Find an instructor

How to use the 'find an instructor'

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Firstly, I would say that all courses I run are student-centred. It's your course! It's not about me. The venue, equipment and course content are all planned in order to facilitate the best learning environment for you. The reason I run these courses is the pleasure I get in teaching people new skills and watching them become self-sufficient. I have a full understanding of different learning styles and the best coaching techniques for each. It's my belief that if a student doesn't understand or isn't able to master a skill it's the fault of the coach! I have been actively involved in the outdoors since a young age and have been working full-time as a freelance instructor since 2000. During this time I have worked for a number of different companies and have had the pleasure of working with a huge number of different instructors. All of these have contributed to the wealth of experience knowledge and skills I have acquired.I hold the highest UK summer mountaineering qualification MCI (Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor) MLW (Mountain Leader Winter) and MIAS L3 (Mountain bike Instructor Award Scheme Level 3) DCA (Development Coach Award) amongst many others. I am a Mountain Training approved provider of Climbing Wall Instructor Rock Climbing Instructor Indoor Climbing Assistant Climbing Wall Development Instructor Foundation Coach Development Coach. So I am coaching the next generation of instructors/coaches.I regularly take part in CPD (Continual Professional Development) courses to keep myself up to date with best practice. For example the BMC FUNdamentals and SAIS latest avalanche courses. I frequently work with other top level instructors and leading outdoor centres all over the country which means I don't always work in isolation and keep myself fresh.

Introduced to the outdoors via a crash course in Cross country skiing and winter survival as part of my DofE Gold expedition it was inevitable that I would lean towards a more action filled personal life. I have broadened my personal experiences by climbing and walking as part of expeditions across much of Europes mountain ranges and further afield. These emboldening experiences include early yet formative winter expeditions to the Hardangervidda in Norway the Caucasus in South Russia. Wilderness trekking through the Sud Tirol and Dolomites. Summer Alpine ascents of major Swiss and French alps. Multiple free ascents of classic Yosemite and Tuolumne routes. Multiple bouldering excursions to Fountainblau not to mention innumerable trip/routes across the major UK mountain regions in both summer and winter.Since 2009. I have endeavored to pass my passion for the outdoors over to school children from around the Sheffield area. As a secondary school teacher I have looked to embed outdoor experiences into their development and happily see rapid development in all participants. Mountain walking and outdoor climbing nurture confidence social and environmental awareness team skills and personal reflection - whats not to agree with?Next step MIA and IML!

Ive been climbing and enjoying the mountains for over 40 years passing on skills to young and old along the way! My main motivation is to develop clients skills and watch them progress better equipped onto yet more adventures. I always get a keen sense of satisfaction seeing my clients learn new skills and overcome the challenges they face on their journey. Ive climbed across the UK on all types of crags but just love the British sea cliffs and big mountain crags. My extensive experience climbing overseas includes: USA (California Wyoming Utah Colorado) Morocco (Anti-Atlas) Spain (Costa Durada Costa Blanca El Chorro) France (Chamonix area Fontainebleau Durance Valley Orpierre Annecy etc etc) Tenerife and Sardinia. I was about 11 the first time I went climbing. That was on Idwal Slabs in North Wales. Coming from the West Midlands there werent many opportunities to go climbing outside and so I stored up in my mind that I would take the next opportunity that came my way. That arrived in the form of Leeds University climbing club. From then on my life changed. Since then Ive enjoyed every aspect of the sport including trad climbing sport climbing bouldering and competing for team GB. Its taken me all round the world and stand out places to climb for me are Arapiles in Australia the Needles in California USA and sport climbing in the south of France. When I figured out that there was a way to make climbing my career Ive really never looked back.

I Hold RCI and I am MCI. I love living here in North Wales for the climbing fell-running and the amazing outdoor community. Before working as an outdoor instructor I used to work in the Environmental Sector for the pharmaceutical industry and oil and gas. Im happiest outside and helping others to reach their aspirations.I am currently working with mental health and well-being groups and disadvantaged groups to share the amazing capacity of nature and activity to de-stress and take a break from our internal strife. And in the process develop independence to continue enjoying these spaces and activities into the future.

I first registered on the Mountain Training scheme in 1995.Since then I have completed my MIC whilst being a full time Royal Marine Commando. In that time I have had many climbing and mountaineering trips around the world. The most memorable one was to climb the North Ridge of Mt Everest when on my summit attempt I came across an injured climber over the next seven and a half hours I carried the man from almost 8000mtrs down to ABC at 6300mtrs. For this act of bravery I was awarded the Royal Humane Societies Gold Stanhope medal. Now retired from the Royal Marines I work as a freelance instructor through out the UK.

Since starting climbing in University in 2005 and learning the basic skills to climb in the Mournes and Fairhead, I've always enjoyed helping others develop their skills to be able to climb independently on the amazing crags on our doorstep. In 2013 I spent a year at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre and developed my instructional skills through the Mountain Training awards up to the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, qualifying in 2015. During that year I met, learned from and climbed with a group of highly experienced, skilled and passionate instructors who provided a high benchmark of instruction quality. Now, after 20 years of personal rock climbing and 10 years working professionally in mountaineering and other outdoor sports, I can really see and understand the benefit of the mountain training awards. I love having them and continue to develop my personal climbing and professional instructional skills to continue to help others reach their full potential in the sport.

Growing up in a quiet village in the West Midlands I had plenty of outdoor space to keep me busy and the fields and woodlands near my home was where my passion for the outdoors really began. After school and college I left the UK to live in Greece and Canada before returning home to start looking for a career. After a long stint in management and working as a retail manager in a cycle store I made the decision to turn my passion for the outdoors into a career and start working towards mountain leadership and becoming an outdoor instructor. In 2015 I passed my Mountain Leader and Rock Climbing Instructor Award which gave me the skills I needed to set up my own business and start offering courses to the public. Since then business has grown rapidly and I set up The Mountaineering Company in 2018 with the aim of offering high-quality instruction in smaller group sizes with passionate instructors. I now hold the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification (MCI) which is the highest qualification you can hold for summer mountaineering in the UK. Passing on knowledge and skills to my clients is what I am really passionate about and watching my clients go on to have big adventures with their new skills is the reason I became an instructor. As a passionate mountaineer climber and mountain runner I try my hardest to bring that passion with me to every course and feel thats one of the reasons why I have so many repeat clients. Im a full member of The Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) a member of Ogwen Mountain Rescue Team (OVMRO) and a member of Mountain Training and British Mountaineering Council. I also work as a Safety Manager for a number of large participation events and Technical Advisor for large-scale organisations.

I got my first taste of the UK mountains as a scout at a young age. I was also lucky enough to have supportive PE teacher so I got a taste of the bigger hills on school camp in the Lakes aged 11. By the time I left school I was a keen hill walker & climber.I was in my early 20's when I first started to introduce others to my love of the hills. I then started to discover Scottish winters and the Alps and suddenly it was about climbing and mountaineering too.I had begun to gain qualifications in both climbing and hill walking gaining my ML & SPA in 1994 Since then I have been lucky enough to work all over the UK and worldwide. For example I climbed classic ice routes in the Scotland long rock routes in the Alps Yosemite and Morocco summiting a number of 4000m peaks. In addition to mountaineering I am also a keen caver having descended a large number of caves in the UK as well as a few deep caves in Europe including a classic 1200m deep cave. As a qualified MIA Winter ML IML and CIC work with lots of young people and teach mountain skills to adults; navigation, climbing and mountaineering.I love working with people and seeing them develop, it's why I do this job.

I have been enjoying all aspects of climbing and mountaineering now for over 20 years. I was introduced to it by my old technology school teacher. Since then it has become a passion and a way of life; being outside in all sorts of weather and doing my best to suffer through the winter days which I love the most! I started the Mountain Training Schemes at 19 back home in Northern Ireland through Tollymore Mountain Centre. Since then I have moved throughout the UK working at various outdoor centres gaining more of the NGB qualifications aiming towards the MIC.I really enjoy just spending time outside in all weather and having the ability to pass knowledge onto others and help develop individuals skills so that they can stay safe whilst having a great experience and enjoyable time in the outdoors.

Mountaineering and climbing are the stuff of my dreams and my life. I've been lucky enough to have worked in the outdoors for my working life so far. I started off with kayaking at Bala Canoe Club at 14 years old. I was in love with every adventure I could get my hands on - running rivers, competitive slalom etc. I did the OE one year course at Newbury College - there's nothing else like it in the UK for an immersive OE course. I then went to the Nightwatch scheme at Glenmore Lodge by which time I had totted up an unusual number of NGB quals for my age. I spent the first 15 years as a freelance instructor and with my own business "Chicks Unleashed." I specialised in remote, frontier expeditions, mountaineering, alpine and ice climbing in truly adventurous environments. I have since been working at a private school in Glasgow, where I have the privilege of designing and running their Outdoor Ed programme. True adventure, grubbing about and supporting you to appreciate the delight of our environment and to ease into and toughen your identity. I still get to do some adventures with my own clients.

I am an MCI trainee with the aspiration to become a WMCI in the furure.I have been hill walking since a very young age. My grandparents took me up Pen Y Fan when I was 6 years old and since then I have been hooked with the outdoors. Every year since then I have ventured to North Wales and the Lake District building upon my knowledge. Aged 13 I joined the Army Cadet Force as a young and keen teenager eager to develop my skills in a more demanding environment and improve my hill skills and navigation. Through the ACF I entered the Ten Tors challenge 5 times and found a love of rock climbing.Aged 16 I took up rock climbing as a hobby which soon developed into UK winter Ice and mixed climbing. When I turned 19 I did a Summer Mountain Leader Training course and 6 months later passed the Assessment. Since then I have continued to train Ten Tors teams for the ACF and lead groups in North Wales and the Lake District. I have always enjoyed passing on my knowledge to others and relish in the enjoyment others gain from learning new skills and experiencing the outdoors. It means a lot to me when I see individuals develop and improve their new found skills in an environment they may not usually find themselves in. This is the basis of why I set up my business At The Edge Mountaineering where I deliver navigation and climbing courses on Dartmoor as well as mountain skills courses in Snowdonia and the Lake District. My winter climbing has now led me to climb in the Alps both summer and winter and take up ski mountaineering and touring.

I strongly believe that a good outdoor instructor has more to offer than national governing qualifications. My life skills of working with young people, adults and the armed forces in challenging environments around the world mean I can bring experience and enthusiasm to any future employer or clients. I have taken a wide range of students and clients on extensive expeditions to Norway Canada Africa France and Spain. I have enjoyed this challenging work and I would look forward to working in any environment that clearly values developing people through high aspirations appropriate challenging pursuits environmental education leadership and teamwork. It is important that young people have a sense of ownership of the adventure and challenge they are undertaking. I am able to offer clients and staff the opportunity to gain leadership/coaching qualifications such as Hill and Mountain skills Award Low land Leader Training Award Climbing Wall Award (CWA) UKCC Level 1 and 2 paddle sports in order that they become leaders/coaches themselves and empower others. This would be useful when supporting outdoor education programmes; ensuring clients and staff are kept safe by following best practices.

I am a qualified Summer ML and SPA and a Geography/Science teacher. It has taken a lot of indecisiveness and time to get where I am but I am glad I pursued what is shaping up to be a fantastic career choice.I started exploring the Outdoors while at university where I joined the Mountaineering club which I eventually became the President of. After only a few climbing trips I was hooked. I didnt think there was a career in outdoor activities at that point and I had already decided I wanted to be a Teacher (like most Geography undergraduates). It wasnt until after university while working in retail that I started the process of becoming a freelancer by completing the SPA. I got a little bit of work using it but only at indoor climbing centres (can you see the irony?). I decided that the ML award was the most natural progression in to the outdoor office but living in the city wasnt conducive to obtaining it. So I moved to North Wales completed my teaching degree and booked my ML assessment passed first time and I was working with my own group the week after. This year Im leading my first overseas expedition to Jordan. It is a good profession but you have to work just as hard getting work as a freelancer as you do actually working. This is balanced by the fact I am my own boss and I decide when I work and most importantly when I do Im in the outdoors or rather Im out of the indoors!.
