ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Asides from the UK other regions I have operated in are Africa Alaska Antarctica the Andes the Arctic the European Alps the Hajar Mountains and the Himalayas. Therefore I have a vast amount of experience managing people in challenging terrain including at high altitudes and in extreme cold and hot environments. I am a qualified teacher (PGCE) teaching geography to 11-18 year old students and hold two BSc degrees in Outdoor & Sport Studies and Zoology.

I started my working life as a fireman...I have always sought out adventure!! Later I became a teacher in secondary schools and quickly got involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. In order to oversee this work I took and passed the summer and winter Mountain Leader Awards. I used these skills to take school groups all over Europe - each year we did a big trek....Tour of Mont Blanc; Pyrenean High Level Route; Corsican High Level Route (GR20) and Alta Via 1 and 2 in the Dolomites to name a few. At this time whilst walking and backpacking every weekend I started to develop a passion for Rock Climbing which has become all consuming. In the 1990s I passed the MIA and the MIC qualifications and have used these to train and develop generations of climbers. I love the sport as much as the day i started and still have a massive ticklist to work through! Too many guidebooks and too little time! I love running MTE courses in rock climbing skills and look forward to the new Rock skills development in 2019. Please give me a ring if you think I can help you. Jon

Ive been a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI) since 2006. Based in the wonderful Wye Valley Im an active personal climber and enjoy all sorts of climbing - whether its pushing my onsight envelope redpointing a sports route adventurous climbing on committing sea cliffs or new routing on my local crags. The pleasure is in the process as much as the result.Theres equally big satisfaction in helping people achieve the things they thought were beyond them. Thats why I love instructing and guiding people both around my local crags and further afield.Whether youd like an introduction to outdoor sport climbing need guiding on some classic multipitch trad or want to learn to lead - get in touch to find out how I can help you achieve your climbing goals.

I moved to North Wales in 1991 (when I was 21) and immediately discovered Mountains! Before this I lived in Leicester and worked in an office - so the location and the job limited my opportunities somewhat! I realised they were a great places to go for personal enjoyment and also to use to engage with the groups I was working with. My first job in North Wales was with young adults with learning difficulties (for MENCAP). I have worked in various social worker type roles since then for both public and private sector and have continued to use the outdoor environment to engage with people. I now travel all over the world regularly taking groups up Kilimanjaro and into the High Atlas mountains of Morocco as well as running and supporting various courses in beautiful Snowdonia.Working in such a wonderful place and being able to share my passion and respect for the mountains makes me feel really fortunate!

I am the BMC access volunteer for the Staffordshire Gritstone area and the AMI Peak Area Rep. I regularly contribute to different climbing magazines and have worked on several of the guidebook teams for Peak District guidebooks. As well as holding the MCI I am also a teacher and run my own climbing company Five Clouds Climbing. I climb most days and I am fortunate enough to be sponsored by Boreal. Outside of climbing I have a young family and a keen interest in dog training astrophotography and quite like things to do with cars.

I started climbing and mountaineering at 14. I have climbed and led expeditions all over the world on six continents. I train and assess HML ML and I am one the UKs most experienced SPA providers having trained and assessed on over 100 courses.I live in Sheffield but spend my winters in Scotland.I am also a qualified photojournalist and was lucky enough to accompany and photograph Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker on their legendary American Wideboyz road trip which culminated in their ascent of the hardest off-width rock climb in the world.

My name is Barry Thomas better know as Baz. I own and run Crag 2 Mountain with my wife Georgia based in South Devon on the Dartmoor National Park. Im a former Royal Marines Commando and have been mountaineering & climbing all over the world since 2002.I started to volunteer at my local climbing wall as a kids climbing instructor on a saturday mornings. I really enjoyed instructing and coaching so decided to take it further and I embarked on gaining National Qualifications along side my military adventure training qualifications. I am currently working towards my Winter Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor (WMCI) Award.

I first tried rock climbing when I was 11 years old. I had no idea that I would spend the rest of my life climbing. Things worked out well! Based in North Wales I spend most of my working time in the mountains climbing scrambling walking as well and kayaking and canoeing and working on national governing body awards. I spend most of my time off on adventures.

I am an enthusiastic Mountaineering Instructor working year-round in the Highlands. I'm lucky enough to call Fort William home and you will either find me out for myself through Scottish Mountain Skills or working freelance for other providers teaching or guiding in the mountains. When not working I can be found rock, winter or alpine climbing around the world.

I am a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor based in the Lake District England. I own and run Lakes Adventure which specialises in climbing experiences and courses.

The school I went to was a big sporting school and had no outdoor education programme. As a result I spent most of my early years playing rugby and cricket. It wasnt until I started teaching that I thought about the outdoors and its potential in education. The Centre belonging to the LEA I worked for were offering some excellent subsidised training courses. When I enquired about the Mountain Leadership Course it was recommended to me to do a climbing course as it would help with my ropework skills. As a result I found myself on my first days climbing on a multi pitch route at Wintours Leap wearing big mountaineering boots. We did an alternative last pitch with a 5a finish and at the end I was totally exhausted but completely hooked. The other candidates and instructors on the course became lifelong friends and climbing companions and I spent every spare minute of the next 8 years climbing mountaineering and skiing. In march 1990 I was a very proud man sat in Martin Burrows-Smiths office at the Lodge when he told me I had passed my WMCI. Climbing completely changed my life and took me to places I never thought I would or could go. I also hope that it has changed the life of many young people and adults who directly or indirectly have been affected by my work as an Mountaineering Instructor

I discovered the Great Outdoors in the mid-eighties and have been a passionate and active rock & winter mountaineer/climber ever since. This has led me to travel and work extensively in the British Mountains enjoying the Welsh Scottish and English Crags as well as climbing widely in the mountains of Europe and further afield to the Greater Ranges of the Himalaya (India & Nepal) Kenya Iceland and Jordon. During this time I have proceeded to gain professional Mountain Instructor qualifications obtaining these during the late 80s and 90s. Over the years I have worked & gained experience both with adults and young people working on a range of adventurous outdoor activities from leading expeditions through to climbing & mountaineering courses. I have worked mainly as a freelance instructor with a number of outdoor & local authority Centres as well as private clientele both involving summer and winter skills.

Whilst a teenager I was introduced to the outdoors by being in the Scouts. I enjoyed rock climbing and hill walking along with many other activities such as kayaking and mountain biking. As a Uni student, I was offered the opportunity to undertake SPA Training and then ML Training. Whilst still at University I took the SPA assessment and then promptly started a career as a Police Officer which kept me busy. I managed to get out on days off but shifts made it difficult to continue with my hobbies. In 2005 I finally managed to get round to doing ML Assessment and in 2007 I finally left the Police and worked at a FE College teaching Outdoor Education. In 2009 and 2010 respectively I gained WML and MIA. In August 2018 I left teaching at a college to concentrate on my own business and with a bit more free time in Feb 2020 I finally achieved the WMCI. I now spend my time running Mountain Training and Royal Lifesaving Society courses as well as undertaking AALA inspections.

My awards have been gained during my career journey to support and enhance the work that Ive been doing.Ive derived so much pleasure and enjoyment from being outdoors myself and am forever thankful to those who introduced me back when I was a snotty nosed long haired schoolboy: Day hikes; canoeing at Symonds Yat; walking trips to the Brecon Beacons; Ten Tors on Dartmoor and a week on Skye when I should have been revising for A Levels.
