Find an instructor

How to use the 'find an instructor'

AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.

Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

From Moor to Mountain: A Yorkshire Lad in the Highlands. Earning my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor award alongside Winter Training and the Winter Mountain Leader qualification felt like a proper milestone. Not flashy, just solid. Like a well-packed rucksack or a brew after a long day on the hill. It’s the kind of recognition that says, “Aye, you’ve put the graft in, and you’ve done it right.”I didn’t set out chasing certificates. I set out to help folk feel steady on their feet, whether they’re picking their way through summer scree or navigating a whiteout in January. These awards have given me the tools to do that properly structured safe and with a bit of character. They’ve opened doors with providers, sure, but more than that, they’ve helped me build trust. Trust that when someone steps onto the hill with me, they’re not just getting a qualified instructor, they’re getting someone who cares. Since gaining them, I’ve tightened up my emergency protocols, refined session plans to suit all sorts from nervous beginners to confident returners and brought a bit of Highland hospitality and Yorkshire plain-speaking to every briefing. No fluff, no ego, just good, honest mountain days. I love having these awards, not for the badge but for what they let me offer: calm leadership, clear communication and a coaching style that’s rooted in care. When I mention them in a session or jot them down in a proposal, it’s not about showing off, it’s about saying “You’re in good hands. Let’s crack on and make this day count.”

I have always loved going to the hills. Growing up it was the Mournes. In my early 20s as a student in Edinburgh I became increasingly obsessed with climbing. It didnt occur to me for some time that I would pursue a career as an instructor - I did it for myself for the adventures the friends and the craic. At some point I took a notion to do Mountain Leader training. One thing led to another and in 2012 I found myself on the Instructor Development Scheme at Glenmore Lodge. Since then I have been working as a freelance MIA and WML all over the country. Integrating my lifestyle and my job has been as rewarding as I hoped it would be and Im still as passionate about it as ever.

Im a keen climber and mountaineer. Ive been a qualified MCI since 2013 and I use the skills gained through this award on a daily basis in my work. The main reason I went down the MCI route was to give me variety in my work and also to be able to work with people as they progressed.

Louis Kennedy

My name is Louis I am originally from Clapham in London and now reside in Fort William Scotland working as a full time Mountaineering Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader. I have been obsessed with climbing in its various forms for just over a decade but since moving to Scotland have focussed almost solely on traditional climbing and mountaineering: although since qualifying I have a rediscovered love for outdoor bouldering and sport climbing! I started my vocation somewhat accidentally; partly because the act of continuously pursuing climbing is an incredibly fun physical and cerebral challenge but as a result of the incredible people found within the community. I was definitely a bit of a misfit through school and I found a refuge with the sanctuary of the climbing wall. Admittedly I was incredibly fortunate to have many people of influence in my life help me to channel this passion into what it is today; from my first steps trad climbing aged 13 on Stanage in the Peak to my time in the Vauxwall youth development squad to my first Scottish winter climbing adventures. There have been so many wonderfully supportive people along the way to enable those gateway experiences and mould my impression of what a passion for climbing can achieve. Its now a large part of why I enjoy my job so much - getting the opportunity to introduce new people to the sport! I do a small amount of work for myself trading under the name Kennedy Mountaineering. I offer guided climbing adventures and skills courses (further details on my website) but feel I specialise in guiding classic mountain and sea-cliff routes on my Scottish Rock Tours (guided climbing/ bouldering/ sport/ trad/ scrambling) and providing introductory skills courses for new outdoor climbers. The majority of my work is on a freelance basis working with a variety of clients. From schools and youth development programmes to guiding people on their holiday mountain adventures.

Having been involved with Mountain Training awards since I was 19 as a Trainee they have always been held in high regard in my mind for the instructor and leader to be involved with. They have industry value and respect and content developed from experience.Ive put the work in over the years into gaining the experience that would allow me to confirm my abilities against the Single Pitch Award the Mountain Leadership Awards of both summer and winter and the Mountaineering Instructor Award and Certificates. All of these awards have given me the opportunity to work with amazing people showing them the beauty and adventure of the British Outdoors.Im now lucky enough to be able to help train the next generation and provide some of these awards to others so that they may begin or continue their careers in the Adventure Industry.

Cat Forster

I live in Llanberis North Wales working as a climbing and mountaineering instructor and teaching Outdoor Education. I am passionate about working in the outdoors and the exceptional opportunities it can provide for young people and adults.Originally from London I moved to Leeds in 1998 and worked as a youth worker; developing programmes for the personal development of young women using a range of outdoor activities team games and art-based work. A personal love of being in the hills and in wild open spaces led naturally to encouraging others to find such pleasure. I started to run courses on teaching Outdoor Education and gained qualifications in rock climbing (SPA) and the hillwalking (ML). I worked for Leeds City Council at their residential outdoor education centre Herd Farm running climbing high ropes mountain biking and archery activities. In 2007 I packed it all in to travel and work in New Zealand. On my return to the UK I moved to North Wales where I worked at the Mountain Training England office. I also gained the Mountaineering Instructor Award (MIA) which allowed me to become a full time freelance instructor. In 2019 myself and Pete Marshall set up Latitude 534 - With a combined 30years working in the outdoors we wanted to build a company that reflected not just the wealth of our experience but also the quality of the work we provide. Not just run of the mill activities but quality instruction; supportive and inclusive access to the outdoors. The rest of the time I have free to spend climbing and walking in the incredible mountains of Snowdonia. And hiding from the rain!

I have been climbing and mountaineering for over forty years and involved as an instructor off and on for thirty five of those years. I recently retired from "working" to return to this great pleasure of mine - taking folks into our mountains. Previously I have worked in a range of outdoor settings in Scotland and Northern England from management training centres skills training private guiding outdoor centres and teaching geography both in and outwith the classroom. Over the years I have climbed throughout Britain and Western Europe with occasional forays to North America Africa and a family trekking trip to Nepal when our three children were around 12yrs old. We had twins then a third 22 months later! That was a hard expedition! I am accredited by Mountain Training Scotland to provide Mountain Skills courses and a range of Rock Climbing courses following their syllabuses. Also offer bespoke courses/experiences to suit your needs experience and aspirations to give you the skills to get out and do it yourself. Happy to travel around Scotland and Northern England to suit where and what suits you best.

Ive loved the outdoors since I was a child enjoying walks with my parents along the coasts and over the moorlands of Devon and Cornwall. Once I left for University I discovered a love for climbing as well. This has taken me all over the UK and Europe. In 2010 I decided I could no longer face spending the rest of my life in an office despite enjoying the work and signed up to the Mountain Leader Award. This and my personal experiences with friends at work and at the university club enabled me to get onto the Centre Assistant Scheme at Plas Y Brenin where I worked through the other awards and skills required to become a full time instructor. I enjoy helping others safely discover the outdoors and wild places for themselves.

I have worked in outdoor education for over 20 years. I started life as a teacher in S Wales and preferred to be on the water boating then moved up to the lakes and into outdoor education and fell in love with the crags and fells! I started working on the mountain training scheme in the late 90s. I share the Head of Centre role at Ghyll Head Outdoor Centre on Windermere Cumbria. The centre has been open for 50 years and has an AALS license. I am a technical advisor for open canoeing and mountaineering.I have a real passion for mountaineering and ski touring in particular. Over the years I have travelled extensively to paddle climb and ski. These days I head to the Alps or Scotland for short bursts it fits better with family life! I hold the MIA and winter ML and a range of paddlesport qualifications I love working on the mountain training scheme and am happiest out on the fells :-)

I love the outdoors and mountains. I enjoy nothing more than encouraging others to enjoy the freedom and sense of achievement that a good day out in the hills and the great outdoors brings. Every day brings a different experience as the weather changes and people's expectations and abilities differ. I’ve met some great characters and made some good friends along the way. I am a professional Mountain Instructor and hold the Mountaineering Instructors Award (MIA) and a member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors. I am also a qualified Winter Mountain Leader and aspirant MIC Technical Advisor and have been working in the Outdoor industry for the last 25 years. I have trained and assessed on both Mountain Leader awards (ML) and SPA awards and teaching, instructing, coaching and guiding in the outdoors is brilliant...

I started climbing at the age of 9 when I went on a 6 week course at Huddersfield Climbing Wall. From then onwards climbing became my life and I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the UK with it. During my teens I went on several trips to the Alps and at 16 I climbed Kilimanjaro. In my 20s I moved to Cornwall and climbed on nearly every cliff down there ticking off some of the most classic climbs along the way. Im now based in the Lake District and work part time as a Senior Instructor for Outward Bound as well as running my own Mountaineering Instruction business.I started my journey towards becoming an instructor in 2009 when I went on my SPA training in the Lakes. I now hold the RCI Summer Mountain Leader Winter Mountain Leader and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualifications. Im also just embarking on my journey through the coaching qualifications as well as gaining experience towards WMCI and IML.

Although I began leading formal groups in the mountains when I was eighteen it wasn t until I was teaching in my mid twenties that I became aware of the Mountain Leader Award. My training course at Fellside Centre was great fun in spite of the usual wet and windy late October weather in 1984. With Cumbria C C funding it all there were about 20 of us on the course and it made me realise I was one of the more experienced and would have a good chance of doing well at assessment. The big challenge in my summer assessment was not so much performing the tasks in the perfect June weather as getting a smile out of Blythe Wright our assessor at Glenmore Lodge. In the end he did seem to relax during the expedition and started to share a few of his experiences like working on the Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood.I went on to do my Winter ML soon afterwards and was relieved that the gale force conditions of my training course were not prevalent when I did my assessment.I began rock climbing in the mid-1980s when I was a languages teacher in a school in South Lakes. After quickly moving on to leading I was hooked by the excitement of being at the sharp end of the rope on a mountain crag. I went to Plas y Brenin for my MIA training in 1995 and for my Assessment in 1997 which I thankfully passed first time. I began my career as an Outdoor Instructor at an LEA centre in the Lakes in 1987 and its a pleasure and privilege to be still doing so.

I have worked in the outdoors since 1985. I have had the privilege of instructing in numerous countries. I ran an outdoor company in Morocco for 20 years and then in France for 6 years. More recently I have been running an adventure therapy programme for displaced young people in the Kurdish Region of Iraq.I am now based in South Wales where I do freelance instructing and I continue to make regular journeys to Iraq and other countries to develop outdoor activities in these places.Having the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award has helped me to branch out into areas of work that more fully explore peoples potential. I love seeing people achieve far more than they thought possible and being an MCI gives me the professional background to discover and unlock hidden potential and talents.Developing the adventure therapy programme in Kurdistan has been a real challenge. I have drawn upon years of experience in different contexts - both in the outdoors and in the humanitarian sector. It is probably the most exciting thing I have been involved in.

UKC Logbook: https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/showlog.php?id=147497I have been having adventures in the outdoors since being able to walk. I was fortunate to have spent much of my childhood exploring the Lake District by ticking off Wainwrights, kayaking and mountain biking. Upon leaving college, I decided to pursue my passion for the outdoors by making it my job. Since then, I have worked in Scotland and Wales, working for various outdoor pursuits providers. After a year out in 2018 to travel and climb around the world, I now live back in the Lake District working for the Outward Bound Trust on Ullswater. Here I have the freedom to use my MCI to its full potential by leading young people on expeditions up scrambles and gorges and climbing. I work among an incredibly talented and passionate group of people. I spend as much time as I can helping others develop their own mountain skills. As well as having my own adventures, I love nothing more than guiding them through or introducing them to their own. I love teaching others others to climb my first lead was done with an MCI on a rope next to me this provided a long lasting desire to teach climbing I get a huge amount of enjoyment out supporting and challenging people to learn and push themselves. In 2021, I created Lake District Mountain Pursuits to provide bespoke guiding tuition and coaching in rock climbing, mountaineering and hillwalking (lakedistrictmountainpursuits.co.uk). As far as my own adventures go, I am a bit like a dog - just happy to be out! Whether it's a chilled day cragging or having an epic in the mountains, rain or shine, easy or climbing at my limit, I love being out in the mountains. When the crags are wet, I like to spend my time kayaking and canoeing. If the rivers aren't full, then time for some mountain biking! See you out there!
