wasnt until after university while working in retail that I started the process of becoming a freelancer by completing the SPA. I got a little bit of work using it but only at indoor climbing centres (can you see the irony?). I decided that the ML award was the most natural progression in to the outdoor office but living in the city wasnt conducive to obtaining it. So I moved to North Wales completed my teaching degree and booked my ML assessment passed first time and I was working with my own group the week after. This year Im leading my first overseas expedition to Jordan. It is a good profession but you have to work just as hard getting work as a freelancer as you do actually working. This is balanced by the fact I am my own boss and I decide when I work and most importantly when I do Im in the outdoors or rather Im out of the indoors!.

A lifelong outdoor enthusiast based in the Calder Valley on the edge of the South Pennines I combine formal qualifications with extensive mountain experience across some of the worlds most challenging terrain. With a BA (Hons) in Outdoor Leadership Im equally at home navigating hills with map and compass or leading others through technical mountain environments. Over the last few years Ive delivered specialist training across the Joint Services environment including Winter Mountaineering Proficiency courses for JSMTC at Ballachulish Wing and serving as guest instructor on the annual JSMTC Alpine Concentration. My international experience spans ski touring climbing and mountaineering in Bulgaria Norway Iceland France Poland Tibet Germany (where I lived and worked happily for several years) Africa Jordan Canada Austria Nepal Spain and the USA. Recent highlights include leading summer mountaineering in the Mourne Mountains rock climbing instruction in the Lake District and delivering a 10-day Level 2 Nordic skiing and touring programme at the Joint Service Mountaineering Centre in Skeikampen Norway. Whether delivering formal qualifications or sharing mountain craft, I bring decades of experience and genuine passion for helping others discover the transformative power of the outdoors. I also repair boots and climbing shoes; when the weather is marginal/poor, which happens a lot in the South Pennines, have a look and do pop in for a brew to look at a map or local climbing guide if youre passing.

I have worked in outdoor education for over 20 years. I started life as a teacher in S Wales and preferred to be on the water boating then moved up to the lakes and into outdoor education and fell in love with the crags and fells! I started working on the mountain training scheme in the late 90s. I share the Head of Centre role at Ghyll Head Outdoor Centre on Windermere Cumbria. The centre has been open for 50 years and has an AALS license. I am a technical advisor for open canoeing and mountaineering.I have a real passion for mountaineering and ski touring in particular. Over the years I have travelled extensively to paddle climb and ski. These days I head to the Alps or Scotland for short bursts it fits better with family life! I hold the MIA and winter ML and a range of paddlesport qualifications I love working on the mountain training scheme and am happiest out on the fells :-)

Climbing started for me when it became clear that the rugby pitch was not the place for a non-competetive mild-mannered and bespectacled eleven-year old. Fortunately a kindly teacher found space for me with another class on the climbing wall and Games was no longer a thing to be dreaded.I regularly skipped school taking the bus into Plymouth then immediately catching another one out to Dartmoor to return at the end of the day sneak past the teacher back onto the school bus and muddle my way through my classmates notes so I could convince my parents I had actually been in lessons. As the end of my school years drew ever closer a job involving climbing was all I could countenance. I had visited plenty of Universities (under the guise of checking out this course or that) and having contacted their climbing or mountaineering clubs previously spent many happy trips to most of the major climbing areas in the country. I thrive on the fact that I can pass on these skills and enable the adventures of others. I thoroughly enjoy working with clients of all ages and abilities from guiding someones first steps into the hills to training other instructors.

I am a teacher of Outdoor Education who is passionate about introducing people to climbing, mountains and the great outdoors. During the week I teach in a school in the West Midlands taking young people walking, climbing, mountaineering as well as kayaking canoeing and gorge scrambling. I also teach and coach at Sport Martley climbing wall. I have always been involved in the outdoors and have worked in Tanzania - where Kilimanjaro was my job as well as in Ethiopia where I completed a number of big walking expeditions through the Semien Mountains following routes that few before had walked. I love the outdoors and helping to get people active in the mountains and hills in the UK.
