ABOUT AMI
AMI is the representative Association for qualified Mountaineering Instructors. All of our Members are independent, and either run their own businesses or work for larger organisations. We list them here so you can find them easily and see what they have to offer.
Depending on the nature of the course or activity you should expect to pay upwards of £200 per day for the services of a Mountaineering Instructor. Remote areas, winter conditions, long routes and specialist experience are just some of the factors that may justify a higher daily rate.
Ratios vary greatly depending on the grade or nature of the terrain but an instructor/client ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 is typical for rock climbing, winter climbing and scrambling in mountainous environments. In some circumstances a higher ratio is possible, such as a larger group size at a lower and less remote venue. Maximum ratios for these days are determined by the instructor.
Select your instructor and contact them directly to make your enquiries.

I started working in the Outdoor sector in 2006 with little experience and through work and friends I quickly developed a passion for all things in the Outdoors.Working my way up through the SPA ML CWLA and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (formally MIA) Award schemes. I now actively use my Awards for an Activity Centre company providing Technical advice and Staff training and Development. I provide climbing and Naviagtion courses in Rossendale and West Yorkshire and also work as a freelance MCI instructor in the Peaks Dales Lakes Snowdonia and occasionally Scotland when I can.Its not all about work though I try to get out as often as possible personally and love getting out there pushing myself having adventures and just having fun in the outdoors.

I'm a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor based in the Lakes but working across all areas of the UK. I run Nomad Active Ltd and offer guided climbing or scrambling days and climbing or scrambling skills courses. Courses range from intro to climbing, learn to lead and up to progressing leading skills to the next level, each tailored to clients needs. I love days out playing in the hills and enjoy sharing those days with other people!

I'm Jen, a freelance mountaineering instructor and I work throughout the UK but mostly in North Wales on skills courses event safety rock climbing and mountain and adventure experiences. I also co-own Rock & Rowan a female-led mountain skills company focused on empowering people to find their independence and passion for the outdoors. I blooming love teaching skills and getting proper geeky with it and I firmly believe that the outdoors is for everyone. I am passionate about inclusivity making everyone feel welcome and empowered. I only discovered this whole outdoor world back in 2013 as an adult so Ive started at the beginning and I firmly believe that no question is a stupid one. I know how it feels to be a little daunted and overwhelmed by all the amazing options and I just want to open this world of mountains up to people like it was opened up to me. I also work with kids and school groups and find so much joy in teaching kids who might not have been exposed to wild spaces or adventurous activities what they are capable of in a safe way. I have loved the process of learning what Im capable of and now love to show people how to push themselves and achieve great things!

Based in Sheffield I run a small business called Alienmountain providing coaching and instruction over a wide range of mountain activities. I am also part of the inspectorate on behalf of the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) for the North of England ( https://adventurerms.org.uk/team/john-allen/ )The higher awards have opened the way for me to share skills with others to help them to improve. I like teaching people to lead on trad grit and steep ice the most and teaching navigation the least.

I love the outdoors and mountains. I enjoy nothing more than encouraging others to enjoy the freedom and sense of achievement that a good day out in the hills and the great outdoors brings. Every day brings a different experience as the weather changes and people's expectations and abilities differ. I’ve met some great characters and made some good friends along the way. I am a professional Mountain Instructor and hold the Mountaineering Instructors Award (MIA) and a member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors. I am also a qualified Winter Mountain Leader and aspirant MIC Technical Advisor and have been working in the Outdoor industry for the last 25 years. I have trained and assessed on both Mountain Leader awards (ML) and SPA awards and teaching, instructing, coaching and guiding in the outdoors is brilliant...

I moved to North Wales in 1991 (when I was 21) and immediately discovered Mountains! Before this I lived in Leicester and worked in an office - so the location and the job limited my opportunities somewhat! I realised they were a great places to go for personal enjoyment and also to use to engage with the groups I was working with. My first job in North Wales was with young adults with learning difficulties (for MENCAP). I have worked in various social worker type roles since then for both public and private sector and have continued to use the outdoor environment to engage with people. I now travel all over the world regularly taking groups up Kilimanjaro and into the High Atlas mountains of Morocco as well as running and supporting various courses in beautiful Snowdonia.Working in such a wonderful place and being able to share my passion and respect for the mountains makes me feel really fortunate!

the prayer of the axedear lord hold me tightaim me right and propel me strong so i may cut the rotten and the uglynever let me cut what will grow beautiful; o lord keep me sharp and ready; do not throw me in the shed or the tool boxwhen im old and crocked burn me in the flames so i can start again as a new and useful tool

Director of Outdoor Education at The Abbey School in Reading

For as long as i can remember i have always had a love for the outdoors. But it was on a school residential trip to mid-wales where we climbed Cadair Idris where my passion for climbing and the mountains began. After school I got an apprenticship at a climbing wall/activity centre in North Devon. Here i was invovlved with the delivery of the NICAS scheme up to level 5 and also took charge of a perfermance development youth group of which 3 members made the national finals of the BMC youth climbing series. After a few seasons here i completed a 3 year outdoor leadership and coaching course at the University of Derby with a 1st hons degree. I also completed my ML and RCI while here. Freelancing extensively across the peak district with these qualifications. After completing my degree i returned to the activity centre in Devon in the spring of 2018 taking over as the centre manager here until COVID. During my time in this position i oversaw the expansion of the centre to include a state of the art boulder wall. I took over as the NICAS director and applied and gained NIBAS level 4 accreditation for the centre. I implemented winter training and development progranmmes for all staff including the new apprentices and oversaw as well as carrying out much of the route setting at the wall. Since 2017 I have been involved in overseas expeditions. I have lead groups to South America Europe Africa and Asia. Climbing 2x of the seven summits and guiding multiple trips upto summits of 6500m in the Nepali Himalayas. Since COVID i have been working mostly in this capacity. I also passed my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor award in spring 2023 and have been working throughout the south west and North Wales wth this since. Me and my partner moved up to North wales in the autumn of 2023 and I am looking forward to exploring our new home that is Eryri and getting to work sharing my passion for climbing and teaching others the skills to go and have their own adventures.

Ive always enjoyed being in the outdoors walking and climbing was a way I could spend more time outside. Walking led to winter walking and mountaineering and rock climbing led to winter climbing and Alpinism. After taking my first flight to South Africa when I was 17 I also began to travel widely together with my interest in the outdoors travel ignited my interest in physical geography. I began to go on expeditions which led to me becoming an expedition leader as well as travelling to various mountain ranges around the world for high altitude mountaineering and ski touring. I continue to explore challenge myself in the mountains and on the crags and spend time experiencing different mountain cultures around the world.

Hi - thanks for reading my story1) An ascent of the North Face of the Tor Rond in the Mont Blanc Massive in a hired pair of crampons no helmet and no ice screws.2) A six week expedition to East Greenland - 3 out of 6 inflatable motor boats wrecked by pack ice and our only communication with the outside world (a military radio) fell into the fjord.3) A whole alpine season in the Ecrin region of the French Alps - solo on the Barre des Ecrin and leadership on the Traverses of the Pelvoux and the Meije 4) An Ascent of the Troll Wall in Norway graded ED - This is Europes biggest vertical rock face - THE VERTICAL MILE - This trip was dreamt up over too many beers one Christmas eve. Worth checking out on google if you the reader are unfamiliar with the face. THe North Face of the Eiger was climbed in 1938 - Trollweggen didnt get an ascent until 1964.5) The Comici and Brandler Hasse Routes on the Cima Grande in the Dolomites of northern Italy - Classic / Extreme North Face Routes ED6) The Cassin route on the Piz Badile in Switzerland - ClassicAlpine North Face 7) NW Pillar on the Cengaloo - Switzerland - A great alpine undertaking 8) Frendo Spur - Chamonix France 9) El Naranjo - The directissima - ED 10) An attempt on THE NOSE - Yosemite. 20+ years of experience working in the outdoor adventure industry working with individuals including various different types of groups in a range of settings from small outdoor centres to youth expeditions around the world. Have held several positions within different organisations as well as continued work as a freelance outdoor instructor across the UK. Very fortunate that I work throughout the year as a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor as well as a Winter Mountain Leader based in the Lake District but often found in North Wales, Scotland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire. My work is very varied between instruction mentoring and group work. In my free time, I try to spend as much time in the mountains as possible and especially love visiting new places and climbing some classic routes. I also instruct across other outdoor activities such as caving and mine trips, watersports and mountain biking.

I am an MCI trainee with the aspiration to become a WMCI in the furure.I have been hill walking since a very young age. My grandparents took me up Pen Y Fan when I was 6 years old and since then I have been hooked with the outdoors. Every year since then I have ventured to North Wales and the Lake District building upon my knowledge. Aged 13 I joined the Army Cadet Force as a young and keen teenager eager to develop my skills in a more demanding environment and improve my hill skills and navigation. Through the ACF I entered the Ten Tors challenge 5 times and found a love of rock climbing.Aged 16 I took up rock climbing as a hobby which soon developed into UK winter Ice and mixed climbing. When I turned 19 I did a Summer Mountain Leader Training course and 6 months later passed the Assessment. Since then I have continued to train Ten Tors teams for the ACF and lead groups in North Wales and the Lake District. I have always enjoyed passing on my knowledge to others and relish in the enjoyment others gain from learning new skills and experiencing the outdoors. It means a lot to me when I see individuals develop and improve their new found skills in an environment they may not usually find themselves in. This is the basis of why I set up my business At The Edge Mountaineering where I deliver navigation and climbing courses on Dartmoor as well as mountain skills courses in Snowdonia and the Lake District. My winter climbing has now led me to climb in the Alps both summer and winter and take up ski mountaineering and touring.

Work: The common thread in all the work that Im lucky enough to spend my time doing is the teaching of mountaineering skills to others and guiding people in all conditions all year round. I consider myself to be good at understanding what stage people are at in their exploration of the outdoors and am capable of working out effective ways to get them to where they want to be. I live in the Peak District where I run my company Adventure Expeditions which specialises in providing high quality private courses guiding Duke of Edinburgh Awards and outdoor activities. I also work training and assessing mountain leaders and climbing instructors and provide climbing courses and guided climbing walking and scrambling throughout the summer. In winter I spend my time running winter skills courses guided ice climbing navigation courses and generally enjoying being out in the Scottish mountains normally in the Cairngorms or Glen Coe areas. Play:What its all about! I got into the work through a love of the activities through making plenty of the good old fashioned mistakes and even inventing a few new ones... I love long distance walking running and all forms of climbing (apart from aid-climbing!). I strive to push myself to go that little bit further in all the strange activities we get up to in the mountains. Im always planning the next challenge - Next on the horizon is the Cassin Route on the Piz Badille in Switzerland but this will be the third time of heading out with this route in mind!... Third time lucky maybe? Then Winters on the horizon and Ive got my eye on Central Grooves in Stob Coire nan Lochan and White Magic in Sneachda amongst many other classics Im yet to do if psychological and climatic conditions are favourable! If you have a goal in mind and theres adventure involved I believe I have some good skills and plenty of enthusiasm to help you along the way.
