Find an instructor

How to use the 'find an instructor'

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

Ive been climbing since I was twelve years old. Its a passion and a way of life. Its also something I love to share whether thats with other experienced climbers or with people who are just starting out. Sharing the adventure is a huge part of it for me. I set up Rise & Summit as a mountain skills training and guiding company offering a wide range of courses with something to suit everyone from the complete novice to those looking to hone their technical mountaineering/climbing skills. We also offer TV & Film safety services from cast and crew safety to stunt doubles and rope rigging to get to awkward places and training whether this is in extreme mountainous environments cliffs or off the side of buildings. We offer technical advice to climbing centres whether this is staff training helping with risk assessments and operating procedures. As the author of the book Climbing Psychology I specialise in teaching people about the psychology of climbing and helping others with their headgame in climbing.

Climbing started for me when it became clear that the rugby pitch was not the place for a non-competetive mild-mannered and bespectacled eleven-year old. Fortunately a kindly teacher found space for me with another class on the climbing wall and Games was no longer a thing to be dreaded.I regularly skipped school taking the bus into Plymouth then immediately catching another one out to Dartmoor to return at the end of the day sneak past the teacher back onto the school bus and muddle my way through my classmates notes so I could convince my parents I had actually been in lessons. As the end of my school years drew ever closer a job involving climbing was all I could countenance. I had visited plenty of Universities (under the guise of checking out this course or that) and having contacted their climbing or mountaineering clubs previously spent many happy trips to most of the major climbing areas in the country. I thrive on the fact that I can pass on these skills and enable the adventures of others. I thoroughly enjoy working with clients of all ages and abilities from guiding someones first steps into the hills to training other instructors.

Ive loved the outdoors since I was a child enjoying walks with my parents along the coasts and over the moorlands of Devon and Cornwall. Once I left for University I discovered a love for climbing as well. This has taken me all over the UK and Europe. In 2010 I decided I could no longer face spending the rest of my life in an office despite enjoying the work and signed up to the Mountain Leader Award. This and my personal experiences with friends at work and at the university club enabled me to get onto the Centre Assistant Scheme at Plas Y Brenin where I worked through the other awards and skills required to become a full time instructor. I enjoy helping others safely discover the outdoors and wild places for themselves.

Hello! Im a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor based on the edge of the Peak District. As such my work is varied and massively rewarding! I spend a fair bit of time working on the local Grit and Limestone helping people become better and more independent climbers. For 20 years I have been leading walks and running navigation courses not taking for granted the inspiring landscapes I call my office. I value being able to finish a days work in the Peak District and return to my family but enjoy getting around the UK from my central base. If I had to pick what I enjoy doing the most each year it would be guiding steep ice throughout Norway in the winter and working on the Cuillin Ridge in the Spring and Summer. I work as a Mountain Training Course Director for the Hill and Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader Qualifications and have been involved in the training and support of climbing instructors for various organisations. As such I offer staff training and technical advice to various high ropes courses and climbing walls supporting better provision for a range of client groups. I have a wide angle lensed view of our industry and have worked in technical industrial fields as well as recreational. I am an IRATA L2 technician and bring together knowledge from a range of applications to run an Abseil Events company alongside my Mountaineering Instruction. Im often found on the top of buildings and man made structures meeting the vision of demanding clients. I have been a Committee member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors for a number of terms representing and supporting fellow Mountaineering Instructors in co-opted and elected roles. Im also a Cave Leader Paddlesport Coach and MTB leader. And I do enjoy a good road bike ride when I get a chance. But dont hold that against me...

Most of my life Ive been an engineer and product designer working to go climbing. I have done many alpine rock routes primarily in the Dolomites become involved with cascade ice climbing created an accommodation business in the Dolomites (Casa Alfredino) worked on climbing equipment designs (notably the WC Friend Edelrid Bulletproof HMS and a line of Skylotec equipment) and generally enjoyed being in the climbing mountaineering and skiing scene. Now I aim to pass on what Ive learned to the next generation helping people who have discovered climbing through bouldering walls get outside and fall in love with that too.

I have worked in outdoor education for over 20 years. I started life as a teacher in S Wales and preferred to be on the water boating then moved up to the lakes and into outdoor education and fell in love with the crags and fells! I started working on the mountain training scheme in the late 90s. I share the Head of Centre role at Ghyll Head Outdoor Centre on Windermere Cumbria. The centre has been open for 50 years and has an AALS license. I am a technical advisor for open canoeing and mountaineering.I have a real passion for mountaineering and ski touring in particular. Over the years I have travelled extensively to paddle climb and ski. These days I head to the Alps or Scotland for short bursts it fits better with family life! I hold the MIA and winter ML and a range of paddlesport qualifications I love working on the mountain training scheme and am happiest out on the fells :-)

I have always loved going to the hills. Growing up it was the Mournes. In my early 20s as a student in Edinburgh I became increasingly obsessed with climbing. It didnt occur to me for some time that I would pursue a career as an instructor - I did it for myself for the adventures the friends and the craic. At some point I took a notion to do Mountain Leader training. One thing led to another and in 2012 I found myself on the Instructor Development Scheme at Glenmore Lodge. Since then I have been working as a freelance MIA and WML all over the country. Integrating my lifestyle and my job has been as rewarding as I hoped it would be and Im still as passionate about it as ever.

I am a qualified Summer ML and SPA and a Geography/Science teacher. It has taken a lot of indecisiveness and time to get where I am but I am glad I pursued what is shaping up to be a fantastic career choice.I started exploring the Outdoors while at university where I joined the Mountaineering club which I eventually became the President of. After only a few climbing trips I was hooked. I didnt think there was a career in outdoor activities at that point and I had already decided I wanted to be a Teacher (like most Geography undergraduates). It wasnt until after university while working in retail that I started the process of becoming a freelancer by completing the SPA. I got a little bit of work using it but only at indoor climbing centres (can you see the irony?). I decided that the ML award was the most natural progression in to the outdoor office but living in the city wasnt conducive to obtaining it. So I moved to North Wales completed my teaching degree and booked my ML assessment passed first time and I was working with my own group the week after. This year Im leading my first overseas expedition to Jordan. It is a good profession but you have to work just as hard getting work as a freelancer as you do actually working. This is balanced by the fact I am my own boss and I decide when I work and most importantly when I do Im in the outdoors or rather Im out of the indoors!.

My first experiences of the outdoors were whilst growing up - camping and canoeing trips with the family and days out exploring the hills around Northern Snowdonia. This extended to trips as a Scout and the completion of my Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school.During my final years of education I participated in a Student Expedition to Madagascar. My eyes were opened to the possibility of a career within outdoor education. Inspired by my Expedition Leader I dropped out of University and dedicated myself to this new goal completing my Mountain Leader Training in 2011 before embarking on a few seasons with PGL to get started within the industry. My first placement at an outdoor education centre was at Blue Peris Mountain Centre between 2013-2014. Afterwards I chose to pursue a career within freelance instructing. Over the course of the subsequent 3 years I had come full-circle instructing for a reliable breadth of outdoor education centres and leading my first of many expeditions two of which were for the same company I had gone to Madagascar with. In 2018 I completed the Instructor Scheme at Plas Y Brenin further enhancing my skill-set and opening up many more opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to work across the UK and overseas ever since; For an innumerable amount of fantastic outdoor education centres and independent providers and through guiding on over 20 student/adult expeditions venturing to some of the Worlds highest peaks. I am forever thankful for having the ability to combine my passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for travel in the work that I do.I remain self-employed working in a freelance capacity for many organisations and privately with my own fantastic clients (www.alexanderkay.co.uk). Nowadays the hardest job is striking a balance between work play and completing a few more qualifications as the years go on...

A lifelong outdoor enthusiast based in the Calder Valley on the edge of the South Pennines I combine formal qualifications with extensive mountain experience across some of the worlds most challenging terrain. With a BA (Hons) in Outdoor Leadership Im equally at home navigating hills with map and compass or leading others through technical mountain environments. Over the last few years Ive delivered specialist training across the Joint Services environment including Winter Mountaineering Proficiency courses for JSMTC at Ballachulish Wing and serving as guest instructor on the annual JSMTC Alpine Concentration. My international experience spans ski touring climbing and mountaineering in Bulgaria Norway Iceland France Poland Tibet Germany (where I lived and worked happily for several years) Africa Jordan Canada Austria Nepal Spain and the USA. Recent highlights include leading summer mountaineering in the Mourne Mountains rock climbing instruction in the Lake District and delivering a 10-day Level 2 Nordic skiing and touring programme at the Joint Service Mountaineering Centre in Skeikampen Norway. Whether delivering formal qualifications or sharing mountain craft, I bring decades of experience and genuine passion for helping others discover the transformative power of the outdoors. I also repair boots and climbing shoes; when the weather is marginal/poor, which happens a lot in the South Pennines, have a look and do pop in for a brew to look at a map or local climbing guide if youre passing.

A book changed my life. I was brought up in the Southeast of England and enjoyed being outdoors but had no experience of the mountain environment. While I was at law college in Surrey I read Chris Bonningtons book Everest the Hard Way and inspired by the story and photos booked a climbing course in Langdale and have been hooked ever since. A few years later I moved to the Lake District and have been here ever since. At the time I was working as a Solicitor but eventually came to the conclusion that it was not to be my long term career. I met friends who worked in outdoor pursuits which seemed a great way to combine my love of the mountains with a career.. My wife and I took a year out to travel in India Nepal and Thailand and before spending the French Alps. We decided I should have a career change and I set about gaining the Summer Mountain Leader Award which involved a wonderful year collecting quality mountain days..This helped me get a job at the YMCA Centre at Lakeside as Deputy Head of Mountaineering. Mountain Training were adding to the awards available and I was one of the first Rock Climbing Instructors (then the Single Pitch Supervisors Award). I went on to gain the Winter Mountain Leader Award and the Mountaineering Instructors Award (now Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor). The awards allowed me to run climbing and hillwalking courses train staff and monitor safety at the Centre. I became a provider for Mountain Training to deliver the training and assessment courses for the Rock Climbing Instructor award and worked on Summer Mountain Leader Courses.I developed an interest in teams and leadership and moved into work involving team and leadership development which is now my main focus. However I still deliver Mountain Training courses on my own account and spend as much time as I can in the hills and climbing. It is interesting the impact a book can have!
