ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Although I began leading formal groups in the mountains when I was eighteen it wasn t until I was teaching in my mid twenties that I became aware of the Mountain Leader Award. My training course at Fellside Centre was great fun in spite of the usual wet and windy late October weather in 1984. With Cumbria C C funding it all there were about 20 of us on the course and it made me realise I was one of the more experienced and would have a good chance of doing well at assessment. The big challenge in my summer assessment was not so much performing the tasks in the perfect June weather as getting a smile out of Blythe Wright our assessor at Glenmore Lodge. In the end he did seem to relax during the expedition and started to share a few of his experiences like working on the Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood.I went on to do my Winter ML soon afterwards and was relieved that the gale force conditions of my training course were not prevalent when I did my assessment.I began rock climbing in the mid-1980s when I was a languages teacher in a school in South Lakes. After quickly moving on to leading I was hooked by the excitement of being at the sharp end of the rope on a mountain crag. I went to Plas y Brenin for my MIA training in 1995 and for my Assessment in 1997 which I thankfully passed first time. I began my career as an Outdoor Instructor at an LEA centre in the Lakes in 1987 and its a pleasure and privilege to be still doing so.

Climbing is a passion and being able to teach my passion to others is without doubt the best job in the world. Climbing is a way of life to be embraced and every minute of it; whether high on an alpine mountain or pumped on a sports route; should be enjoyed and savoured. If not climbing then what else is there?I started climbing at age 16 on an Army Cadet trip to South Wales. I have never looked back. My rock shoes have sought out grip on routes all over the world; my favourite place to climb being the rock climbing mecca of Red Rocks Nevada. Sports climbing is clearly fun but climbing high above your last piece of decent pro is definitely the way ahead. :)

I am an adept leader with various instructional developmental and teaching experiences. I am excellent at managing and facilitating learning in people and have a positive approach to life with a strong duty of care.

I moved to North Wales in 1991 (when I was 21) and immediately discovered Mountains! Before this I lived in Leicester and worked in an office - so the location and the job limited my opportunities somewhat! I realised they were a great places to go for personal enjoyment and also to use to engage with the groups I was working with. My first job in North Wales was with young adults with learning difficulties (for MENCAP). I have worked in various social worker type roles since then for both public and private sector and have continued to use the outdoor environment to engage with people. I now travel all over the world regularly taking groups up Kilimanjaro and into the High Atlas mountains of Morocco as well as running and supporting various courses in beautiful Snowdonia.Working in such a wonderful place and being able to share my passion and respect for the mountains makes me feel really fortunate!

I was fortunate that in 1987, I was offered a trainee post at an outdoor centre in North Wales called Cwm Pennant Centre. This was soon to be managed by the now Mountain Training Technical Officer and previous Association of Mountain Instructors Development Officer - Steve Long. Steve became my mentor until an ascent of a route called Vulture on the Lleyn Peninsula when he stated the apprenticeship was over if I successfully led the E4 5b pitch. He is now one of my closest friends. My journey through the Mountain Training Awards to WMCI has been fantastic and I met a fantastic friend and climbing partner, Phil Baker, on the way. I spent a few years climbing full-time in the mid 1990s and since then I have traveled around the world seeking adventures with some fantastic friends. This has taken me to Nepal Borneo North and South America including Alaska New Zealand Turkey Africa Patagonia and much of Europe. So that has got to be a very good reason to get climbing and if that is not enough I met my wife on one of these trips and we now have two fantastic children. For a number of years, I managed Apex Training Ascent Training and between 2011 and 2016 I was Chairman of the AMI. I now live in the Lake District and I'm Head of Outdoor Learning at Windermere School.

I have been an active mountaineer for several years and see the outdoors as a vast classroom for teaching and learning. During my time I have climbed and worked in Australia, New Zealand UAE, Germany, Morocco, Spain, South of France, French - Swiss Alps, Africa and the UK. Currently living in the South of France and running a business with my wife Louise who also holds the International Mountain Leader (IML) at Lesparrou Retreats and Adventure. Being situated in the Midi Pyrenees is a fantastic location for all mountaineering activities without the crowds. During the winter I work in Scotland and run snowshoeing courses from our accommodation. We conduct winter Continued Personal Development courses for BAIML members again from our accommodation. Throughout the summer months I am out on the Tour De Mont Blanc and taking groups in the local mountains here in the Pyrenees. In down time out on the crags.

Hi my name is Connor Holdsworth I am the company founder of Atlas Mountaineering. I was born in Bradford although I have spent a great deal of my adult life in Scotland. Since a young age I have always been outdoors walking and climbing it only seemed natural after I graduated from university that I would do this full time. I love helping people experience what the UK has to offer whether it is trying climbing for the first time or taking a group to the summit of Ben Nevis. It is such a beautiful place to live and work and I would not trade what I do for the world. Outside of work I am a keen climber and love going on big adventures recently I have spent time in Morocco in the High Atlas mountains (hence the company name) and the Italian Dolomite climbing and trekking.

I live in Llanberis North Wales working as a climbing and mountaineering instructor and teaching Outdoor Education. I am passionate about working in the outdoors and the exceptional opportunities it can provide for young people and adults.Originally from London I moved to Leeds in 1998 and worked as a youth worker; developing programmes for the personal development of young women using a range of outdoor activities team games and art-based work. A personal love of being in the hills and in wild open spaces led naturally to encouraging others to find such pleasure. I started to run courses on teaching Outdoor Education and gained qualifications in rock climbing (SPA) and the hillwalking (ML). I worked for Leeds City Council at their residential outdoor education centre Herd Farm running climbing high ropes mountain biking and archery activities. In 2007 I packed it all in to travel and work in New Zealand. On my return to the UK I moved to North Wales where I worked at the Mountain Training England office. I also gained the Mountaineering Instructor Award (MIA) which allowed me to become a full time freelance instructor. In 2019 myself and Pete Marshall set up Latitude 534 - With a combined 30years working in the outdoors we wanted to build a company that reflected not just the wealth of our experience but also the quality of the work we provide. Not just run of the mill activities but quality instruction; supportive and inclusive access to the outdoors. The rest of the time I have free to spend climbing and walking in the incredible mountains of Snowdonia. And hiding from the rain!

Whilst a teenager I was introduced to the outdoors by being in the Scouts. I enjoyed rock climbing and hill walking along with many other activities such as kayaking and mountain biking. As a Uni student, I was offered the opportunity to undertake SPA Training and then ML Training. Whilst still at University I took the SPA assessment and then promptly started a career as a Police Officer which kept me busy. I managed to get out on days off but shifts made it difficult to continue with my hobbies. In 2005 I finally managed to get round to doing ML Assessment and in 2007 I finally left the Police and worked at a FE College teaching Outdoor Education. In 2009 and 2010 respectively I gained WML and MIA. In August 2018 I left teaching at a college to concentrate on my own business and with a bit more free time in Feb 2020 I finally achieved the WMCI. I now spend my time running Mountain Training and Royal Lifesaving Society courses as well as undertaking AALA inspections.

I also spend a lot of time on the hills, walking, scrambling and working on the Mountain Training schemes to support folks journey to becoming instructors.

James Miller (more often called Jim) began his mountaineering as far back as he can remember. His parents always used to take him into the mountains and hills as a child where he would run off ahead and then wait for hours for them to catch up. His passion for the hills and mountains has therefore stemmed from the time he was able to appreciate being in them as a child and admiring the stunning landscape and views. He has climbed some very hard grades in the past but is more relaxed now and instead of wishing to constantly push his limits he seeks to providing training and assistance to others while climbing for the pure joy as opposed to any thrill. You are just as likely to see him cranking up an e4 as your would be seeing him climbing a VD with one of his friends introducing them to the sport for their first ever time. He holds many different Paddlesport biking mountain and snow sport qualifications making him a full all year round instructor and able to draw on knowledge from many different coaching angles. To Jim having the awards is about proving that he can do what he loves safely helping others achieve the same. He prefers that people judge him on his personal ability and manner once they get to know him as opposed to what a piece of paper says that he can do. As the piece of paper does not describe him but instead only that which he can do.His favourite climbing experiences would arguably be anything where he is touching the snow or the rock. But if he had to pick then possibly either moving together over three different e1 climbs totalling 1500m of ascent in a day or putting up a new 1800m climb in one day in Spain which he never put forward for a new ascent so as to limit any individuals doing the route if they are not able for it.

Apart from teaching adults and children, delivering indoor and outdoor climbing courses I now train and assess people to become instructors. Climbing has given me many unforgettable experiences and pushed me to my limits and beyond, giving me a sense of achievement and allowing me to explore the beauty of nature as I go. As an instructor, I hope to help people enjoy themselves and come home feeling as inspired and passionate about the outdoor life and climbing as I do giving them the chance to have fun and be challenged in safe hands as they learn.
