ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Growing up in a quiet village in the West Midlands I had plenty of outdoor space to keep me busy and the fields and woodlands near my home was where my passion for the outdoors really began. After school and college I left the UK to live in Greece and Canada before returning home to start looking for a career. After a long stint in management and working as a retail manager in a cycle store I made the decision to turn my passion for the outdoors into a career and start working towards mountain leadership and becoming an outdoor instructor. In 2015 I passed my Mountain Leader and Rock Climbing Instructor Award which gave me the skills I needed to set up my own business and start offering courses to the public. Since then business has grown rapidly and I set up The Mountaineering Company in 2018 with the aim of offering high-quality instruction in smaller group sizes with passionate instructors. I now hold the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification (MCI) which is the highest qualification you can hold for summer mountaineering in the UK. Passing on knowledge and skills to my clients is what I am really passionate about and watching my clients go on to have big adventures with their new skills is the reason I became an instructor. As a passionate mountaineer climber and mountain runner I try my hardest to bring that passion with me to every course and feel thats one of the reasons why I have so many repeat clients. Im a full member of The Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) a member of Ogwen Mountain Rescue Team (OVMRO) and a member of Mountain Training and British Mountaineering Council. I also work as a Safety Manager for a number of large participation events and Technical Advisor for large-scale organisations.

Im a lifelong outdoor instructor... started working for PGL in 1982 and still loving it!Currently I work part time for Plas y Brenin leading the majority of the activities that we do here.I also work part time as an inspector for AALA (the HSE outdoor centre safety inspectorate) and the ATSR (the military equivalent).Im interested in all aspects of mountaineering and cimbing but also am a Level 5 kayak coach ageing raft guide and Mountain Bike Leader/ Coach. This breadth of experience working in other areas of the outdoor world gives me access to knowledge that fits well with my qualification and experiences working in the mountains and on the crags of the UK and further afield.

I have a great love of the Scottish outdoors and am enthusiastic about teaching and introducing others to climbing and walking in the highlands and islands of Scotland. I believe a day on the hills (as the saying goes...) is "about the journey, not the destination" and want to provide my clients with an experience of Scotland and the outdoors that will be enjoyable and inspirational.

At University I loved to study and I ended up with a BSc & PostGradCert - this took me to teaching for 14 years. I do love teaching but I was never fulfilled until I discovered that I could teach climbing and mountaineering as a career. My proudest achievements therefore were gaining my Summer (MIA/MCI) and Winter (MIC/WMCI) Climbing and Mountaineering Instructional Awards. I am now in my happy place when I am teaching or guiding people to climb or mountaineer safely for themselves. I have the dream job - theres nothing better than to share my passion and experience with other people to help them discover and build on theirs.

I am a qualified teacher QTS plus three years Mountaineering and Rock climbing instructor Coasteering Guide Glacier Guide. I have a vast background in walking in all weather in the UK since I was nine years old. I have been walking and climbing all over the UK and further afield. This has been in a vast range of conditions from heavy snow to sunny days. I have trekked in the States New Zealand and the UK. I have worked as a Glacier Guide (Franz Josef) in New Zealand Coasteering and Rock climbing Guide in Dorset and Mountain Leader across all of the UK National Parks. I have done a lot of Duke of Edinburgh and group work with both children and adults. I have dealt with clients in all sorts of situations from sunny days exploring to rescues of other group members. I have completed advanced rope training in terms of winching helicopter loading and casualty extraction both on glaciers and sea cliff rescue with the RNLI. Have been traditional climbing all over the UK and New Zealand since 2006 and have climbed mods to E3 onsight and seconded to E5. I enjoy all aspects of traditional climbing from Sea Cliffs to Gritstone outcrops and to Mountain crags. I have climbed a great deal of very committing routes particularly at Swanage in Dorset where I have climbed nearly everything to E2 including some terrifying loose routes that required a great amount of skill to get up. I think that my belaying rope work gear placing and general problem solving are to a high standard on the crag. I have done extensive amounts of winter climbing/walking and scrambling in very wet cold conditions.

I love the outdoors and I'm keen to share this gift with others via the skills and experiences I've gained doing various Mountain Training Awards. My ultimate outdoor experiences include anything from gentle hill walks through to climbs or runs at my limit and almost anything in between. I specifically love the outdoors for the ever-changing light for broad expanses of sky / mountains / ocean ideally with a bit of native forestry in the middle distance for perspective. My outdoor interests include cycling, climbing, walking and running, which Ive been lucky enough to pursue in the UK and across six continents over the last 30 years. Get in touch if I can help with any of your outdoor goals.

I began climbing whilst at school in Bristol. I distinctly remember my first day in the Avon Gorge because the Council blew up Teatime Ledge! A year later Id bought a pair of EBs a harness & a rope & was already instructing younger pupils. The school took regular trips to Eryri so I was also introduced to the mountains early on. My third walk was across Crib Goch: I dont think Id ever been so frightened but somehow I kept calm & continued. Its hardly surprising therefore that I decided to study at Bangor University but I spent my summers instructing climbing & canoeing in the USA. Instructing led me into teaching & I was lucky because Avon LEA paid for me to do my NGB awards in climbing hill-walking & canoeing. Theyd be glad to know that their investment paid off as I continued to do this throughout 30 years of teaching whether it was preparing pupils for the infamous Ten Tors paddling the Avon & Wye abseiling down the Sea Walls or completing DoEA expeditions in Eryri & The Lake District. I pursued the MCI to take my son multi-pitch climbing safely & didnt foresee the doors it would subsequently open. When I looked for a way to escape teaching a new path presented itself as I was offered work training prospective MLs & RCIs. I really enjoy this work as I get to meet so many enthusiastic people who want to share their love of the mountains & after 40 years in the hills I have a wealth of experience to draw on to answer their questions. Being able to take folk to the more secluded areas of Eryri than they might be familiar with is also gratifying.Climbing & hill-walking teaching & instructing have been inextricably entwined in my life for over 40 years. They have taken me all over the world & made me many lifelong friends. I still bump into ex-pupils & their huge smiles tell me that my career choice was a good one for in many cases it has changed lives for the better forever. But then I knew that because its my story too.
