Find an instructor

How to use the 'find an instructor'

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

I am lucky enough to have had the chance to walk climb and mountaineer in some of the most beautiful places in the world since the mid-90’s. However it was only in 2023 that I took the plunge to change career - from university academic and Antarctic scientist to outdoor instructor. I relocated to Kendal in the Lake District and transferred my passion for teaching from a warm dry lecture theatre to the sunshine and showers of the Lakeland fells. Currently a summer mountain leader and rock climbing instructor working towards my MCI (mountaineering and climbing instructor) assessment in May 2024 I love the variety and challenge of the work. From old hands through to first timers in the hills I enjoy hearing about people’s journey to the outdoors and helping them discover and hone the skills they will need to keep them safe as they pursue their own adventures in the mountains.

For the past eight years I have been working as an outdoor instructor in Scotland England and Wales. The awards that I hold are the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor the Rock Climbing Instructor and the Mountain Leader (Summer). I have used these awards to teach clients how to go trad climbing sport climbing bouldering scrambling and hillwalking. I have also guided clients on rock climbing scrambling and hillwalking routes throughout the UK. The awards have enabled me lead clients in spectacular parts of the UK including the Highlands North Wales the Lake District the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales. Some of the highlights have been guiding clients over the Cuillins on Skye taking clients multi-pitch climbing in the Lake District and teaching clients how to lead on trad climbs in the Peak District. The awards have enabled me to plan days that provided a suitable level of challenge for clients. I can take clients on rock climbs scrambles and hill walks that they might not be comfortable doing by themselves. It feels like a privilege to be able to give clients these opportunities.

I have been mountaineering in the UK and overseas for over 30 years. I live in North Wales on the Isle of Anglesey so I can be found out on the mountains or sea-cliffs on a regular basis. My interests extend to more than just the activities in the mountains and I am happy to chat about the geology of the local area with you as we are out and about.I thoroughly enjoy introducing people of a range of ages and abilities to the mountains. I offer a range of courses as well as private instruction so you get a specialised experience in the mountains tailored to your requirements. If the weather does not conform then I can modify your experience so that you get the maximum out of your time with me.Apart from North Wales my other favourite walking and climbing area is the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain an area of outstanding beauty exciting rock faces dramatic gorges and beautiful remote mountain villages. I will be offering a range of walking and climbing holidaysto the Picos de Europa in 2013 (the details will be available from September 2012).Qualifications:I hold the Mountain Leader Summer Award and the Mountain Leader Winter Award both awarded by Mountain Training UK and I am a trained mountaineering instructor. Having grown up in Germany I initially moved to Scotland to study in 2008 fell in love with the country and stayed. As one of only a few females in the UK to hold the WMCI what I enjoy most is to take people out into the mountains and help them develop their skills to become independent mountaineers and climbers - in summer or winter. I love working with people - young and old(er) - and help them develop in whatever possible. Please get in touch via email (lenabrune@hotmail.com) if you would like me to help you with your goals.

Outdoor Education Youth Worker Geography Teacher Head of Outdoor Education and now a Local Education Authority Outdoor Education Adviser. My awards have been gained during my career journey to support and enhance the work that Ive been doing.Ive derived so much pleasure and enjoyment from being outdoors myself and am forever thankful to those who introduced me back when I was a snotty nosed long haired schoolboy: Day hikes; canoeing at Symonds Yat; walking trips to the Brecon Beacons; Ten Tors on Dartmoor and a week on Skye when I should have been revising for A Levels. All these experiences and those who led them are the reason I became a teacher and ultimately started collecting outdoor qualifications. My qualifications have allowed me to introduce and pass on my skills and knowledge to others. There are few things better than sharing and passing on your passion for something to others. What goes around comes around!

Where to start...? I am mad passionate about the great outdoors. For me my main passions have only come as recent as the last few years. I now freelance as an outdoor instructor trying to inspire others into the outdoors. Before this I was serving in HM Royal Marines. It was always my dream and goal to get my green lid and become a Royal Marines Commando.I think my sense of adventure and travelling where really the underlying agendas to signing up and joining the corps. I had some great adventure training packages doing via ferratta white water rafting skiing and climbing. However i never pursued any of these sports and focused mainly on football. In 2008 after deploying to Afghanistan for the second time I was injured on patrol one day in December losing my left foot to an IED from that point my life took a slightly different direction. After this I found a huge love for the mountains. I try to go out walking as much as possible and have definitely have the bug for climbing. After leaving the marines i began working my through the Mountain Training Awards. I did my MLS training at the Brenin and absolutely loved it. The instructors were so informative and dead chilled out.I have done my CWA SPA and went on to do my MLS Assessment at PyB.If Im not working I will be found cragging walking biking or running.

I am a full time instructor living in the mountains of North Wales with my wife Kate and our 4 children. I have climbed around the world and seen many beautiful places but love living and working in the mountains of Snowdonia.I took up rock climbing as a teenager and have been climbing ever since. I love adventurous climbing favourite rock climbs are routes like the Old Man of Hoy big multi pitch routes on Cloggy or Gogarth. Winter Climbing for me captures the adventure element that I love the short days sunsets cold crisp air and the uncertainty of catching the routes in condition all combine to give a magical experience. Trips to the Alps manage to combine the best of each warm sunny rock blue skies soaring snow aretes and steep ice - often all in one day! I have been lucky enough to climb classics like the Matterhorn Frendo Spur North Face of the Grande Jorasses Mont Blanc and many more. I visit the Alps for fun with friends a couple of times each year for ski mountaineering and climbing and have also climbed in the States Norway the Himalaya Africa and across Europe.

I discovered the Great Outdoors in the mid-eighties and have been a passionate and active rock & winter mountaineer/climber ever since. With a career which started over 40 years ago as an illustrator in the creative industries I have combined both outdoor instruction and creative work for the last 30 years. This has led me to travel and work extensively in the British Mountains enjoying the Welsh Scottish and English Crags as well as climbing widely in the mountains of Europe and further afield to the Greater Ranges of the Himalaya (India & Nepal) Kenya Iceland and Jordon. During this time I have proceeded to gain professional Mountain Instructor qualifications obtaining these during the late 80s and 90s. Over the years I have worked & gained experience both with adults and young people working on a range of adventurous outdoor activities from leading expeditions through to climbing & mountaineering courses. I have worked mainly as a freelance instructor with a number of outdoor & local authority Centres as well as private clientele both involving summer and winter skills.

My walking career started early. I finished the Wainwrights in the Lake District just before my 18th birthday and have also climbed all the Hewitts of England and Wales some of them many times. Ive also done most of the Munros and about half the Corbetts.I was lucky enough to be selected by Gore-Tex to take part in one of their annually sponsored ML Summer training courses held at Glenmore Lodge back in the 1990s. Ive since worked extensively throughout all the mountain regions of the UK with companies such as Wilderness Scotland North West Frontiers Lomond Walking Holidays Wild Ridge Adventure and Shetland Walking and Wildlife. I now live in Cumbria where I run Graham Uney Mountaineering offering guided mountain and environmental walks as well as skills courses for walkers including the Hill and Mountain Skills Scheme Lowland Leader award and Mountain Leader award for Mountain Training and cpd workshops for the Mountain Training Association. I use my ML Summer and Winter qualifications all year round and am also a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) holder and a Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor (MCI) holder so can offer rock climbing scrambling and mountaineering courses too. I just love being in the hills and moors and get a great deal of satisfaction from teaching others skills so they can enjoy the outdoors safely too.

Since starting climbing in University in 2005 and learning the basic skills to climb in the Mournes and Fairhead, I've always enjoyed helping others develop their skills to be able to climb independently on the amazing crags on our doorstep. In 2013 I spent a year at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre and developed my instructional skills through the Mountain Training awards up to the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, qualifying in 2015. During that year I met, learned from and climbed with a group of highly experienced, skilled and passionate instructors who provided a high benchmark of instruction quality. Now, after 20 years of personal rock climbing and 10 years working professionally in mountaineering and other outdoor sports, I can really see and understand the benefit of the mountain training awards. I love having them and continue to develop my personal climbing and professional instructional skills to continue to help others reach their full potential in the sport.

I started my working life as a fireman...I have always sought out adventure!! Later I became a teacher in secondary schools and quickly got involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. In order to oversee this work I took and passed the summer and winter Mountain Leader Awards. I used these skills to take school groups all over Europe - each year we did a big trek....Tour of Mont Blanc; Pyrenean High Level Route; Corsican High Level Route (GR20) and Alta Via 1 and 2 in the Dolomites to name a few. At this time whilst walking and backpacking every weekend I started to develop a passion for Rock Climbing which has become all consuming. In the 1990s I passed the MIA and the MIC qualifications and have used these to train and develop generations of climbers. I love the sport as much as the day i started and still have a massive ticklist to work through! Too many guidebooks and too little time! I love running MTE courses in rock climbing skills and look forward to the new Rock skills development in 2019. Please give me a ring if you think I can help you. Jon

I have been a qualified teacher working full time in schools for 23 years. In that time I have had the fortune to work with some amazingly motivated young people and some exceptional classroom practitioners. They all should be thanked for their patience and for giving me the opportunity to improve my pedagogy as an outdoor professional. I have been a PE Teacher a Head of Outdoor Education Assistant Head Deputy and now Headteacher/CEO of an Academy Trust. As an educator and coach I aspire to help people reach their potential in the outdoors. Providing inspirational experiences and quality learning opportunities that will help them to become confident to take on adventures independently. Holding the MCI & the Development Climbing Coach certificates I offer a wide variety of mountaineering and climbing opportunities both indoors and outdoors. A background in (degree) Exercise Physiology & Biomechanics has certainly been instrumental in breaking down movement patterns and periodising training plans for improved performance. I have led expeditions and climbed extensively in Europe as well as bigger trips to the U.S and New Zealand. I am a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and I aim to provide the highest quality experiences underpinned by sound and up to date theoretical principles.I do not rely on working freelance which has enabled me to take on interesting projects - as long as the big projects fall in the school holidays! I am always happy to network and to share good practice and resources so feel free to get in touch.Additional quals to MTUK: Leadership & Management: FCMI CMgr MEdEducation: NPQH PGCE BSc(hons)Outdoors: Level 2 Coach British Canoeing MBLA Mountain Biking

I was inspired at an early age by the Everest exploits of Bonington Scott Haston et al and this set me on the path to become a mountaineer. After various exploits during my time at University I was able to access more in the way of formal training whilst in the Army and this led first to trips to Scotland in the Winter then to the Alps and ultimately to an expedition to climb Archangel Ridge on Mount Foraker in Alaska. My final job in the Army was as the Manager of an Adventure Training Centre in the Bavarian Alps where over the course of three winters I discovered Ski Touring in addition to mountaineering and climbing. On leaving University I qualified as a teacher of Mathematics and Outdoor Activities at Bangor University in North Wales where I was also able to start working through the various Mountain Training schemes.I was fortunate in being able to find my dream job teaching primarily Mathematics but also Outdoor Pursuits at a boarding school in the Scottish Highlands a job I am still very actively enjoying. In recent years I have also started working as a freelance Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader during the school holidays and weekends and really enjoy this additional opportunity to pass on my love of Scottish mountains and crags. In March 2023 I also completed my Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor training course. This qualification has long been an ambition of mine but Covid put plans on hold for a while.

At University I loved to study and I ended up with a BSc & PostGradCert - this took me to teaching for 14 years. I do love teaching but I was never fulfilled until I discovered that I could teach climbing and mountaineering as a career. My proudest achievements therefore were gaining my Summer (MIA/MCI) and Winter (MIC/WMCI) Climbing and Mountaineering Instructional Awards. I am now in my happy place when I am teaching or guiding people to climb or mountaineer safely for themselves. I have the dream job - theres nothing better than to share my passion and experience with other people to help them discover and build on theirs.

Connor Holdsworth

Hi my name is Connor Holdsworth I am the company founder of Atlas Mountaineering. I was born in Bradford although I have spent a great deal of my adult life in Scotland. Since a young age I have always been outdoors walking and climbing it only seemed natural after I graduated from university that I would do this full time. I love helping people experience what the UK has to offer whether it is trying climbing for the first time or taking a group to the summit of Ben Nevis. It is such a beautiful place to live and work and I would not trade what I do for the world. Outside of work I am a keen climber and love going on big adventures recently I have spent time in Morocco in the High Atlas mountains (hence the company name) and the Italian Dolomite climbing and trekking.

Ive now been climbing for around twelve years in which time climbing has developed from a hobby into a lifestyle. In the past few years Ive made my home among the mountains in North Wales where I work as an Mountaineering Instructor. Now I work and travel to climb whether its in the UK Europe or further afield. My greatest experiences outdoors have been pushing my limit on sport climbs in the Frankenjura attempting an unclimbed big wall in Brazil and walking a very fine line on Indian Face at Cloggy.

Work: The common thread in all the work that Im lucky enough to spend my time doing is the teaching of mountaineering skills to others and guiding people in all conditions all year round. I consider myself to be good at understanding what stage people are at in their exploration of the outdoors and am capable of working out effective ways to get them to where they want to be. I live in the Peak District where I run my company Adventure Expeditions which specialises in providing high quality private courses guiding Duke of Edinburgh Awards and outdoor activities. I also work training and assessing mountain leaders and climbing instructors and provide climbing courses and guided climbing walking and scrambling throughout the summer. In winter I spend my time running winter skills courses guided ice climbing navigation courses and generally enjoying being out in the Scottish mountains normally in the Cairngorms or Glen Coe areas. Play:What its all about! I got into the work through a love of the activities through making plenty of the good old fashioned mistakes and even inventing a few new ones... I love long distance walking running and all forms of climbing (apart from aid-climbing!). I strive to push myself to go that little bit further in all the strange activities we get up to in the mountains. Im always planning the next challenge - Next on the horizon is the Cassin Route on the Piz Badille in Switzerland but this will be the third time of heading out with this route in mind!... Third time lucky maybe? Then Winters on the horizon and Ive got my eye on Central Grooves in Stob Coire nan Lochan and White Magic in Sneachda amongst many other classics Im yet to do if psychological and climatic conditions are favourable! If you have a goal in mind and theres adventure involved I believe I have some good skills and plenty of enthusiasm to help you along the way. I grew up in Stoke on Trent where I was always in and around the Western Peak District before moving to North Wales to train to be a teacher. I have been involved in outdoor learning for a number of years with climbing and mountaineering being a significant focus in my professional and personal life. I moved back closer to the Peak in 2021 and now work as a course manager in an FE college delivering Adventure Sports BTEC programmes. Rock climbing and mountaineering have taken me all around the world to some incredible places and this inspires me the most as a climber and an instructor. From a teaching point of view I love helping others and being a part of their learning journey to build skills and knowledge to empower them to have their own adventures in the mountains is always a pleasure. I'm particularly fond of gritstone climbing but dont profess to be any good at it! Running and walking in the Peak or North Wales is what I tend to get up to most but nothing beats big adventurous trad routes something I think we all need more of in our lives!!&nbsp;</p>

I am a qualified teacher QTS plus three years Mountaineering and Rock climbing instructor Coasteering Guide Glacier Guide. I have a vast background in walking in all weather in the UK since I was nine years old. I have been walking and climbing all over the UK and further afield. This has been in a vast range of conditions from heavy snow to sunny days. I have trekked in the States New Zealand and the UK. I have worked as a Glacier Guide (Franz Josef) in New Zealand Coasteering and Rock climbing Guide in Dorset and Mountain Leader across all of the UK National Parks. I have done a lot of Duke of Edinburgh and group work with both children and adults. I have dealt with clients in all sorts of situations from sunny days exploring to rescues of other group members. I have completed advanced rope training in terms of winching helicopter loading and casualty extraction both on glaciers and sea cliff rescue with the RNLI. Have been traditional climbing all over the UK and New Zealand since 2006 and have climbed mods to E3 onsight and seconded to E5. I enjoy all aspects of traditional climbing from Sea Cliffs to Gritstone outcrops and to Mountain crags. I have climbed a great deal of very committing routes particularly at Swanage in Dorset where I have climbed nearly everything to E2 including some terrifying loose routes that required a great amount of skill to get up. I think that my belaying rope work gear placing and general problem solving are to a high standard on the crag. I have done extensive amounts of winter climbing/walking and scrambling in very wet cold conditions.
