AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Hello! Im a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor based on the edge of the Peak District. As such my work is varied and massively rewarding! I spend a fair bit of time working on the local Grit and Limestone helping people become better and more independent climbers. For 20 years I have been leading walks and running navigation courses not taking for granted the inspiring landscapes I call my office. I value being able to finish a days work in the Peak District and return to my family but enjoy getting around the UK from my central base. If I had to pick what I enjoy doing the most each year it would be guiding steep ice throughout Norway in the winter and working on the Cuillin Ridge in the Spring and Summer. I work as a Mountain Training Course Director for the Hill and Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader Qualifications and have been involved in the training and support of climbing instructors for various organisations. As such I offer staff training and technical advice to various high ropes courses and climbing walls supporting better provision for a range of client groups. I have a wide angle lensed view of our industry and have worked in technical industrial fields as well as recreational. I am an IRATA L2 technician and bring together knowledge from a range of applications to run an Abseil Events company alongside my Mountaineering Instruction. Im often found on the top of buildings and man made structures meeting the vision of demanding clients. I have been a Committee member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors for a number of terms representing and supporting fellow Mountaineering Instructors in co-opted and elected roles. I�m also a Cave Leader Paddlesport Coach and MTB leader. And I do enjoy a good road bike ride when I get a chance. But dont hold that against me...

Zac is an experienced health & safety consultant logistics manager mountain instructor and mountain & polar expedition guide based in the English Lake District. As a keen rock climber the draw of the sea cliffs on Anglesey and the easy access cragging in Snowdonia make this a great place to live. I have climbed all over the world highlights include; North face of the Eiger Big Walls in Yosemite 4000m summits in the Alps adventure climbing in Jordan and expedition climbing in Kenya. I have spent numerous winters in Scotland enjoying the more remote regions of the north west highlands as well as spending plenty of time in the Cairngorms and around Ben Nevis ice and mixed climbing and winter mountaineering. I have also spent time ski mountaineering in the Alps and Morocco!I started out helping with school mountineering trips whilst studying Geography at The University of Aberstwyth got more into climbing. At the end of the 3 years I headed to Eryri to be a centre assistant at Plas y Brenin and my career as an instructor began. After 15 months being immersed in climbing & instructing I worked as a freelancer then as an Instructor at Kent Mountain Centre Llanberis followed by Ogwen Cottage. With vital experience under my belt I headed back to Plas y Brenin as an instructor then a senior instructor. I progresses through the mountain training awards at the start of my career completeing Summer ML and SPA in my early twenties MIA mid twenties and WMCI a couple of years later. I finally got round to completing the IML after I had started a family.

Ive been working in the Scottish Highlands as an instructor since 2011 and have built up qualifications over that time. I love teaching skills so folk can become independent in the mountains and can start go on their own adventures safely. I enjoy a variety of work from guiding mountaineering routes in the Cuillin to teaching rock climbing and delivering Mountain Leader courses to new instructors.Ive been a member of Oban Mountain Rescue Team since 2013 and Im the training office and one of the callout managers. Its something I enjoy being part of and helping train up some quite specialist skills like avalanche rescue and technical rigging. Over the last few years Ive been doing lots of work with affinity groups and raising awareness on the range of barriers that might prevent access to the outdoors. Increasing visibility and access is something Im really passionate about and work on both in the hills as well as delivering talks and writing articles. When Im not working in the hills I love getting out to explore new areas through a cool scramble or long rock climb and even better if its mixed with a bit of mountain biking!

I was inspired at an early age by the Everest exploits of Bonington Scott Haston et al and this set me on the path to become a mountaineer.After various exploits during my time at University I was able to access more in the way of formal training whilst in the Army and this led first to trips to Scotland in the Winter then to the Alps and ultimately to an expedition to climb Archangel Ridge on Mount Foraker in Alaska.My final job in the Army was as the Manager of an Adventure Training Centre in the Bavarian Alps where over the course of three winters I discovered Ski Touring in addition to mountaineering and climbing.On leaving University I qualified as a teacher of Mathematics and Outdoor Activities at Bangor University in North Wales where I was also able to start working through the various Mountain Training schemes.I was fortunate in being able to find my dream job teaching primarily Mathematics but also Outdoor Pursuits at a boarding school in the Scottish Highlands a job I am still very actively enjoying.In recent years I have also started working as a freelance Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader during the school holidays and weekends and really enjoy this additional opportunity to pass on my love of Scottish mountains and crags. I am a keen hill walker mountaineer and climber. I'm extremely active in all three of these sports and have accumulated a wealth of experience stretching back to my first notable adventure in to the mountains in 1992 (Austrian Alps). In pursuit of these activities I have travelled throughout Britain as well as further a field in places such as the Alps the Andes South-East Asia North and East Africa. I currently hold the Summer Mountain Leader Award (MLS) the Winter Mountain Leader Award (MLW) the Rock Climbing Instructor Award (RCI) the Climbing Wall Leading Award (CWLA) and the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award (MCI). I am also a degree graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Geography & Sport. As an instructor my primary role is to give people an enjoyable and safe time; ultimately aiming to provide a fantastic sense of adventure whilst climbing or in the mountains and also help people to learn a great deal in the process. I have been instructing for over a decade now and still enjoy every moment. My work is diverse and extremely rewarding with my customers and clients always unfailingly inspiring interesting and enjoyable to be around.
I grew up in Stoke on Trent where I was always in and around the Western Peak District before moving to North Wales to train to be a teacher. I have been involved in outdoor learning for a number of years with climbing and mountaineering being a significant focus in my professional and personal life. I moved back closer to the Peak in 2021 and now work as a course manager in an FE college delivering Adventure Sports BTEC programmes. Rock climbing and mountaineering have taken me all around the world to some incredible places and this inspires me the most as a climber and an instructor. From a teaching point of view I love helping others and being a part of their learning journey to build skills and knowledge to empower them to have their own adventures in the mountains is always a pleasure. I'm particularly fond of gritstone climbing but dont profess to be any good at it! Running and walking in the Peak or North Wales is what I tend to get up to most but nothing beats big adventurous trad routes something I think we all need more of in our lives!! </p>
My walking career started early. I finished the Wainwrights in the Lake District just before my 18th birthday and have also climbed all the Hewitts of England and Wales some of them many times. Ive also done most of the Munros and about half the Corbetts.I was lucky enough to be selected by Gore-Tex to take part in one of their annually sponsored ML Summer training courses held at Glenmore Lodge back in the 1990s. Ive since worked extensively throughout all the mountain regions of the UK with companies such as Wilderness Scotland North West Frontiers Lomond Walking Holidays Wild Ridge Adventure and Shetland Walking and Wildlife. I now live in Cumbria where I run Graham Uney Mountaineering offering guided mountain and environmental walks as well as skills courses for walkers including the Hill and Mountain Skills Scheme Lowland Leader award and Mountain Leader award for Mountain Training and cpd workshops for the Mountain Training Association. I use my ML Summer and Winter qualifications all year round and am also a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) holder and a Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor (MCI) holder so can offer rock climbing scrambling and mountaineering courses too. I just love being in the hills and moors and get a great deal of satisfaction from teaching others skills so they can enjoy the outdoors safely too.
I am lucky enough to have had the chance to walk climb and mountaineer in some of the most beautiful places in the world since the mid-90’s. However it was only in 2023 that I took the plunge to change career - from university academic and Antarctic scientist to outdoor instructor. I relocated to Kendal in the Lake District and transferred my passion for teaching from a warm dry lecture theatre to the sunshine and showers of the Lakeland fells. Currently a summer mountain leader and rock climbing instructor working towards my MCI (mountaineering and climbing instructor) assessment in May 2024 I love the variety and challenge of the work. From old hands through to first timers in the hills I enjoy hearing about people’s journey to the outdoors and helping them discover and hone the skills they will need to keep them safe as they pursue their own adventures in the mountains.

I have worked in the outdoors since 1985. I have had the privilege of instructing in numerous countries. I ran an outdoor company in Morocco for 20 years and then in France for 6 years. More recently I have been running an adventure therapy programme for displaced young people in the Kurdish Region of Iraq.I am now based in South Wales where I do freelance instructing and I continue to make regular journeys to Iraq and other countries to develop outdoor activities in these places.Having the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award has helped me to branch out into areas of work that more fully explore peoples potential. I love seeing people achieve far more than they thought possible and being an MCI gives me the professional background to discover and unlock hidden potential and talents.Developing the adventure therapy programme in Kurdistan has been a real challenge. I have drawn upon years of experience in different contexts - both in the outdoors and in the humanitarian sector. It is probably the most exciting thing I have been involved in.
Dan is a mountain leader rock climbing instructor climbing wall instructor and climbing wall development instructor provider. Dan started his career in the outdoor industry at Glenmore Lodge the National Mountain Centre for Scotland where under expert tutorage he learnt the hard skills of a mountaineer as well as the professional standards that should be expected at the highest level. After this, he worked as an outdoor instructor in the Lake District and North Wales for several years gaining his Mountaineering Instructors Certificate (MIC) and developing his soft skills working with young disenchanted children from a variety of difficult backgrounds. Whilst in Wales he worked for the Joint Service Adventurous Training Centres which included training the SAS mountain troop and the joint service instructors themselves. He now runs his own mountaineering company based in Yorkshire and is a technical advisor for Carnegie Great Outdoors at Leeds Met University. His company is the largest provider of the national governing body awards for mountaineering and climbing in the North of England and provides technical advice on these matters to many schools universities and local authorities in the area.

Im a keen climber and mountaineer. Ive been a qualified MCI since 2013 and I use the skills gained through this award on a daily basis in my work. The main reason I went down the MCI route was to give me variety in my work and also to be able to work with people as they progressed.
I began working in the outdoor industry in 2005 as a volunteer Instructor for Greenhill YMCA before going on to do a year as a trainee instructor in Tollymore National Outdoor Centre. After my time in Tollymore I went on to work as a freelance outdoor instructor working for a variety of providers throughout the UK and Ireland.During this time I worked my way through the mountain training awards eventually attaining the WMIC in 2014. This award allows me to work throughout the UK and Ireland in both summer and winter instructing all aspects of climbing and mountaineering.In 2014 I established Jonny Parr Climbing and now split my time between running summer climbing and mountaineering in Northern Ireland with occasional trips to Skye and winter climbing and mountaineering trips throughout the Scottish Highlands.
I began climbing whilst at school in Bristol. I distinctly remember my first day in the Avon Gorge because the Council blew up Teatime Ledge! A year later Id bought a pair of EBs a harness & a rope & was already �instructing younger pupils. The school took regular trips to Eryri so I was also introduced to the mountains early on. My third walk was across Crib Goch: I dont think Id ever been so frightened but somehow I kept calm & continued. Its hardly surprising therefore that I decided to study at Bangor University but I spent my summers instructing climbing & canoeing in the USA. Instructing led me into teaching & I was lucky because Avon LEA paid for me to do my NGB awards in climbing hill-walking & canoeing. Theyd be glad to know that their investment paid off as I continued to do this throughout 30 years of teaching whether it was preparing pupils for the infamous Ten Tors paddling the Avon & Wye abseiling down the Sea Walls or completing DoEA expeditions in Eryri & The Lake District. I pursued the MCI to take my son multi-pitch climbing safely & didnt foresee the doors it would subsequently open. When I looked for a way to escape teaching a new path presented itself as I was offered work training prospective MLs & RCIs. I really enjoy this work as I get to meet so many enthusiastic people who want to share their love of the mountains & after 40 years in the hills I have a wealth of experience to draw on to answer their questions. Being able to take folk to the more secluded areas of Eryri than they might be familiar with is also gratifying.Climbing & hill-walking teaching & instructing have been inextricably entwined in my life for over 40 years. They have taken me all over the world & made me many lifelong friends. I still bump into ex-pupils & their huge smiles tell me that my career choice was a good one for in many cases it has changed lives for the better forever. But then I knew that because its my story too.

I moved to North Wales in 1991 (when I was 21) and immediately discovered Mountains! Before this I lived in Leicester and worked in an office - so the location and the job limited my opportunities somewhat! I realised they were a great places to go for personal enjoyment and also to use to engage with the groups I was working with. My first job in North Wales was with young adults with learning difficulties (for MENCAP). I have worked in various social worker type roles since then for both public and private sector and have continued to use the outdoor environment to engage with people. I now travel all over the world regularly taking groups up Kilimanjaro and into the High Atlas mountains of Morocco as well as running and supporting various courses in beautiful Snowdonia.Working in such a wonderful place and being able to share my passion and respect for the mountains makes me feel really fortunate!

Since discovering rock climbing and hill walking with the Scouts I have never been far away from the mountains. I have been lucky enough to turn what was supposed to be a year out into a full time career and I now hold the Mountain Instructor Certificate. I first got into climbing at an early age when my Uncle took me on forays to Baggy Point and Portland. Then after a few other encounters with great people on fantastic routes got heavily into it. I have climbed and mountaineered all over the world ever since. I was fortunate that in 1987, I was offered a trainee post at an outdoor centre in North Wales called Cwm Pennant Centre. This was soon to be managed by the now Mountain Training Technical Officer and previous Association of Mountain Instructors Development Officer - Steve Long. Steve became my mentor until an ascent of a route called Vulture on the Lleyn Peninsula when he stated the apprenticeship was over if I successfully led the E4 5b pitch. He is now one of my closest friends. My journey through the Mountain Training Awards to WMCI has been fantastic and I met a fantastic friend and climbing partner, Phil Baker, on the way. I spent a few years climbing full-time in the mid 1990s and since then I have traveled around the world seeking adventures with some fantastic friends. This has taken me to Nepal Borneo North and South America including Alaska New Zealand Turkey Africa Patagonia and much of Europe. So that has got to be a very good reason to get climbing and if that is not enough I met my wife on one of these trips and we now have two fantastic children. For a number of years, I managed Apex Training Ascent Training and between 2011 and 2016 I was Chairman of the AMI. I now live in the Lake District and I'm Head of Outdoor Learning at Windermere School.
I first moved to North Wales in 2011 I was on a voluntary scheme at an outdoor education centre. I quickly fell in love with the mountains and the multiple environments that were so accessible. I finished my degree in adventure education in 2013 and moved back to north Wales that summer. I then completed a second traineeship at another centre in the heart of Snowdonia. I never left North Wales and became a freelance outdoor instructor. Ive been working in all sorts of places since then in a lot of activities including sea level traversing coasteering canyoning gorge scrambling canoeing kayaking mountaineering (summer and winter) climbing mining and educational trips such as sea shore studys and river studys.I joined llanberis mountain rescue team in October 2015.
