AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

For as long as i can remember i have always had a love for the outdoors. But it was on a school residential trip to mid-wales where we climbed Cadair Idris where my passion for climbing and the mountains began. After school I got an apprenticship at a climbing wall/activity centre in North Devon. Here i was invovlved with the delivery of the NICAS scheme up to level 5 and also took charge of a perfermance development youth group of which 3 members made the national finals of the BMC youth climbing series. After a few seasons here i completed a 3 year outdoor leadership and coaching course at the University of Derby with a 1st hons degree. I also completed my ML and RCI while here. Freelancing extensively across the peak district with these qualifications. After completing my degree i returned to the activity centre in Devon in the spring of 2018 taking over as the centre manager here until COVID. During my time in this position i oversaw the expansion of the centre to include a state of the art boulder wall. I took over as the NICAS director and applied and gained NIBAS level 4 accreditation for the centre. I implemented winter training and development progranmmes for all staff including the new apprentices and oversaw as well as carrying out much of the route setting at the wall. Since 2017 I have been involved in overseas expeditions. I have lead groups to South America Europe Africa and Asia. Climbing 2x of the seven summits and guiding multiple trips upto summits of 6500m in the Nepali Himalayas. Since COVID i have been working mostly in this capacity. I also passed my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor award in spring 2023 and have been working throughout the south west and North Wales wth this since. Me and my partner moved up to North wales in the autumn of 2023 and I am looking forward to exploring our new home that is Eryri and getting to work sharing my passion for climbing and teaching others the skills to go and have their own adventures.
I am an IFMGA Guide and Mountaineering Instructor (WMCI) based in Kingussie, Scotland working in the UK, Chamonix and Norway. Equally passionate about alpine mountaineering in the summer months and skiing in the winter; my guiding activities are now split between Mountain Assurance Ltd and Off Piste Performance Ltd respectively. I am an adept leader with various instructional developmental and teaching experiences. I am excellent at managing and facilitating learning in people and have a positive approach to life with a strong duty of care.
Firstly, I would say that all courses I run are student-centred. It's your course! It's not about me. The venue, equipment and course content are all planned in order to facilitate the best learning environment for you. The reason I run these courses is the pleasure I get in teaching people new skills and watching them become self-sufficient. I have a full understanding of different learning styles and the best coaching techniques for each. It's my belief that if a student doesn't understand or isn't able to master a skill it's the fault of the coach! I have been actively involved in the outdoors since a young age and have been working full-time as a freelance instructor since 2000. During this time I have worked for a number of different companies and have had the pleasure of working with a huge number of different instructors. All of these have contributed to the wealth of experience knowledge and skills I have acquired.I hold the highest UK summer mountaineering qualification MCI (Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor) MLW (Mountain Leader Winter) and MIAS L3 (Mountain bike Instructor Award Scheme Level 3) DCA (Development Coach Award) amongst many others. I am a Mountain Training approved provider of Climbing Wall Instructor Rock Climbing Instructor Indoor Climbing Assistant Climbing Wall Development Instructor Foundation Coach Development Coach. So I am coaching the next generation of instructors/coaches.I regularly take part in CPD (Continual Professional Development) courses to keep myself up to date with best practice. For example the BMC FUNdamentals and SAIS latest avalanche courses. I frequently work with other top level instructors and leading outdoor centres all over the country which means I don't always work in isolation and keep myself fresh.

For the last thirty one years I have worked as an instructor coach and advisor the last fifteen of which I have been self-employed. In addition to my own company Sandwood Mountaineering Ltd work has been for a broad and varied range of clients from National Adventure Centres and Universities to Trekking/Mountaineering Companies Management Training Providers Logistics Oil and Seismic Companies based in the Middle East and the British and U.A.E Armed Forces. The seismic work has been for a variety of clients of various nationalities over a broad variety of terrain types and on both 2D and 3D projects. I have worked as a mountaineer and QC in Yemen Egypt and Kurdistan as well as the UK on both vehicle based and helicopter portable projects. For the last 27 years much of each winter has been spent in Scotland teaching winter mountaineering and climbing. The earlier part of this was for The Irish National Centre as well as other providers. For the last seven seasons I have worked full time for Jagged Globe Ltd. Having grown up in Nepal I started hillwalking and mountaineering at a very early age. Reaching Everest base camp aged 10 I have had a passion for the mountains for a long time. Since moving back to Scotland I have completed a degree in Physiotherapy also a very useful skill to an outdoors person. I started climbing at the age of 9 when I went on a 6 week course at Huddersfield Climbing Wall. From then onwards climbing became my life and I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the UK with it. During my teens I went on several trips to the Alps and at 16 I climbed Kilimanjaro. In my 20s I moved to Cornwall and climbed on nearly every cliff down there ticking off some of the most classic climbs along the way. Im now based in the Lake District and work part time as a Senior Instructor for Outward Bound as well as running my own Mountaineering Instruction business.I started my journey towards becoming an instructor in 2009 when I went on my SPA training in the Lakes. I now hold the RCI Summer Mountain Leader Winter Mountain Leader and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualifications. Im also just embarking on my journey through the coaching qualifications as well as gaining experience towards WMCI and IML.
Before working in the outdoors, I completed a PhD in Surface Engineering at Cambridge researching eco- friendly alternatives to fluorinated waterproof coatings. Alongside this, I developed my passion for instructing through university club volunteering. These early experiences laid the foundations of my coaching philosophy, prioritising experience, adventure and shared journeys over chasing grades. After completing my ML award, I began leading groups and moved toward a career in the outdoors. I completed MCI Training at Glenmore Lodge in 2022 while based in Inverness as an ecology researcher. My role involved developing and field-testing technology to deter deer from forest regeneration projects, and I was offered the job due to my ML experience. I shadowed instructors on Skye and winter climbed extensively while gaining mock student experience. In 2024, I moved to North Wales to consolidate for MCI. I attended 8 CPD days, shadowed MCIs for 5 and logged practice with 15 other trainees. In 2003 he graduated from Strathclyde University with a BA (Hons) Outdoor Education. In 2005 Kieran became an Accredited Practitioner (APIOL) and is now a Recognised Professional (POL) of the Institute for Outdoor Learning and he has been a mentor and assessor for the APIOL scheme. Since 2010 he has been an active member of his local Mountain Rescue Team. Pete is holder of the WMCI the highest UK instructional qualification an Honorary Life Member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors a member of theMIC.org as well as past President of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland. He is also an IRATE level 3 holder and co-Chair of the Route Setting Association.He has led mountaineering expeditions to the Indian and Nepalese Himalaya and was leader of an international expedition to Kashmir which made the first ascents of three previously unclimbed peaks. Notable Alpine ascents include the North Face of the Eiger and the North Face of the Matterhorn both in winter as well as a lot of eminently more sensible routes! A member of the Alpine Club and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he is an SML WML RCI CWI and CWDI course director for Mountain Training Scotland. He is joint author of the globally successful The Mountain Skills Training Handbook author of five other books and enjoys leading groups to various corners of the world from deserts to mountains to rain forests.
I am a winter mountaineering and climbing instructor operating in North wales scotland and abroad
It all started at The Storey Arms in 1988 when for some reason I thought that it would be a good thing to do. I was quite green behind the ears then but had a passion for the mountains. Shorthly after this I trained to become a teacher and that is when the ML scheme really became valuable. Upon passing my assessment in 94 I began using it straight away with DofE groups. MLs in schools were quite rare in the early 90s. Rock climbing and scrambling was the natural progression along with winter routes so I started to log days for SPA and MLW. Living in Kent this took quite a while but I eventually made it facilitated by a move to North Yorkshire. I used all of my MT qualifications on a regular basis as Head of Outdoor Pursuits at an Independent Boarding School for 10 years. Ive spent the last two pandemic seasons consolidating my mountaineering & scrambling skills for my MCI re-assessment and passed the one day re-assessment in July 2021:-).I have become more interested in ultra running over the last few years and combine my love for the mountains and navigation with endurance running both in the UK and in the Alps. I completed the UTMB in August 2018 and the Original Everest Marathon December 2019. Having recently finished a 25 year teaching career I am now entering the freelance outdoor instructor world from January 2020 onwards developing a small business called Mountain Mastery UK which will offers a range of climbing mountaineering courses plus mountain navigation/running courses and bespoke guided experiences.
I began working in the outdoor industry in 2005 as a volunteer Instructor for Greenhill YMCA before going on to do a year as a trainee instructor in Tollymore National Outdoor Centre. After my time in Tollymore I went on to work as a freelance outdoor instructor working for a variety of providers throughout the UK and Ireland.During this time I worked my way through the mountain training awards eventually attaining the WMIC in 2014. This award allows me to work throughout the UK and Ireland in both summer and winter instructing all aspects of climbing and mountaineering.In 2014 I established Jonny Parr Climbing and now split my time between running summer climbing and mountaineering in Northern Ireland with occasional trips to Skye and winter climbing and mountaineering trips throughout the Scottish Highlands.
I have been extensively climbing and mountaineering since 2005 but was brought up in the hills and on the crags as my Dad was also an instructor. Since getting back into climbing and mountaineering I have travelled all over the world pursing my passion. I feel totally content and relaxed in the mountains and love trying to impart the joy of being in the outdoors on others. Since following the MIA pathway I have introduced lots of people to a new hobby be that trad climbing or hillwalking. I get most fulfilment from seeing people who I have instructed going out and sending me pictures of them on their journeys.
I have been enjoying working in the Outdoors for the last 10 years. My main work has been with The Outward Bound Trust alongside taking people to the tops of Munros of Scotland.I have successfully achieved my Mountaineering Climbing Instructor Award long time coming but one of the most fulfilling things I have done.
I have many passions for outdoor sports with climbing and mountaineering being at the top of the list after being introduced to the sport when I was 18. I am always looking for exciting adventures outside of my normal stomping ground of Swanage and Portland. Over recent years adventures have taken me to the all inspiring Yosemite National Park the mighty Dolomites and a rather chilly Rjukan.
Ive been instructing for over 15 years and in addition to teaching skills Im also a Mountain Training Provider for the Mountain Leader Rock Climbing Instructor and Climbing Wall Instructor schemes as well as the Rock Skills and Mountain Skills schemes through my business Mountain Independence.I have also provided technical support for a number of projects including film and tv safety support on a number of occasions for BBC projects Channel 4 adventure films and promotional films filmed in the UK and abroad. Additionally I have worked rigging numerous Vertical Dance projects across the UK and provided mountain support for geo-seismic crews across Iraq and in Yemen.
Growing up on the West Coast of Wales gave me the freedom to take part in many outdoor activities. Attending a school that actively promoted the D of E Awards gave me the opportunity to learn so much more. Following A levels, I worked in different outdoor education environments and knew it was to be in that industry I would make my career in that industry. Being a trainee at Arete Outdoor Centre in Llanrug gave me my first real experience of climbing and mountaineering, and I became hooked! Following my SPA ML Paddle Sport Award and invaluable experience at Arete, I secured an activity instructor role at Ridgway Adventure in the North West Highlands of Scotland. This enabled me to develop climbing and mountaineering skills. Returning there for a second season in April 2019. September 2019 saw me leave the UK to take up a Glacier Guide role in Iceland. Working in the Skaftafell National Park was a fantastic opportunity to explore glaciers and ice caves. Having the awards makes me proud and has opened up a new world for me. I worked hard to get them, and I am prepared for the hard graft to achieve the next steps. My goals are to work towards my WML and MCI and become the best I can be.
Most of my life Ive been an engineer and product designer working to go climbing. I have done many alpine rock routes primarily in the Dolomites become involved with cascade ice climbing created an accommodation business in the Dolomites (Casa Alfredino) worked on climbing equipment designs (notably the WC Friend Edelrid Bulletproof HMS and a line of Skylotec equipment) and generally enjoyed being in the climbing mountaineering and skiing scene. Now I aim to pass on what Ive learned to the next generation helping people who have discovered climbing through bouldering walls get outside and fall in love with that too.
ABOUT JIM / Ive been Walking Scrambling and Climbing for over 20 years. I grew up just north of the Lake District in the heart of the Eden Valley and now live just outside the Peak District. My Qualifications I hold the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award (MCI) which is the highest summer based Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Qualification in the UK. I also hold the Winter Mountain Leader Award. Im First Aid Qualified as well as being fully insured for all the activities I teach. I have been a mountain leader since 1999 and have progressed through the qualifications since and now hold the MIA and WML and have completed my MIC training. My work has been in the Scottish Highlands for the last twelve years where I have operated mainly mountain based instruction. I have worked with either my own clients and those of others such as West Coast Mountain Gudies and have also freelanced at the national center Glenmore Lodge. Expedition work has taken me to Southern Africa East Africa (Killimanjaro) Indian Himalaya and The Peruvian Andes. I am an enthusiastic Mountaineering Instructor working year-round in the Highlands. I am a teacher of Outdoor Education who is passionate about introducing people to climbing,mountains and the great outdoors. During the week I teach in a school in the West Midlands taking young people walking, climbing, mountaineering as well as kayaking canoeing and gorge scrambling. I also teach and coach at Sport Martley climbing wall. I have always been involved in the outdoors and have worked in Tanzania - where Kilimanjaro was my job as well as in Ethiopia where I completed a number of big walking expeditions through the Semien Mountains following routes that few before had walked. Ive loved the outdoors since I was a child enjoying walks with my parents along the coasts and over the moorlands of Devon and Cornwall. Once I left for University I discovered a love for climbing as well. This has taken me all over the UK and Europe. In 2010 I decided I could no longer face spending the rest of my life in an office despite enjoying the work and signed up to the Mountain Leader Award. This and my personal experiences with friends at work and at the university club enabled me to get onto the Centre Assistant Scheme at Plas Y Brenin where I worked through the other awards and skills required to become a full time instructor. I enjoy helping others safely discover the outdoors and wild places for themselves.

I specialise in teaching and coaching small groups often pairs or singles in a whole range of climbing and mountaineering skills so that they can develop into independent and self-sufficient climbers. Traditional mountaineering skills are my main focus including navigation rock-climbing technique snow & ice climbing advanced rope-work and general skills associated with thriving in the mountains - in both summer and winter conditions.As a regular leader of high-altitude expeditions I also offer advice and training for those embarking on their first high-altitude experiences (often on expeditions to peaks such as Kilimanjaro Island Peak Mera Peak and Denali).
I got my first taste of the UK mountains as a scout at a young age. I was also lucky enough to have supportive PE teacher so I got a taste of the bigger hills on school camp in the Lakes aged 11. By the time I left school I was a keen hill walker & climber.I was in my early 20's when I first started to introduce others to my love of the hills. I then started to discover Scottish winters and the Alps and suddenly it was about climbing and mountaineering too.I had begun to gain qualifications in both climbing and hill walking gaining my ML & SPA in 1994 Since then I have been lucky enough to work all over the UK and worldwide. For example I climbed classic ice routes in the Scotland long rock routes in the Alps Yosemite and Morocco summiting a number of 4000m peaks. In addition to mountaineering I am also a keen caver having descended a large number of caves in the UK as well as a few deep caves in Europe including a classic 1200m deep cave. As a qualified MIA Winter ML IML and CIC work with lots of young people and teach mountain skills to adults; navigation, climbing and mountaineering.I love working with people and seeing them develop, it's why I do this job.
I have worked in outdoor education for over 20 years. I started life as a teacher in S Wales and preferred to be on the water boating then moved up to the lakes and into outdoor education and fell in love with the crags and fells! I started working on the mountain training scheme in the late 90s. I share the Head of Centre role at Ghyll Head Outdoor Centre on Windermere Cumbria. The centre has been open for 50 years and has an AALS license. I am a technical advisor for open canoeing and mountaineering.I have a real passion for mountaineering and ski touring in particular. Over the years I have travelled extensively to paddle climb and ski. These days I head to the Alps or Scotland for short bursts it fits better with family life! I hold the MIA and winter ML and a range of paddlesport qualifications I love working on the mountain training scheme and am happiest out on the fells :-)
Born in the Yorkshire dales I am a Scottish based WMCI whos is passionate about helping individuals access the mountains safely and well equipped with knowledge. Wether your after navigation practice (summer or winter) scrambling( classic or unique) munro bagging cullin traverse winter climbing or long term development I am experienced. Havent spent the last 20 years involved in the outdoor industry through many threads from outdoor activity center work private schooling outdoor Ed British military AT national centers NGB training and my own business of coaching leadership and guiding. I have developed a wealth of knowledge living in the north of Scotland over the years. I am a professional coach in other disciplines which transfer brilliantly to the mountains I am approachable patience and student led.
Where to start...? I am mad passionate about the great outdoors. For me my main passions have only come as recent as the last few years. I now freelance as an outdoor instructor trying to inspire others into the outdoors.Before this I was serving in HM Royal Marines. It was always my dream and goal to get my green lid and become a Royal Marines Commando.I think my sense of adventure and travelling where really the underlying agendas to signing up and joining the corps. I had some great adventure training packages doing via ferratta white water rafting skiing and climbing. However i never pursued any of these sports and focused mainly on football. In 2008 after deploying to Afghanistan for the second time I was injured on patrol one day in December losing my left foot to an IED from that point my life took a slightly different direction.After this I found a huge love for the mountains. I try to go out walking as much as possible and have definitely have the bug for climbing.After leaving the marines i began working my through the Mountain Training Awards. I did my MLS training at the Brenin and absolutely loved it. The instructors were so informative and dead chilled out.I have done my CWA SPA and went on to do my MLS Assessment at PyB.If Im not working I will be found cragging walking biking or running.
I live in Glasbury a small village near Hay-on-Wye on the outskirts of the Brecon Beacons National Park. I have been climbing hill walking and mountaineering for the last 25 years and hold the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award (the highest level of qualification for summer mountaineering in the UK) I also hold Winter Mountain Leader as well as a wide range of other qualifications. I am also a keen paddler and caver and have been known to go mountain biking on occasion. I run a business called Adventures With Will and we specialise in providing Mountain Training awards and Technical Advice.
I am a keen and active climber, who happens to also be a Mountain Training Provider delivering RCI, RCDI, ICA, CWI, and CWDI alongside LLA, HML, Camping LeaderTraining and Assessment courses, as well as a Provider of the Foundation and Development Coach courses. Alongside course delivery I provide technical advice for a number of different businesses from small outdoor centres and climbing walls up to and including national organisations. As an experienced Paddlesports coach, British Canoeing provider/National Trainer, I can deliver a wide range of SUP, Kayak and Canoe courses - safety, leadership, instructor and coach education. I am the author of Climbing Games and Top Tips for Climbing Coaches, as well as the co-author of Coaching Adventure Sports. I'm supported in my adventures by Salewa, Beta Climbing Pyranha and Peak PS.
